ISLE OF MULL WEST HIGHLAND AND ISLANDRUGBY SEVENS TOURNAMENT

Founded in 1985 the Isle of Mull Sevens Tournament brings together rugby clubs from all over the WestHighlands and Islands along with guests: Rugby players from all walks of life and all levels of skill competeon equal terms of skill and enjoyment.By doing this we hope to promote rugby in Scotland’s West Highlands and Islands. The very social natureof rugby and the fact that it is a game for all weathers makes it an ideal sport for our isolated rural areaswhere long trips and overnight stays are commonplace. Mull’s geographic position in the centre of thisremote area makes it the perfect setting for a competition of this nature. For these reasons the SevensCommittee award trophies to the best West Highland team in the tournament. As an added incentive thesetrophies are for the winning club to keep. The rules for this competition are on Page 26.In 1992 the Mull Sevens made rugby history by running a dual tournament for both ladies and men. Thiswas the first of its kind anywhere in the world! This makes 2006 the twentyfirst anniversary of the Worlds Most Sociable Sevens.

WEST HIGHLAND AND ISLAND TEAMSWHO HAVE ATTENDED THE ISLE OF MULL SEVENS

ISLE OF MULL RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Mull is the third largest island in the Hebrides, exceeded in area by only Lewis andSkye. The coast line, broken by sea lochs, bays and inlets, is the amazing length of over 300 miles. OnSunday 30th July, 1978 the first game of rugby was played and won on Mull! Shortly after, the Isle of MullRFC was formed and has thrived under what can only be described as arduous conditions. April 1989 wasthe most successful in the history of Mull Rugby Club with three sevens victories. These achievements andthe completion of the Garmony pitches gained the club the honour of being MacEwan’s Club of the Monthin September of 1989. In the spring of 1994 we completed our Clubhouse. In 2002 the club became the firstGlasgow and District island club to be promoted to the Scottish National Leagues.WOMENS SECTION: Mull women’s teams have won the main tournament once. The women’s rugbyteam was officially constituted into the Isle of Mull Rugby Club in 1992.CLUB PITCH: Garmony. CLUB HOUSE: Garmony Clubhouse.

ARRAN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: It is often said that Arran is Scotland in miniature - having wild mountains to the northand a fertile plain to the south. An ideal gathering ground for rugby players. Arran Rugby club was startedin September 1975 and for 10 years the club played only friendly games. In that time the hospitality of theseislanders became legendary with many a visiting team, long overdue when finally returning home! In 1985the club took a major step and joined the Glasgow District League. By careful timing of kick-offs they areable to play and return by ferry on the same day. Players are drawn from all parts of the island. Arran juniorrugby is very strong at the moment.CLUB PITCH: Lamlash Recreation Park. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Andy’s Place.

BENBECULA NOMADS RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist have been linked by bridges and causeways toform a single ‘long island’. Benbecula is separated from its neighbours by stretches of shell sand and quicksand. On the southern slope of the largest hill Rueval, all of 408 feet high, is the cave in which PrinceCharles Edward Stuart hid while waiting for Flora MacDonald. The Army have a rocket base on Benbeculaand a firing range on South Uist. In 1977 some local lads and schoolboys got together and formed a rugbyteam. They have no home for the club; hence the name Benbecula Nomads. The locals found difficulty insustaining a team and later combined with the army team. The number of civilians to service playersfluctuates from year to year. Benbecula run one team and are not in a league. Local players come from allthree islands. The mainstay of games is against the visiting units (Vu’s) for the firing programme on therocket range. The team have amazing travel difficulties. In fact on one occasion they left for a game inEdinburgh on Thursday and due to storms were not able to return until the following Wednesday! Allplaying facilities however are now provided by the army.CLUB PITCH: Airfield. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Airfield

BUTE RUGBY CLUBCLUB HISTORY: With the mountains of Arran to the south and those of Argyll to the north, Bute is alowland island in a highland setting. The capital is Rothesay, perhaps the best loved of all the Clyde resorts.Although closest of all the visiting teams to the main centres of rugby in and around Glasgow the Bute teamis also restricted by a ferry journey across the Firth of Clyde to Wemyss Bay. In fact, players leaving forMull do so by the less time consuming Rhubodach - Colintraive ferry. Bute Rugby Club was founded in1979. They run one social team.CLUB PITCH: The Meadows. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Criterion Bar

ISLAY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Islay, the southernmost of the inner Hebrides, has a population of 4,000. Each year itpays the Exchequer the equivalent of £6,000 for each man, women and child on the island! The reason forsuch riches is ‘uisge-beatha’ - the water of life! i.e. whisky, which Islay produces in large quantities.Islay R.F.C. joined the SRU in December 1983. Islay have had no word of acceptance into League Rugbyand have to rely on friendlies. They have built up a unique relationship with the Inishowen Rugby Club ofSouthern Ireland. To fulfil this fixture Islay achieved its wings by chartering a plane.CLUB PITCH: Bowmore High School. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Marine Hotel

