Day 1: Depart U.S. for Tel Aviv

Day 2: Arrive Tel Aviv We arrive this after-noon in Tel Aviv then transfer to our hotel inthe heart of the city. Tonight’s welcome dinneris at the hotel. D

Day 3: Tel Aviv Today we encounter thevibrant modern city of Tel Aviv, Israel’s arts andculture capital. Our tour features IndependenceHall, where the state of Israel was declared in1948; the recently renovated neighborhood ofNeve Tzedek; and the “White City” district ofdistinctive Bauhaus architecture, a UNESCOWorld Heritage site. We end the day in nearbyJaffa, visiting the ancient port, flea market, andArtists’ Quarter of galleries and shops. B

Day 4: Tel Aviv/Upper Galilee We travelnorth along the coast to Caesarea to see theruins of an ancient Roman amphitheater andharbor. We continue to the artists’ village ofEin Hod, set amidst olive groves at the footof Mt. Carmel overlooking the sea, where artistsof all media come to live and work in a stunningnatural setting. Here we visit the Janco-Dadaart museum featuring the work of founder MarcelJanco and other artists of the Dada movement.Then we travel through the hills of Galilee, stoppingat a working farm before reaching our hotel onthe grounds of a kibbutz founded in 1916. Day 5: Mount Bental/Tiberias This morn-ing we visit Mount Bental in the Golan Heightsfor a panoramic view of Israel, Lebanon, Syria,and Jordan. Then we descend on foot to KibbutzMerom Golan at the base of the mountain. Wecontinue by coach to Tiberias and our historichotel on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Day 6: Tiberias/Nazareth We travel toJesus’ boyhood home of Nazareth, now a centerof Christian pilgrimage. Here we visit the Churchof the Annunciation, the largest church in theMiddle East and where the archangel Gabrieltold the Virgin Mary that she would give birthto Jesus. Our next stop is the Mount of Beatitudes,where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount;then Tabgha, site of the Miracle of the Loavesand Fishes; and the ruins of Capernaum, whereJesus taught in the synagogue on the Sabbath.After lunch together on the shores of Galilee,we take a walking tour through the medievalstreets of Safed, center of Jewish mysticism andhome to many artists. We participate in a Kabalaworkshop and visit some of the galleries herebefore dining tonight at a local restaurant. B,L,D

Day 7: Tiberias/Jerusalem On our way toJerusalem today we stop at the archaeological siteof Bet Shean, where ongoing excavations haverevealed the ruins of numerous cities dating as farback as the 4th century BC. Then we travel on toJerusalem, the 3,000-year-old “City of Gold,”sacred to the world’s three major religions. We getour first look at the revered city from a panoramiclookout. And we get our first taste of this multi-cultural enclave at the bustling outdoor market ofMachane Yehuda (“Shuk”), encountering localresidents as they shop for the Sabbath. B

Day 8: Jerusalem Our day begins with a tourof Yad Vashem, Israel’s living memorial to theHolocaust set on a 45-acre site on the Mount of

Remembrance. From here we travel to theJudean Hills where we enjoy an ethnic cookingclass followed by lunch served with local wines.We return to our hotel early afternoon; theremainder of the day (and this Sabbath eve) is atleisure until we dine together tonight at thefabled Colony Restaurant. Day 9: Jerusalem/Masada Today we travelto the shores of the Dead Sea to explore theQumran Caves, where the Dead Sea Scrollswere discovered between 1947 and 1956. Thenwe travel to the ruins at Masada, a UNESCOsite, where outnumbered Jews held out againstthe Romans then committed suicide rather than

surrender during the First Jewish-Roman War inthe first century AD. We ascend the mountainfortress by cable car to tour the ruins, overlookingthe Dead Sea. Then we have the opportunity toswim in the Dead Sea before lunch together. B,L

Day 10: Jerusalem/Old City We discoverJerusalem itself today, starting with the originalsettlement of the City of David. Here an archaeol-ogist gives us an in-depth account of Jerusalem’srole throughout history. Then we embark on awalking tour through the Old City: the JewishQuarter; the ancient Cardo marketplace still in usetoday; the Dome of the Rock, Islam’s most impor-tant mosque; and theWesternWall, sacred to Jewsas the last remaining trace of the wall that enclosedand supported the Second Temple on the TempleMount. Day 11: Jerusalem This morning we return tothe Old City to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher,traditional site of Golgotha where Jesus is believedto have been crucified and buried. Then we tourthe colorful markets nearby before returning to theNew City and the Israel Museum, housing theDead Sea Scrolls, Shrine of the Book, and a scalemodel of Jerusalem from the Second Temple era.The remainder of the day is free for independentexploration. Day 12: Jerusalem/Bethlehem We travel totheWest Bank city of Bethlehem, birthplace ofboth King David and of Jesus of Nazareth – andhome of the Church of the Nativity (please notethis excursion depends on security clearance). Wecontinue on to Ein Kerem, birthplace of Johnthe Baptist and Christian pilgrimage site.
