needs of SMEs in a globalized world, the ISSME is organising a world conference to assess how effective they are in terms of policies, support structures and initiatives to promote greater cooperation for optimum results. ISSME's World Conference on small and medium-sized enterprise development is a major International event. It is designed to attract Government Ministries & Departments, national & international organisations, SME support organisations, banks & financial institutions, etc. responsible for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The conference will discuss policies, strategies, support initiatives and institutional cooperation needed to strengthen the SME sector and prepare it for new challenges as well as opportunities.

Acknowledging that sharing of knowledge, experiences and best practices is the way forward, the conference will provide a global platform to policy makers, representatives of international organisations including the United Nations and key economic entities, members of the SME sector, trade and industry associations.

The theme, Fostering International Linkages for SMEs Development, is in keeping with this belief. The plenary sessions and suggested tracks for the parallel sessions/workshops shall endeavour to take this theme forward so that the conference can document the challenges as well as the opportunities the SME sector should familiarise itself with.

An exhibition which is part of the conference will provide practitioners from the SME sector a unique opportunity to showcase their products and services to a global audience.

The issues which the conference will address include Government Policies and Fiscal Incentives; Innovation and Technology Transfer; Networks to share information for growth strategies; Entrepreneurship Development, particularly when it comes to businesses owned by women; social marketing; Role of SMEs in Creating Employment; Human Resource Development; Role and Use of ICT; Micro-financing and Need for Business Incubation Centres.

It is perhaps apt that the Conference is being held in India, which many believe will be among the future leaders when it comes to driving global development. A large part of the credit for the Indian growth story over the past few decades goes to the creativity, innovation and resilience of the country's SME sector.

The Conference seeks to improve the competitive strength of SMEs by fostering sustainable linkages in a globalised surrounding.

It intends to do so by sharing information and experiences on best practices by governments, SME support institutions, international organisations including the UN and entrepreneurs from the sector.

The conference will also see participation from representatives of foreign governments based in India in addition to those from institutions involved in supporting the SME sector in an effort to make them sustainable and stay competitive in a fast-changing economic scenario.

Practitioners from the SME sector can expect to benefit from the insights provided by them in addition to useful inputs from members of trade and industry associations, representatives of banks and financial institutions and papers presented by researchers and analysts.

An exhibition which provides a unique opportunity to showcase products and services to entrepreneurs and practitioners from the SME sector will run parallel to the discussions.
