Port Blair Airport Gets a Modern Look

Waiting area inside the airport Entrance to the AirportPort Blair is the capital of Andaman &Nicobar Islands, a Union Territory of India. The look and feel of Port Blair Airport haschanged drastically after the recentbeautification project executed by JindalArchitecture Ltd (Arc). The old traditionallook of the place still exists but in amodern perspective with the modernmaterial stainless steel being used asthe medium. The work done by Arc hasnot only given a face lift to the entire place, but also strengthened the infrastructureof the columns and passage-way andcreated convenience for airport staff andtravelers. The place is adorned withbeautiful stainless steel railings and

column claddings in simple but moderndesigns. The interesting fact is that allthis work had to be done withoutdisrupting the existing set up likecladding the three side facing columnwhere the groove had to be designed andfabricated to suit the layout of thecolumn.

Port Blair is one of the latest airportprojects done by Jindal Arc wherein ateam of specialists, technicalsupervisors, design engineers etc werestationed for more than three months inPort Blair to ensure smooth executionof the project.

Apart from this, Arc has alsosuccessfully executed beautification andre-structuring works at almost all themajor airports in India including Delhi,Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore,Amritsar, Trivandrum, Jaipur and will besoon starting work in Chennai,Chandigarh, Varanasi, Dehradun andIndore airports, to name a few. Total areaof stainless steel cladding of columns –500 square meters; total length of railing– 600 running meters.

Energy-efficient Stainless Steel Cookware

Stainless steel is the preferredcookware material in Indian householdsand accounts for about 70% of totalstainless steel usage in the country.Commercial kitchens in hotels, restaurants and fast-food outlets alsouse stainless steel extensively forcooking. Indian stainless steelcookware is exported to almost allcountries of the world.

Indian households fully appreciate theneed for stainless steel in order that thefood they cook remains hygienic withoutcontamination from the cookwarematerial (all the grades used in Indiahave been extensively tested forcorrosion resistance in all food mediaand found not to impart any metallicelement into the food being cooked), itis easily cleaned no matter how muchyou burn the food, and durable fordecades in tip-top condition withpleasing appearance.

Stainless steel cookware in India andthe world has seen quite a number ofnew design changes. Some werecosmetic changes to give new surfacefinishes to the cookware and tablewareinstead of the usual buffed finish. Manyother design changes concentrated onimproving thermal efficiency whilecooking in order to reduce fuelconsumption and cooking time.

Amongst the latter we can recall copperelectroplated in the bottom; then camesandwich-bottoms with aluminium, again at the base of the cookware. Butat all times, the food contact surfacewas always stainless steel. Aluminiumand copper have much better heatabsorption and transmission propertiescompared to 200 and 300 seriesstainless steels but they are no matchfor stainless steel when it comes tobeing in contact with food being cookedand delivering wholesome food.

A new design combining the bestproperties of stainless steel andthermally better performing copper/aluminium is now available elsewherein the world and the techniques ofmanufacturing these can be madeavailable by ISSDA to those who areinterested.

Cooking with LPG or electricalheating elementWhether it is LPG cooking or cookingover an electrical heating element, theheat is not supplied uniformly to thebottom of the cookware. The image hereshows uneven distribution of heat at thebottom

2-Ply TechnologyThe use of copper or aluminium in thebottom helps even out the heat input. This is what we use in copper cladbottom or aluminium sandwich-bottomin our cookware these days. Thismethod does not cover the sides of thecookware which leads to significant lossof the applied heat energy.

The new technology is to roll aluminiumor copper sheets with stainless steelsheets and then cut circles out of themand form the cookware. The cookwarehas thermally better performingaluminium or copper on the outside andstainless steel on the inside. Thisensures more effective and uniformdistribution of heat in the entirecookware from the bottom to the top. This saves energy and time byefficiently transferring the maximumamount of heat available from the LPGor electrical or kerosene stove.

Induction Cooking with 3-PlytechnologyWe are now comfortable with theconcept that electricity can beconverted into microwaves which cancook or heat our food directly withoutlosing energy to heat the surroundingsor even the ceramic or glass container.Similarly, Induction heating is a new wayof converting electricity to heat. Ininduction heating, eddy currents arecreated in the ferromagnetic utensil anddirectly creating heat in the cookwarewithout any loss to the surroundings. This is highly energy efficient heattransfer. In flame or electrical elementheating, there is plenty of room for agood amount of the heat escaping intothe surroundings.