KINTYRE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Were it not for a tiny isthmus at Tarbert, Kintyre would be a member of the innerHebrides. Principal town is Campbeltown - probably once the capital of the Celtic Kingdom of Dalriada;the name Campbeltown comes from the early 1600’s when Archibald Campbell was Earl of Argyll.Kintyre Rugby Club started in 1983 with a meeting at the Ardshiel Hotel, Campbeltown. In 1985 theyjoined the Glasgow and District League. The club is, at present, having a break.CLUB PITCH: The Meadows. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Burnside Bar

LOCHABER RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Travelling north when you cross the Ballachulish Bridge you enter Lochaber trulyScotland’s grandest landscape. Lochaber is spread at the foot of the Great Glen and at the head of LochLinnhe stands Ben Nevis. Between Ben Nevis and Loch Linnhe lies the chief town of Lochaber - FortWilliam. Lochaber R.F.C. was officially started in 1969, a good five years after Oban. Her officials pointout, however, that the first team in Fort William was playing ‘way back before the war in 1933 it ran for afew years and then folded. Lochaber is a strong West Highland team and play in the National Leagues.CLUB PITCH: Banavie. CLUBHOUSE: Banavie.

MID ARGYLL RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: In 1977 a few enthusiastic players started a team, based at Lochgilphead and called itMid Argyll. Lochgilphead is a town of Victorian and later stone houses, standing on a slope at the top ofLoch Gilp, an inlet off Loch Fyne. The Crinan Canal, which skirts the town, is a never ending source ofenjoyment as boats journey backwards and forwards from the Sound of Jura. Mid Argyll have a greattournament record being twice winners and runners-up three times and also winning BWH Team Trophy.Mid Argyll play in the Glasgow District Leagues.CLUB PITCH: Mushroom Field. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Argyll Hotel

OBAN LORN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: By West Highland standards Oban is a large town, essentially where steamers meet roadand railway. From the piers fishing boats are constantly coming and going; ferries for the inner and outerHebrides as well as a host of smaller ports leave daily and various supply boats load and unload. Duringthe summer tourists fill the rows of hotels along the front, attracted by Highland Games, Ceilidhs, Regattasor the general scenic splendour. Oban Lorn RFC, now in their 30th season, have a showpiece Clubhouse.Oban are a powerful team and play in the National Leagues.CLUB PITCH: Glencruitten. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Glencruitten.

PORT-RIGH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB - Ellen a’CheoCLUB HISTORY: The name of Port-Righ is the gaelicised form of Portree, which means King’s Harbour- conferred on the town after the visit of James V’s fleet in 1540. Eilean a’Cheo means island of mist or theMisty Isle - a bit less of a mouthful than ‘an-t eilean Sgiathanach’ (Isle of Skye). From the sea the cloudsclinging to Skye can be seen long before its craggy peaks; thus the Norsemen called it ‘Skygo’ or Isle ofClouds. It is a land of mountain and moor. Tourism apart, crofting is the main occupation of its 7,500population. Port-Righ was founded in January 1987 with the aim of promoting rugby in the island of Skye.Only a few friendlies were played until the beginning of the 87/88 season when the club applied for andwas accepted, to play in the Highland B League. Port-Righ is on a sabbatical at present.CLUB PITCH: Lyndale CLUBHOUSE/HOTEL: The Lodge

SKYE AND LOCHALSH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Skye and Lochalsh are one of the few rugby clubs whose name encompasses both islandand mainland players. An island player has to cross by ferry at Kyleakin to play, for it is on the mainlandthat the club has its facilities. Kyle of Lochalsh is a bustling little township which has a constant feeling ofcoming and going. Skye and Lochalsh was founded in 1975 and initially played only friendlies. The teamnow play in the Highland League. Skye and Lochalsh were the first winners of our trophy with a superbteam performance. Who will ever forget the dramatic tie-break situation against Mid Argyll in the final.CLUB PITCH: Balmacara. CLUBHOUSE/HOTEL: Balmacara Naval Base

STORNOWAY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Stornoway is the metropolis of the Western Isles and the only town of burgh size in theHebrides. It is situated towards the north-east of the single island of Lewis and Harris. Though some 25,000people live on Lewis and Harris the island contains huge barren areas. Stornoway with a good naturalharbour is a fishing port, a market and a centre for the Harris Tweed industry. Tweed manufacturers gaverise to strong border connections; Mills management often trained at the textile college in Gala. Notsurprisingly this link led to the founding of Stornoway R.F.C. in 1942. The club played for ten years, stopped for ten years and then revived. Stornoway R.F.C. runs one team based in the town with access to acouncil playing field (they lost a previous field to NATO when a runway was extended). They do not playin a league because of problems with winter ferry timetables but do play in the Brin Cup.CLUB PITCH: Bayhead. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: County Hotel

MUILEACHSCLUB HISTORY: The Muileachs have a very famous (or infamous) history of appearances at the MullSevens. Names like Jackson, Cameron, Noble, Carmichael and Swinbanks sent shivers of fear down theopposition in 1988. They re-appeared in 1990; only Carmichael remained of that first magnificent seven. On that day. May 12th 1990, the Muileachs had their finest hour, winning one game and drawing in another. They were narrowly pipped for a place in the semi-finals.In 1993 the Muileachs received a massive sponsorship deal from the combined might of the Ceilidh Place,Craignure and the Salen Hotel. They wish to pass on their thanks to the sponsors without whom the agonyof playing would not be possible. The Muileachs only take the field in dire emergency.CLUB PITCH: Any bit of mud. CLUB HOUSE: As many as possible.

