ISO/TS 29001 has now been accepted as the baseline requirement for qualitymanagement systems in the exploration and production sector of the petroleum andnatural gas industry. The third edition of ISO/TS 29001 was released in June 2010.

Quality Management System for oil, gas and petrochemical industries

A successful partnership between ISOand the international oil and gasindustry has resulted in thepublication of a new technicalspecification for implementing ISO9001:2000-based quality managementsystems in the sector. ISO/TS 29001 isenvisaged to become the commonand unique basis for the oil and gasindustry’s quality management systemrequirements worldwide. ISO/TS29001 is available for use bymanufacturers of oil and gas industryequipment and materials (upstreamand downstream), service providers tothe oil and gas industry, purchasers of

equipment, materials, and services.The document can also be used fororganizations to perform auditingand certification. This singleworldwide system will replace theneed for multiple systems, audits andcertifications.Why industry specific?The current worldwide standard forquality management systems, ISO9001:2000, is a generic one that mustsatisfy the needs of many types ofindustry and organization. It reflectsfeedback on the previous ISO 9000versions that the requirements werenot flexible enough and did not allow

for adaptation for software companies,manufacturers of simple consumerproducts, and services such asinsurance and banking. In contrast,due to the critical needs of theinternational oil and gas industry, thissector requires rigorous conformity toengineering, user and regulatoryrequirements. The development ofISO/TS 29001 has fulfilled that needand has brought a morecomprehensive quality managementsystem to this critical industry.

ISO/TS 29001:2010Quality Management System for oil, gas and petrochemical industries

In order to best serve the interests of the industry, and as a method of better ensuringthe safety of personnel and the environment, engineers, purchasers, users,manufacturers, service organizations and suppliers ISO/TS 29001 has been developed foroil, gas and petrochemical industries.

Supplementary requirements

A technical specification, ISO/TS29001 incorporates the verbatim textof ISO 9001 and includes detailed,sector-specific requirements fordesign, development, production,installation and service of products.Although some of the supplementaryrequirements may be viewed as notspecific to the oil and gas industry,they are needed in ISO/TS 29001 inorder to ensure that the requirementsare more explicit and can be morereadily verified/audited.

Which companies can apply for ISO/TS 29001?ISO/TS 29001:2010 is the result ofcooperation between the AmericanPetroleum Institute (API) and ISOtechnical committee ISO/TC 67,Materials, equipment and offshorestructures for petroleum,petrochemical and natural gasindustries.

They developed ISO/TS 29001 –which is also published as API Q1 – toprovide a single QMS document tomeet the needs of the oil and gasindustries worldwide, specifically themajor petroleum, petrochemical andnatural gas organizations, as well asgovernment and regulatory agencies,It provides a basis for qualification ofthe QMS of equipment manufacturersand service suppliers. users include the following:

< Organizations involved inexploration, production,pipelines and transportation, andrefining of petroleum andnatural gas products

< Organizations involved in thedesign, manufacture, installation,service and repair of equipmentused in the exploration,production, transportation andrefining of petroleum andnatural gas products

<  Organizations that providetechnical, operational andsupport services to the variousindustry sectors identified above.

New Edition of ISO/TS 29001:

The new version of ISO/TS29001:2010 was released in June2010. The third edition has beenupdated to include the text of ISO9001:2008, the generic QMS standard,unaltered and in its entirety.Petroleum, petrochemical and naturalgas industry sector-specificsupplemental requirements are givenoutside the boxes.

Transition Rules:

< The current ISO/TS 29001:2007(old version) certificates shallremain valid until 2012-05-31, i.e.,

2 years from the date ofpublication of the 2010 yearedition of the standard.

< The certificates can be issued forthe 2010 edition standard duringany of the scheduled upcomingcoming audit.

< If the transition is done as part ofperiodic audit, the validity of thenew certificate will remain sameas current certificate.

<  There is no extra man days to beapplied by DNV for the purposeof the transition
