With the merger of the National Cosmetology Association with the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) and the move of the Gala to join the International Salon and Spa Expo (ISSE) in Long Beach, California, 2010 marks a new beginning for the NCA CARES Fund as PBA works to extend the important message of its charitable programs to beauty professionals across every sector of the industry.

On behalf of the entire PBA | NCA Board of Directors, thank you for joining us to celebrate the life work of 2010’s honorees – Legend Ann Mincey, Icons Sonya & Christopher Dove, and Icon Robert Cromeans – and for your support of the NCA CARES Fund’s amazing work through its three charitable programs:

Legends don’t come along everyday. As the two oldest and most prestigious professional associations dedicated to the beauty industry, PBA | NCA is proud to recognize those professionals whose vision, dedication and contributions have made a positive mark on the industry we hold so dear and its dedicated professionals. That’s exactly what the NCA International Legends & Icons Charity Gala is all about – recognizing leaders that inspire us all to do more.

The 2010 Gala continues the NCA tradition of raising funds to directly benefit industry professionals. Proceeds benefit the NCA CARES Fund, an umbrella organization benefiting Look Good… Feel Better, CUT IT OUT / Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund, and the NCA Disaster Relief Fund.

For 2010, NCA celebrates its merger with the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) to create a fourth membership section dedicated to the advancement of salon and spa professionals. The PBA | NCA member section joins PBA’s three existing member sections: manufacturers,

distributors and salon and spa owners. This historic opportunity will only help to advance NCA’s rich history of charitable giving by raising awareness of the NCA CARES Fund’s charitable programs within the professional community.

For the 4th Annual Legends and Icons Charity Gala and the first ceremony held alongside PBA’s International Salon and Spa Expo (ISSE), PBA | NCA is proud to honor Legend Ann Mincey of Redken 5th Avenue NYC, Icons Sonya & Christopher Dove, Wella Creative Directors, and Icon Robert Cromeans, John Paul Mitchell Systems Global Artistic Director for their unfaltering dedication to inspiring and educating their industry peers to strive for excellence in their careers and in the communities where they work and live.

It only takes a few minutes of speaking with Ann Mincey to recognize her compassionate nature. Starting her beauty career nearly four decades ago, Ann has fulfilled her desire to care for and encourage others by developing and delivering inspirational messages and helping to shape the careers of countless salon professionals, distributors and clients throughout the world.

Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Ann’s close relationship with her family and strong faith contributed to her desire to find a career helping those around her, eventually leading to a nursing degree from Southern Nazarene University in 1969. Returning to Dayton in the mid 70s to re-assess her career options, Ann took a job as a receptionist at “Designer’s Loft,” a 13-designer salon owned by a friend. It was there that Ann found her true calling.

“I walked into the salon and I really could see how women were coming in with the weight of the world on their shoulders and after spending just an hour or 40 minutes with their stylist – being touched and talked to, being made to feel and look beautiful,”

Ann reminisced. “I would see that at the receptionist desk everyday and I was just amazed at what I considered the magic being worked at that salon.”

Ann remained in her position as a receptionist for only a year before the local Redken distributor told her about a new position opening at Redken as a field representative to sell vitamins: Ann was hired right away because of her nursing background and her journey as an

industry educator began. “It was a long road. For two years I was out there beating the bushes, working with distributors and salons…But it just wasn’t enough to keep the line afloat.”

Even though the vitamin line was short-lived, Ann was determined to continue her career at Redken. Working with Redken founder

Paula Kent Meehan, Ann took her educational message a step further to develop inspirational messages for her salon audience. Ann’s new role was a first in the industry.

“Back in those days there were very few women out on the platform teaching… so for me to be a woman with a message that no one else was giving at the time was truly a pioneering step. I will forever be grateful to

Paula for having that foresight,” Ann said. She spent the next 30 years developing messages to encourage salon professionals to take care of themselves “not in a selfish way but in a self-centering way.”

Throughout her career, Ann has dedicated much of her time to charitable programs, including

Ann with Vidal Sassoon at the Intercoiffure Inspiration Award Ceremony in 2007

working with the American Beauty Association as the honorary chairperson of the 2002 Beauty Ball which donated more than half a million dollars to the American Heart Association. In 2004, the City of Hope bestowed its prestigious Spirit of Life Award to Ann for her instrumental role in raising $1.4 million for breast cancer research at the Beckman Research Institute in Duarte, California. She says that donating her time and energy is

just part of the nature of beauty professionals.