Introduction from the Tournament 1985

Mull Rugby Club have no facilities of its own. There is no permanentpitch and games have to be played by moving between the few areas of flatfarming land around Salen. This is totally unsatisfactory as each pitch has to be marked out fromgame to game/and is only possible through the generosity of farmers. The first pitch we had at Salen was on part of the air strip. On a numberof occasions games had to be stopped in "mid flight" to allow light aircraftto land. We eventually found another venue. However, this led to our mosthumiliating moment when, after a league game the visiting team officiallycomplained to the union because there were too many cow pats on thefield. This was even more upsetting as our players had spent the morningremoving barrow-loads! Something had to be done. Our President, Mr Cameron White, a local businessman and pastScottish schoolboy full-back has gifted Mull RFC a piece of flat, but veryboggy land in the centre of Salen. The site is ideal, between the hotel andthe hospital. An official survey estimates the cost of making a playing surface at£59,000, of which due to grants etc., we will have to raise about £15,000. For advice on fundraising we asked John Rutherford, who is a frequentvisitor to Mull and fully aware of the club's difficulties. John suggested aseven-a-side contest with a difference. The tournament would be played onMull and involve eight teams from the Highlands and Islands. The noveltywould arise in that each club will take the field with an international playerin their side. From that gem of an idea many months ago the day of the sevens has atlast arrived. Teams have travelled from the Outer Hebrides, Skye andLochalsh, Fort William, Islay, Mid Argyll, Bute and Oban to do battle not inkilt and with claymore, but on a sports field through the rules of rugby. It isour wish that this tournament is not just for the rewards of winning, but thebeginning of close associations between remote West Highland and IslandClubs. We are all overcoming immense geographic problems, so who knows, with this determination, perhaps some day. it will be one of our players thatis the guest international.

GHA's first team, after relegation the previous season fromBT Premier League 1,came storming back and had a highlysuccessful season, avoiding relegation from BT PremierLeague 2 by one place!! The teams malaise this season isreckoned, by many highly esteemed rugby experts, to bedue to the fact that many of the team have had one eyefirmly focused on this years Mull 7's, and not as GrahamWilliamson seems to think, becausehe buggered off half way through theseason in a huff to play rugby againstchildren in Rotterdam!!

'GHA young blood' and 'GHA goldenoldies' After great success in winningthe womens bowl final GHA havecome to Mull with 2 womens teams...the young blood and the goldenoldies! we have also teamed up withthe GHA mens team to provide vitalservices at mull this year....pleasedon't be afraid to approach one ofthe pimps if you have any enquiries.

TEAM PULL: That’s the plan!

TEAM NOTICE BOARDChiefs (latest club success or perhaps gossipabout a team member)One of our players (Chu Nder) has 9 seven's inter-

Watsonians are in Mull this year withmore spectators than players. Injurieshave struck down a few players fromlast year but the pull of the 'mostsociable sevens' is far to big to miss,so they come to just drink, which iswhat most of the able-bodied playerswould rather do too.   Last year,Watsonians additional team the'Basquet Weavers' won themagnificent Pink Cup, but star playerAne 'Stampy' Baonza has sadly nowreturned to the sunny Basque regionand Basquet Weavers are "no maslargo con nosotros" (sorry, that'sSpanish not Basque).   Watsonianscontinue to promote Mull 7's and bringevery year their new squad members-better known as Mull Virgins, toexperience the highlight of the rugbycalendar.  Let's bring home the pinkcup again as we can't drink from theplate!

One example of just how much this tournamentmeans to our players, can be summed up in theattitude of one Mr Andrew Crozier, who managed toget himself ejected from New Zealand 4 months intoa year long trip, just so he could make it thisweekend. Such dedication can only be admired, however whatever he did to get deported shouldprobably not be!

For effort Sevens passion has been led by Graeme Gillie. For eight years Graeme brought the Stags rugby teamto the Mull Sevens. The Stags were so named because each year oneof the team was getting married. We wish the Stags well and hopethey return one day to rekindle the fires of romance. To support this Tony Hayes (Bute) and Emma Forbes (Kirkcaldy)announced they were getting married after meeting five yearspreviously at the sevens dance. Also Nicky (Inverness) and StanWhitaker (Locaber) married after meeting in 1997 at Mull.We have worked out that to date 14 couples have met and gotmarried at the Worlds Most Sociable Sevens. We will be starting awall plaque to couples who met at the sevens and subsequentlymarried. If you know the names of these other or any we havemissed please let a member of the committee know.
