ISO/TS 16949:2009
The uniform basis for certifications in automotive industry and for subsuppliers
Motivation and benefits
ISO/TS 16949:2009 is a standard in automotive industry
that is recognized world-wide. This standard has signifi-
cantly contributed to making the requirements placed on
management systems in automotive industry more uni-
form. In earlier times multiple certifications had to be con-
ducted. For in different European countries and America,
there were different standards, such as QS 9000 in the
US, VDA 6.1 in Germany, EAQF in France and AVSQ in
Italy, and these standards were not recognized one with
the other. Today ISO/TS 16949:2009 is recognized by all
the automobile manufacturers world-wide and partly even
compulsory for certification (Tier 1 Suppliers).
Today an organization will automatically also meet the re-
quirements of ISO 9001:2008 as well as the basic expec-
tations of many automobile manufacturers and supplier
industry as a whole once it has been certified acc. to ISO/
TS 16949:2009.
ISO/TS 16949:2009 certification can exclusively be per-
formed by certification bodies that are recognized and
accredited by IATF (International Automotive Task Force)
and by specially qualified auditors.
At the moment ISO/TS 16949:2009 is a harmonized stan-
dard, which includes the requirements the most important
automobile manufacturers world-wide place on quality
management systems. It is a matter of strategically further
developing quality management based on ISO 9001:2008
by integrating the additional requirements automotive in-
dustry places in management and structure. Today many
automobile manufacturers absolutely require certification
acc. to ISO/TS 16949:2009 as a prerequisite for being
admitted to the pool of suppliers. This requirement also
specifies it is necessary to demonstrate that all the sup-
pliers that are part of the supply chain must, at least, be
certified acc. to ISO 9001:2008 and further have proces-
ses and operations conforming to ISO/TS 16949:2009.
Objectives
n strategic business planning
n further development of the improvement process
n secured project management, ensuring the start of
production and absolute process control in series pro-
duction (process capability)

n optimizing the value added chain
Target groups
n automotive industry and its subsuppliers
n the overall supply chain of automotive industry; this
means this refers to both direct and indirect suppliers
of products that are installed in the vehicle
Criteria
ISO/TS 16949:2009 is a technical specification (TS),
which has been created by IATF (International Automotive
Task Force), JMA (Japan Automotive Manufacturers As-
sociation) and representatives of ISO/TC 176 on the basis
of ISO 9001:2008.
ISO/TS 16949:2009
ISO/TS 16949:2009 includes the harmonized specific re-
quirements QS-9000, VDA 6.1, AVQS and EAQF place
on QM Systems, the standards referring to subsuppliers
in automotive industry.
The additional requirements placed by ISO/TS 16949:
2009 are, in addition to the relevant clauses of ISO
9001:2008, stated in a separate document (Quality ma-
nagement systems - Particular requirements for the ap-
plication of ISO 9001:2008 for automotive production and
relevant service part organizations). The requirements of
ISO 16949:2009 include:
n strategic business planning
n further development of the improvement process
n stable process capability
n reducing scatter and wastage in the supply chain
n optimizing the value added chain; and, in addition to
the standards existing up to now
n establishing a procedure enabling compliance with le-
gal provisions, people motivation and continual impro-
vement