“We are a nurturing, care-giving, compassionate group; what stylists do every day is a charitable thing, helping, listening, offering, touching. But when a salon owner or stylist gives back to their community by doing a fund raiser... I see on their faces that they receive a huge deposit to their own emotional bank account. And when they are filled back up emotionally, they can go back to doing their creative work even better,” Ann said, adding that she encourages her salons by reminding them often that “we don’t give back because we have to – we give back because we get to.”

Ann has also been recognized for her contributions to the growth and success of the beauty industry several times, including being named into the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) Hall of Leaders in 2003 and NCA’s Hall of Renown in 2004. For her inspiration to women in business, Ann was presented the STAR award by the New York Women’s Agenda in 2002 and was a speaker during the Women’s Global Peace Initiative in Geneva, Switzerland, the same year.

Though Ann has many accomplishments to be proud of, she remains modest in her quest

to be an inspiration for salon professionals everywhere. “I never created a company, I never was a CEO, I never drove millions of dollars in sales – All I ever did was love that precious hairdresser that stands behind the chair everyday. I never forget that they are the reason I have been successful,” Ann said. “Being named in the Legends and Icons Gala, just to be considered a legend in this industry, is just unfathomable.”

Ann officially retired from Redken in 2009 but remains part of the Redken family as a Redken Spokesperson.

Long recognized as two of the industry’s leading hairdressers, the spark between Sonya and Christopher Dove was first ignited while they were attending cosmetology school in Devonshire, England. However, the spark for hairdressing was little more than a twinkle in both of their eyes. Chris wanted to be a clothing designer and Sonya was going into a career in nutrition. As the young couple contemplated their futures, the hairdressing spark would soon be ignited, turning into a fire that would skyrocket them to success.

“I had messed up my hair at home and had to spend a whole day at a hair salon waiting to be fit in between appointments. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the creativity,” Christopher remembered. “It was then that we seriously started looking at beauty as a career option. It wasn’t really planned.”

The two continued their education and found work in various salons. Beauty soon became an obsession and, in 1981, with the help of Christopher’s mother, the young couple opened their first salon, Sophisticuts, in Paignton, England.

“We had just come out of beauty school so it was a big learning curve,” Sonya explained. “We had never been [formally business] trained. We just sort of did it how we thought and learned through a lot of mistakes.”

The salon was eventually a success but the couple’s artistic hunger still wasn’t satisfied. They started competing locally, then nationally and eventually globally. The duo was quickly recognized by major manufacturers and they soon found themselves taking on the role of educators. Starting out teaching small classes in the mid 80s, the Doves were invited to participate in the Association of Hairdressing Teachers (AHT) show in London alongside major industry educators.

“There were thousands of students and teachers from all over the country…As much as we were excited, we were scared to death,” Christopher said. “People like Toni & Guy, the Vidal Sassoon team, and Trevor Sorbie were all going to be there…. We worked so hard to make sure we were good enough to be up there. We got a standing ovation.”

International success soon followed and the duo began working with Wella, traveling around Great Britain before coming to the U.S. It was during a show in Texas that the Doves met Linda and Shelton Ogle, owners of Shelton Ogle Salons and Schools in Dallas, Texas. Over the next six years, the Doves returned often to Texas to help train the Ogles’ salon teams and developed what would be a life-long friendship with the Ogles. In 1994, the Ogles invited the

Doves to join their team in Texas permanently.

“They are like family to us,” Sonya said fondly of the Ogles. Christopher added “If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t have come [to the U.S.].”

Since relocating to the U.S., the Doves have won several prestigious awards, including Haircolor USA’s Most Inspiring Hair Colorists in 2003 and Hair Colorists of the Year in 1999, 2000 and 2002. They were also named Master Hairstylists of the Year at the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) in

Christopher winning the British Hairdressing Award in the 80s

2001. They have continued to work with Wella, traveling around the country and meeting and working with major beauty players, such as Elizabeth Arden Salons in New York, where they worked as Creative Directors for several years. The Doves moved to Los Angeles in 2000 and opened their incredibly successful Santa Monica-based salon, “The Doves”, in 2007. The Doves say they feel they’ve come full circle.

“What we’ve been exposed to through our travels has helped us but we’re still new salon owners however you look at it,” said Christopher. “We’re taking the advice we give other people.”

Known for his charming wit and innovative business strategies, Robert Cromeans has achieved international acclaim few in the beauty industry can match. His path to fame started as unconventionally as his quirky style - through a chance meeting in a bar in his home town of Glasgow, Scotland.

