    NATIONAL FOREWORD

    This Indian Standard (Part 1) which is identical with ISO 11843-1 : 1997 Capability of detection Part 1:Terms and definitions issued by the International Organization for Standarization (ISO) was adopted by theBureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Statistical Methods for Quality and ReliabilitySectional Committee and approval of the Management and Systems Division Council.

    The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard withoutdeviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention isparticularly drawn to the following:

    a) Wherever the words International Standard appear referring to this standard, they should be read asIndian Standard.

    b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker in the International Standard while in Indian Standards,the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.

    In this adopted standard, reference appears to the following International Standard for which Indian Standardalso exists. The corresponding Indian Standard which is to be substituted in its place is listed below alongwith its degree of equivalence for the edition indicated:
