Highlights included wins by 1 st AFL and volleyball, our 1 st XI hitting 201 but succumbing to Padua’s batting effort and our fleet sailors providing strong performances that set up their season. There also appeared to be much enjoyment through involvement. Interhouse swim meets were also held last week and continue this week with participation and house spirit generating enjoyment. iSPORT 1958 – 2019: Play Your Role

Week 2 of the summer sport season will again see Primary AFL,

swimming, volleyball, cricket and sailing in competitive

situations. It will be highlighted by the St Peters clash in

volleyball. Some teams have a varied draw this weekend and

some have byes, so all families of players are requested to check

schedules.

The Padua round tested our ability and organisation, while the

Primary AFL teams faced strong St Laurence’s teams and our

swimmers competed against Ashgrove. Highlights included wins

by 1st AFL and volleyball, our 1st XI hitting 201 but succumbing to

Padua’s batting effort and our fleet sailors providing strong

performances that set up their season. There also appeared to

be much enjoyment through involvement.

Interhouse swim meets were also held last week and continue

this week with participation and house spirit generating

enjoyment.

Our high performance area sees numerous district and regional

trials underway. In this area, the selection of Connor O’Neill in

the Queensland U18 Beach Volleyball Team and the Australian

Junior Volleyball Squad is outstanding. Beau Brown also gained

selection in the Australian U15 Volleyball Team to play Japan and

is in the Australian Youth team to tour Thailand. Another

outstanding effort.

Years 5/6 Thursdays 7.00am @ cricket nets

Mr Allen will be running sessions for any boys wanting to

increase their skills being a wicketkeeper and get some much

needed practice. The sessions will be based around the technical

aspects of wicketkeeping and also being exposed to a large

volume of catching.

Boys will need to bring their keeping gloves if they have them,

their Iona sport uniform and their grey uniform to get changed

into after training.

High Performance Sports Information Evening

There is a High Performance Sports Information Evening on

Tuesday 19 February in the Lecture Theatre at 7.00pm. Parents

and students of Iona are welcome to attend. Please email Mr

Mr Kai Morris (Sports Psychologist) will give a presentation to

parents regarding the wellbeing of elite school boy athletes. His

presentation will give some insight into building a framework

that supports your sons.

Lytton Representative Sports Trials (Ages 10, 11 and 12) Iona College is part of the Lytton District in representative sport

for students born in 2009, 2008, 2007. The College sends

students for a variety of sports trials. We are usually very limited

with how many students we can send to each trial. Students

have already been asked to nominate for Term 1 Sports. Any

student who has not registered his interest in any Lytton sport

for Term 1 should contact Mr Pritchard on

[email protected]. Students who are selected to

attend the trial will receive paperwork with specific information

including date, time, venue etc. Please note Lytton is

representative sport and the College will only send students who

we believe are capable of making the Lytton team.

Mountain Biking

Forty-four families attended a mountain biking meeting this

week so as to provide ideas as to how the sport will move

forward. The progression will involve:

- Long term planning: establishing the sport within the current Iona sporting landscape, developing training and competition routines and the building of a track.

- Short term planning: focusing on parent involvement,

conducting an Iona based introductory course most

likely in Term 2, designing competition attire and

establishing a competitive team under the Iona banner.

Formulating a workable communication pathway is also

needed. The goal is to get our boys safely riding their

bikes in Black and White!

iSWIM 2019 – 500/400

Iona AIC Swim Team

The trial meet against Ashgrove came on top of Primary

interhouse swimming. Many thanks to our Years 5/6 squad for

their determined efforts. Prominent efforts from our seniors

included Bailey George, Riley Mather, Jack Martin, Kai Thomas,

Kyan Muir and Thomas Sullivan.

All swimmers yet to nominate for Met East must see Mr Harron

by Friday.
