Islington is divided into 16 wards, as shown on the map opposite. Wards are divided into smaller areas known as Medium Super Output Areas (MSOAs). MSOAs are divided into smaller areas known as Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs). Population data for these areas can be found here.
Islington’s populationThe Office for National Statistics’ Neighbourhood Statistics website enables you to find out detailed information on populations for various areas. Below are some key facts about Islington’s population. The population makeup of an area, e.g. age, gender, ethnicity and levels of deprivation can determine the type of health issues it may face. This has a large influence over the types of health services (including physical activity) required and how best to provide them to the local population.

• Islington is a small, densely populated, inner London borough.• The vast majority of Islington’s population fall into two main groups: people renting flats in high density social housing (45%)
and well-educated city-dwellers (42%).• There is no distinct pattern in the geographical spread of these different types of people in Islington; people with very
different characteristics live side-by-side.• Islington has a growing diverse population that is relatively young. Overall population is set to rise to 235,300 by 2020.• The population of those aged 65 and over is projected to rise from 16,300 in 2010 to 18,000 by 2020. There will also be a
rise in over 85s.• In 2010, 46% of the population of Islington was aged 20 to 39.• 74% of the population is White with ethnic groups including Irish, Somali, Bengali, Turkish, Arabic, Albanian, Portuguese,
Spanish, Nigerian and Ghanaian communities.• 32% of Islington residents were born out of the UK. *source: LB Islington JSNA 2010/11
Levels of deprivation in IslingtonInformation about the deprivation of the area you’re working in can also help target your work. Deprived areas are likely to have less income so may require cheaper activities. These areas also face more health issues than less deprived areas.
• Islington is ranked the 14th most deprived borough in London out of 33 Local authorities. Deprivation levels are linked to numerous health problems (chronic illness, lower life expectancy) and unhealthy lifestyles (obesity, smoking, drugs misuse).
• Islington has high levels of deprivation coupled with areas of great wealth.
• Life expectancy is increasing, but remains lower than for England as a whole.
• In 2007-09, life expectancy at birth in Islington was 75.4 years for men and 78.3 years for England. For women, life expectancy was 81.2 years compared to 82.3 years for England.
• Life expectancy for men in Islington is on average 5.8 years less than that of women and is below that of men nationally.
• There were 1,147 deaths in Islington between 2006-08.• The main cause of death in Islington is circulatory disease,
followed by cancer.• However, a higher proportion of premature deaths are caused
by cancer than circulatory diseases.

Dominant market segments in Islington
It is useful to know as much as you can about your potential target market, their attitudes and their motivations and barriers when it comes to playing sport. Sport England have developed 19 profiles (known as ‘segments’) of typical individuals and their characteristics. Below shows Islington’s make-up in terms of these segments.

Activity levels in IslingtonKnowing the current activity levels, as well as the past activity levels, of people in the area you’re working in can help you plan for and develop sporting provision.
The Active People Survey continuously measures the number of people taking part in sport across the nation and in local communities.
Details on Islington’s activity levels can be found below:
• Its most recent survey had a sample size of 163,000 people, all aged 16 and over.
• Data goes back as far as 2005/6. • Findings are published every six months. • The key measure is known as the ‘1 X 30’
indicator, which is the number of people who have participated in moderate intensity sport for at least 30 minutes on at least four days of the last four weeks.
• More details on the Active People Survey can be found here.
• Active People also measures sports volunteering. A smaller proportion of Islington’s residents volunteer in comparison to London and England.
• Coachweb is an online sports coach management system used by Pro-Active London.

Existing provision of sport and physical activity
• The Active People Survey also measures sports club membership across the country.
• In Islington, as in London generally, there are less clubs than the rest of the country. People are more likely to take part in informal sport.
• Get Active London (GAL) is an online club and activity finder. The tables show the numbers of facilities registered with GAL.
• Clubmark is Sport England’s quality club accreditation scheme. Clubs which have Clubmark have proved they offer the right environment which ensures the welfare of members and encourages everyone to enjoy sport and stay involved throughout their lives.
