B lessed is the One who has exempted me for punishment for this one. Midrash Rabbah tells us that parents are re-

sponsible for the transgressions of their children until their child reaches the age of bar/bat mitzvah. Then the young adult is fully responsible for the con-sequences of their own actions. In recognition of this hand off of liability, the parent recites the blessing above. This is a remarkable way of helping families to see their child in a new light, to see them as adults instead of kids.

My family and I have been blessed to be able to raise our children as part of the Temple Israel family. It makes our daughter Hannah's bat mitzvah this month even more moving. So many people have already been a part of pre-paring her for this day and helping her to begin celebrating that it has swollen our joy to overflowing. We know that we will be surrounded by our Temple Israel family as she reaches this milestone and that will make all the difference to her in the years ahead. Would that every young person receive such sup-port and affection from a community.

We can't be there for every Jewish child in the world, but we can for all the others in our community. Temple Israel is truly blessed to have many wonder-ful children in our school and congregation. We have a manageable number of simchahs each year which means we can all attend all of them. Every young person in the community should stand on the bimah with a full sanctu-ary of family, friends and strangers knowing what it means to be part of the Jewish people. Some of them are family, many are friends but even the strangers care for one another.

After having invited you all to be part of my family's celebration, let me invite you to all our future simchahs as well. They are all listed on our calendar and in the bulletin. You don't need to RSVP; just come and make everyone in our TI family feel as much a part of this Torah community as possible. This is the greatest gift you can give and it will last a lifetime.

From Our President

D ear Temple Israel Family,

I hope that this article finds you all well. It's May now and time is ticking away; before we know it, 2016 will be almost half-way completed. So here’s what's happening, in case you were wondering:

As you would expect, lots of things continue to happen at Temple Israel. The Neely family joined the Shares and Klugers at Indoor Skydiving. We all had a blast and I must say it's pretty cool to see your Rabbi floating up in the air. Never wonder again: we are a Cool Shul.

Second Night Community Seder is in the books, as they say. Kudos go out to our Ways & Means Committee, with Roz Weinstein and Emely Katz as the Chairs. And great appreciation goes out to Lauren Brown for bringing our TI volunteers out in full force. It was a beautifully led service by Rabbi, and food was delicious and plentiful. I trust the over-one hundred guests enjoyed as our family did.

The renovation of the Ladies Bathroom next to the Rein Sanctuary is wrapping up, through the generosity of the Roth family. Once that project is completed expect TI to move forward with the foyer renovation, which is a continued effort at renewing our home, making it even more inviting to all.

May 15, I ask that members in good standing join us in the Roth Social Hall for a very important meeting to amend one of our bylaws involving our Meitin Religious School. Notifications have gone out already, but please come to the May 15 meeting.

Before you come to the meeting, however, join us as we celebrate Hannah Neely's Bat Mitzvah the weekend of May 6. She has been on the Bima for some time now, and it should be wonderful see-ing her lead services.

Finally, before the end of May, I will be heading off to Baltimore to SULAM for Presidents, a learn-ing opportunity provided through USCJ. Due to the generosity of Rabbi and Sisterhood, I am able to learn how to be President of a Conservative Synagogue in today's modern day environment. I hope to bring back many new ideas, many initiatives we can explore, and I am honored to have this chance to enhance TI even more.

From Our Congregational Life Coordinator By Susan Bernstein

S havuot, which will be celebrated on June 12 and 13 this year, is

the second of the Shelosh Regalim, three major festivals with

both historical and agricultural significance. It commemorates the time when the first

fruits and wheat were harvested and brought to the Temple, and is also known as Hag

HaBikkurim (the festival of the first fruits). Historically, it celebrates the giving of the

Torah at Mount Sinai and is also referred to as Z’man Matan Torateinu, (the time of

the giving of our Torah).

It is customary to eat dairy meals on the first day of Shavuot. Many reasons have been

given for this custom. From the Book of Shir HaShirim (Song of Songs) we read,

“honey and milk shall be under your tongue” implying that the words of Torah are as

pleasant to us as milk and honey.

Some believe that this custom is connected to restraint and self-control. Meat was be-

lieved to be the food of choice for those who knew no restraint. People who seek self-

control usually limit themselves to dairy foods. Eating dairy meals on Shavuot reminds

us that Torah is given to those who desire a serious and thoughtful life rather than one

of mere pleasure.

Whatever interpretation meets your approval, the idea of eating lighter meals and dis-

covering new cheesecake recipes appeals to me the most.

Latino ShabbatLatino ShabbatLatino Shabbat Join us for another Latino Shabbat on Saturday, May 14 at 9:00 am in the Savage Family

Chapel. The service will be conducted in Spanish and Hebrew using a siddur in both

languages. It will begin with Birchot Hashachar and P'sukei D'Zimra, and continue with

Shacharit; It will include a D'var Torah in Spanish. After the discussion on the Parasha

of the week, participants will join the congregation in the main sanctuary for the ser-

vice of reading the Torah and Musaf. After the service, a kiddush with Latin flavor will

be served in the Roth Social Hall. The service is open to the entire Jewish community

of Orlando.

Únase a nosotros en otro Shabat Latino el Sábado 14 de Mayo las 9:00 am en la Capilla de la Fa-

milia Salvaje. El servicio se llevará a cabo en Español y Hebreo usando un sidur en ambos idiomas.

You’re invited to a Lag B’Omer celebration on Sunday, May 15 10:00 am-

12:00 pm; please arrive at 9:00 am as you would any Sunday school day. Ac-

tivities to include archery, pita making, olive oil making, zatar making,

strength and agility games, and an art project.

Last Day of School & Lag B’Omer Games!

Tot Shabbat is a joyful and engaging program geared toward families with young children, ages 5 and under (older sib-

lings are welcome too). This 30-minute program includes Shabbat themed songs, dancing, stories, a Torah parade, sim-

ple blessings, and Challah and juice too! Tot Shabbat meets at 11:15 am in a bright and cheerful kid-friendly section of

our Kindergarten classroom 1. Led by Nina Fine.

Bring your friends and meet other families with small children as we celebrate Shabbat with the youngest members of

our community! All are welcome, and temple membership is not required. Afterward, stay and join our entire congrega-

tion for our Shabbat Kiddush Luncheon.

Murray Toborowsky is an experienced history teacher whose passion

is researching and lecturing on the impact of Jews on American History.

He has taught a four-part course on the subject at Temple Israel, CRJ

and at his home synagogue in Louisville, KY and has recently lectured

on “Jews in American History” at Rollins College. On Sunday, May 15,

2016 Mr. Toborowsky returns to Temple Israel to present the first lec-

ture in his new series: Abraham Lincoln & The Jews. He will discuss

the relationships among Abraham Lincoln and his Jewish friends and

acquaintances and how these connections may have influenced the di-

rection of American history.

Mr. Toborowsky will cover such topics as:

(1) How Lincoln became so friendly with the Jewish community,

(2) How and where he met these immigrant Jews, and

(3) The influence of his vast knowledge of the Hebrew Bible on his life.

On Friday evenings after services we traditionally enhance our Shabbat joy known as Oneg Shabbat. On Friday, May 20 we will have a special Oneg Shabbat with Israeli Dancing.

You will have the opportunity to learn new dances as well as dance to old favorites. That evening there is also a Simcha Shabbat! It’s a fun night of celebration and dancing. Come join the fun!

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the Meitin Religious School Graduation on Saturday,

May 21 at 9:30 am. Our graduates this year are Miriam Crane, Hannah Neely, Alekzander

Jenkins, & Noah Dukes. In addition, we will be honoring our outstanding teachers: Nina

Fine, Rachel Fogel, Eliana Gershon, Fanny Sernik, & Chuck Silverman. All Hebrew school

I Am The Face of Temple Israel My family

My wife Debbie Amdur of 26 years; my step son Seth and his

wife Katrina who live in Morristown New Jersey and are ex-

pecting our first grandchild. Also my step daughter Alicia and

her husband Greg. They live in Brooklyn Heights.

Things I do in life

I am a psychologist by training; I have worked for United

Health Care for eight years.

Things I love to do in my spare time

Attending Shabbat services and the Rabbi’s lunch and learn.

Continuing to master reading Torah.

I also enjoy being with my wife, spending time with my fam-

ily, travel, reading both fiction (Daniel Silva, Carl Hiaasen,

Ken Follett, David Liss, Herman Wouk, Chaim Potak etc.)

and non-fiction (mainly history, biographies and Jewish

themed books), working out, running, reading the NY Times

and Wall Street Journal. Also going out to eat and socializing

with good friends.

My favorite sayings

humility

Prayer Book/Torah Commentary Dedications

The dedication of a prayer book (siddur) or Torah Commentary (chumash) is a uniquely appropriate way to make a gift of

tzedakah that benefits the congregation for years to come. Your dedicated siddur or chumash will be utilized by the entire

congregation. A book plate with your specific dedication will be placed in the book prior to its addition into the congre-

gation circulation and an acknowledgement card will be sent. The appropriate minimum contribution for each sacred

book is as follows:

Temple Israel’s Keepers of the Flame Not surprisingly, our membership dues do not cover Temple Israel’s expenses, and without generous dona-

tions we would be unable to fulfill our mission of building a sacred community. Thus our basic dues represent

a member’s minimum financial commitment. Recognizing that there are many members who have the ability

and the desire to provide greater support in addition to their basic dues, Temple Israel created a membership

category called Keepers of the Flame to provide a mechanism for this increased level of giving. The generosity

of our current and future Keepers is vital to the sustainability and growth of Temple Israel.

In appreciation of this increased-dues level of commitment, Keepers of the Flame are welcome at all Temple

Israel sponsored Shabbat dinners, synagogue Seders and program events without additional charge. Only a res-

ervation is required. Additionally, there is a designated “Keepers of the Flame” seating area at all of the High

Holiday services.

The following giving levels are suggested:

Benefactors $15,000 and up

Pillars $10,000 to $14,999

Defenders $7,800 to $9,999

Guardians $5,300 to $7,799

Protectors $3,300 to $5,299

Preservers $2,400 to $3,299

Kindlers $2,000 to $2,399