“I saw these cool people dressed the same in a bar and asked someone who they were,” Robert said. “Turned out they all worked for Urban Rusk. That was the first time that I thought to myself ‘that

must be the coolest job in the whole world’.”

Robert has been hooked on beauty ever since. At 24, Robert moved to Memphis, Tennessee, and immediately enrolled in beauty school. He didn’t let his late start stop him from following his dream.

“Traditionally, a lot of kids in the UK start much younger. When I started school I was with kids 16, 17, 18 years old. Being 24, I had already had other jobs and knew that this was so much better than a real job. I saw right away that there were so

many possibilities and avenues. I was just super excited to be around it,” he said.

Robert’s career goals grew as he developed his skill. Starting from zero, he said, he didn’t expect much more in the beginning than a way to make a good living in a career that allowed him to express his individuality. But Robert discovered his flare for the platform early on through competitions while still in school and was inspired to learn more about educating by the international success of a fellow Scotsman – John Paul Mitchell.

Robert hit the ground running after

school, working in Memphis and quickly building a loyal clientele over the next year and a half. In the early 90s, Robert saw former Paul Mitchell Artistic Director Jeanne Braa on stage and decided to move to the West Coast to follow his dream of working in her four-chair San Diego salon.

“Without the promise of a job, I just packed up all my stuff, drove across country and showed up on her doorstep,” he remembered. “It wasn’t about the grandiose…It was a desire I had to be part of something bigger.”

Over the next few years, Robert’s acclaim as a platform artist and

educator along with his salon clientele grew rapidly, as did his business savvy and desire to be an innovator in the salon industry. With a small budget, he opened his first four-chair salon, “The Washhouse”, in the mid 90s with a band of talented young hairstylists and an untraditional focus on the art of shampooing hair.

“We were just trying to switch it up a little bit - trying to put the focus on what was most important to our clients instead of what may be traditionally more important to the hairdresser,” Robert explained. “This became a philosophy that we’ve built upon in recent years but that’s where it started.”

The seed of salon ownership was planted for Robert. He moved “The Washhouse” to a larger space and the enterprise officially became the first of five Robert Cromeans’ Salons in San Diego, Pacific Beach, Tulsa and Las Vegas.

Among his many accomplishments, Robert has been voted by the industry a record six times as behindthechair.com’s Stylist Choice Awards Platform Artist of the Year. He remains dedicated to educating future salon professionals and owns two Paul Mitchell Schools in California. His latest techniques and discoveries are featured on Paul Mitchell Collections and educational DVDs.

From his inspiring sessions with his own salon teams and international platform presentations to his DVDs, Robert always wraps his message of artistic innovation and entrepreneurship in a package of encouragement. Robert’s tireless dedication to the success of salon professionals makes him an industry icon to countless beauty professionals across the globe. “The journey is everything,” he said. “It’s an experience and I’ve had a diverse one.”

Robert Cromeans continues to educate around the world as the John Paul Mitchell Systems Global Artistic Director as well as splitting his time among his five salons and multiple DVD projects.

The NCA CARES Fund is an umbrella fundraising effort to benefit three important salon community outreach programs: CUT IT OUT / Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund, Look Good… Feel Better and the NCA Disaster Relief Fund. Each program was founded in part or entirely by NCA through the support of its members. The programs reflect salon professionals’ long-standing and deeply rooted commitment to supporting one another in times of need and to making a difference in the individuals’ lives through volunteerism, professionalism, and compassion.

2010 marks NCA’s 4th Annual International Legends & Icons Charity Gala in support of the NCA CARES Fund. PBA | NCA is enormously proud to host this Gala honoring industry Legend Ann Mincey, Redken 5th Avenue NYC, Icons Sonya & Christopher Dove, Wella Creative Directors, and Icon Robert Cromeans, John Paul Mitchell Systems Global Artistic Director. Event and ad sale proceeds for the 2010 Legends & Icons Gala and its Commemorative Journal will go directly into the NCA Cares Fund.

PBA | NCA invite you to learn more about these non-profit programs supported by PBA | NCA and salon and spa professionals nationwide and to become involved as a donor or volunteer.

One out of three women will be abused in her lifetime, and for some, the salon may be one of the few places they are allowed to go alone. Salon professionals have the unique role and trusted position in their clients’ lives, giving them a special opportunity to assist victims of domestic abuse.