In induction heating the cookware needsto be magnetic (i.e. be attracted bymagnet). The 200 and 300 seriesstainless steels are not magnetic.

The white spots show the hottest regionswhere LPG flames directly hit the bottomof the stainless steel utensil; Red areashows moderate heat and blue areas arequite cold in comparison

Hence, an outermost layer of FerriticGrade stainless steel 430, which is fullymagnetic, is used.

Like the earlier concept of 2-Plytechnology, now we roll together threedifferent materials; (1) An outer 430 gradestainless steel sheet for getting heated;(2) a middle layer of copper or aluminiumsheet for thermally efficient transfer ofheat to the innermost layer; (3) finally the200 or 300 series stainless steel sheetfor the inner food-contact area.

The three layers are rolled together, heated treated for improvement ofproperties then circles are cut andcookware made.

In experiments done over a period of timein residential environment, it has beenfound that cooking in 2 and 3-plycookware over LPG gas stove take onlyabout half the time taken for cookingsimilar quantities of rice or vegetablesusing an aluminium or sandwich bottomcookware. This is a great saving in fuelcost and TIME.

If you use a 3-ply even if you do not havean induction cook-top, the benefit is thatyou also have a stainless steel exteriorwhich will be easy to clean and will lookgood for long periods of time.

Many induction-cooking units areavailable in the market for a reasonableprice. If this is used, provided you havegood electricity supply, then you cansave even more energy.

Editorial ENHANCE FABRICATION CAPABILITIES THROUGH ISSDAISSDA was formed by the Indianstainless steel industry in 1989 tointroduce and promote extensive use ofstainless steel in industry sectors thatwere hitherto not using stainless steel.

When ISSDA was founded, the onlyknown application of stainless steel, asfar as the common man and even manyengineers and architects wereconcerned, was kitchenware. There wasno readymade roadmap for the creationof new markets for stainless steel inIndia. All we could display was theachievements in the West or in Japan. No one ever believed that India, whichwas very backward in the late 1980s andearly 1990s, could even dream of suchthings.

Fortunately for us, Salem Steel Plant(SAIL) had wide cold-rolled sheets inproduction and in all earnestness theyinitiated and pursued the objective ofintroduction of stainless steel inArchitecture and in the Railways. Thiscame in extremely handy to pursue andbroaden the good work SSP initiated byinvolving the entire industry.

We realized early on that the only wayto change the situation was to changethe mindset of those responsible formaterials selection. Over the last 20years, several hundred workshops, conferences, meetings, exhibitions andtraining programmes were held variousparts of the country to create awarenessabout the benefits of using stainless steelamongst architects, engineers anddesigners. In-house or publicconferences were held for the Army,

Navy, airports, railway, CPWD, PWD andlocal municipality personnel across thecountry. Tonnes of free technical literatureon stainless steel and its applicationsfrom the Nickel Institute were mailedacross India. The quarterly magazine‘STAINLESS INDIA’ which is beingpublished since 1995 on a quarterly basisis sent free of charge to over 7,000persons across India. Alongside, thehandful of stainless steel fabricators wereencouraged, provided technical support, and helped in getting prestigious projects.

We feel that ISSDA’s biggestaccomplishment is the CHANGE OFMINDSET ABOUT STAINLESS STEELIN INDIA. Once this is accomplished, therest, as they say, is history. Thisawareness creation goes on.

Stainless steel production in India in 1989was barely 2 lac tonnes. In this year, thetransportation sector alone would beusing 2 lac tonnes out of a totalindigenous production of over 2 milliontonnes.

Now we have some good fabrication unitsto cater to both the architectural sectorand also to the railways. But the numberswe have is very insignificant comparedto the size and the potential requirementof the country. Newspapers herald thatMercedes and BMW are moving to theClass II and Class III cities. If thestainless steel market is to grow, that isthe direction in which we have also togo.

But the limiting factor is the existence ofa significant number of good qualityfabricators to cater to these demands.

Once you start supplying the non-metromarkets, there is no limit.

Looking at the mass enthusiasm andeagerness of visitors and exhibitors atINDINOX 2010, we feel that this wouldbe an appropriate time to reiterate andmake known to a larger audience thatISSDA’s technical support andassistance in establishing qualityfabrication facilities IS ALWAYSAVAILABLE FOR THOSE WHO NEED.ISSDA would be happy to providetechnical lecture and hands-ontraining in quality fabrication togroups of entrepreneurs anywhere inIndia.