CUT IT OUT / Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund is co-sponsored by PBA | NCA and Southern Living AT HOME to build awareness of domestic abuse through salons. The program trains salon professionals to recognize the warning signs and safely refer clients to local resources. More than 420,000 CUT IT OUT posters and 3.5 million safety cards have been distributed to salons free of charge. The posters and cards can be displayed in private areas, such as restrooms and changing rooms, and the safety card, which is printed in both English and Spanish, is small enough to be hidden inside a shoe.

Salon professionals can also follow the example set by past NCA member Anna Bloodworth, of Artfully Done in Durham, NC, and support victims of domestic

abuse through NCA’s Adopt-A-Shelter Program. Often when a woman flees a violent situation, she leaves with little more than the clothes on her back. Salon professionals can “adopt-a-shelter” and help by holding fundraisers or donating personal care items such as shampoo, lotion, and other necessities.

Established in 1955, the NCA Disaster Relief Fund provides emergency financial assistance to salons and salon professionals to rebuild their businesses and lives following natural disaster. Through the Fund, salon professionals can help one another in a time of need.

At no time in recent history has “need” been more evident than the days, weeks, months, and even years after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast. Through the NCA Disaster Relief Fund, salon professionals raised $1 million!

In the days after Hurricane Katrina, NCA member and Louisiana native Sam Brocato, president of Brocato America, took on the role of chairman of the NCA Disaster Relief Fund. He was a tireless fundraiser and first-hand witness to how the contributions from salon professionals helped individuals get back on their feet.

“One person came in to get a copy of her license and she didn’t have the cash to pay the fee,” says Sam. “We were able to qualify her and give her the money. She choked up and really couldn’t say a lot. About two hours later, she came back and said, ‘I can’t take this money.

I’ll never be able to pay it back.’” I told her, “‘You don’t have to. It’s been given by hairdressers for hairdressers.’”

More recently, NCA gave more than $26,700 to Hairdressers Unlocking Hope, a philanthropic enterprise founded by Vidal Sassoon and behindthechair.com founder Mary Rector-Gable, to help build 18 homes with Habitat for Humanity in the New Orleans area.

NCA made the significant donation, through the NCA Disaster Relief Fund, to the house sponsored by Professional Salon Concepts, a beauty distributor and education provider based in Illinois. “Our members care deeply about helping those in need and have given generously to the NCA Disaster Relief Fund throughout the years,” says Mark Goodman, PBA | NCA Council President.

Founded by the Personal Care Products Council in 1989, Look Good… Feel Better (LGFB) is a collaboration between the Personal Care Products Council, the American Cancer Society, and PBA | NCA. During the last 20 years, LGFB has helped more than 650,000 cancer patients cope with the appearance changes of cancer treatment thanks to thousands of volunteer cosmetologists, estheticians, makeup artists and nail technicians. LGFB volunteer salon and beauty professionals help cancer patients by offering practical tips about skin care, makeup techniques, and guidance for coping with hair loss in complimentary, non-medical, brand-neutral workshops. Today, information is available online, through self-help materials, and through one-on-one consultations. In addition, there is a LGFB program for teens (2bme.org), info for men in print & online (lookgoodfeelbetterformen.org) and a Spanish language program (Luzca Bien… Sientase Mejor).

Like most LGFB volunteers, NCA-LGFB National Project Director Linda Whitehurst says the reward comes from helping others. “It is inspiring to volunteer

for such a worthy cause and to help women feel more hope and confidence during treatment. As beauty professionals, LGFB is our opportunity to use our knowledge and skills to give back to our community and women who have contributed to our success. The kindness and encouragement offered by volunteers helps participants feel the power of a community of women who understand what they are going through and that is very special.”

Be the change! The NCA Dining For Change program is a fun, easy way to bring fellow professionals together in small groups across the country to network, share, enjoy one another’s company - and raise a bit of money for a good cause.

“NCA’s Dining for Change is a grassroots fundraising initiative based on a new and growing model of localized charitable work called ‘giving circles’—groups of individuals networked with other small groups to make a difference,” explains PBA | NCA Council President Mark Goodman. “Our members told us they wanted more opportunities to connect locally and NCA’s Dining for Change created that venue on their terms. We are so delighted that so many industry professionals accepted our dinner invitation. I am so proud of our NCA members, who by joining together on a local basis, raised more than $100,000 for our community service programs in 2009. That’s the power of camaraderie!”

In March 2010, NCA invites you to: • Host a get together with your fellow professionals, co-workers, business associates and/or clients • Encourage others to host their own get-togethers as part of a national network of professionals • Promote your support of Dining For Change and the industry related charities it benefits

We suggest each guest donate $5 to $25 to the NCA CARES Fund, an umbrella fundraising effort to benefit three important salon community outreach programs: CUT IT OUT / Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund, Look Good… Feel Better and the PBA | NCA Disaster Relief Fund – all supported by the PBA | NCA membership.

“Last night we had our first Dining For Change Open House. With the help of my wonderful staff, our clients, sales reps and fellow NCA members, we had a ton of fun and raised money for the NCA CARES Fund! I think the evening was a success and we had a great time!” - Toneia, North Carolina

The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) | National Cosmetology Association (NCA) is proud to announce that as of January 1, 2010, the two associations have officially merged to create one unified trade association and the strongest supporter for the advancement of the professional beauty industry. As a result of the merger, NCA members join PBA as its fourth membership section designated to the personal and professional development of licensed individuals.

“This merger is historic for our industry,” said Bruce Selan, Chair of the PBA Board of Directors. “It represents a progressive step toward industry unification and furthers PBA’s goal to be recognized in the industry as the catalyst for driving consumer loyalty, member success and the advancement of the professional salon industry. Joining the collective strengths of PBA and NCA will help the association support members competing in an increasingly complex business environment.”

All PBA members – licensed professionals, salon and spa owners, manufacturers, and distributors – will continue to enjoy the benefits they have come to rely on and can look forward to several new opportunities throughout 2010 and beyond.

NCA section members now have access to even more benefit providers through the PBA network, access to PBA Business Blueprints specially designed for licensed professionals, special member pricing to PBA educational and networking events, including PBA Symposium and the International Salon and Spa Expo (ISSE), the most up-to-date industry research, legislative advocacy and much more.

PBA will absorb NCA’s rich history of charitable giving with the NCA CARES Fund, allowing members from PBA’s manufacturer, distributor and salon/spa sections more opportunities to participate in charitable programs. NCA members welcome the input from professionals from other PBA sections and the opportunity to expand on PBA | NCA’s charitable efforts.

“I am so excited about NCA merging with PBA for many reasons, the exposure to the other associations, the educational opportunities along with the opportunity to recruit more volunteers from [PBA’s salon/spa section] for Look Good Feel Better, CUT IT OUT and the Disaster Relief Fund,” said PBA | NCA member Linda Whitehurst of The Parasol Hair Studio in Charlotte, N.C. “The time is good for a change!”

NCA members can remain confident in the leadership governing their member section in PBA. Each PBA member section is represented by a nine-member leadership council: Three members from each council are elected to sit on the PBA Board of Directors, which handles budgeting, legislation endorsement, strategic planning and other industry-wide issues. As a result of the merger, the entire NCA Board of Directors

will transition to a PBA Leadership Council representing the NCA member section and the PBA Board of Directors will expand to a 12-member board representing all four membership sections. Board members and each leadership council will continue to work together while seeking the input of members to develop valuable programs and initiatives important to the career advancement of professionals from that section.

“To have both sides of the industry consolidated will bring solidarity of purpose and a sharing of common goals,” expressed PBA | NCA member Linda Chard, owner of Linda’s Place Salon in Sandy, Utah. “This [merger] will enhance the effectiveness of both sides of the industry in the pursuit of excellence in all areas pertaining to the beauty industry. The unification of two such huge forces can only benefit the industry as a whole.”

You two are the most “colorful” team our industry has ever had and we owe you so much as educators. You shine bright on stage with both humor and grace. Through thick and thin, you’ve given our industry the most amazing education and often sacrificed your own lives to put hairdressers first. For this, our indus-try thanks you! Note to Chris: you can never put too many crystals or bling in the hair!!

Dear Robert-You are more deserving of this award than anyone I know. It’s about time our industry honored the magic you make in the hearts of hairdressers! Seven times you’ve won BTC’s Stylist Choice Platform Artist of the Year! You connect to hairdressers on a level that nobody else ever has or ever will. Please don’t ever leave the stage. You belong there. Congratulations!

This industry owes you so much; I owe you so much. You’ve taught us about living life with purpose and about following our dreams, even with sacrifice. You’ve proven that goodness does prevail and that even in tough times, when one door closes, another, better door always opens in its place. I believe you now, I really do. Thank you for the depth of our conversations! Congratulations!
