A Batman-like hero. A 1940s era sailor. An attractive mother at a picket fence. Mystified by the retro Junk Bond posters you’ve spotted dotting island bulletin boards recently? Sarah Eppenbach, chair of Solid Waste Alternatives Program happily explains.

“Even though the Solid Waste levy recently passed with one of the largest majorities in San Juan County history, we won’t receive any funds for months,” she said. “But we need $3,000 for start-up equipment and supplies for the Dump now so the board decided to initiate a modest fundraising effort that would be fun for Lopez and in keeping with the inventive spirit of other

SWAP events – like Trashion-Fashion last summer. Junk Bond revenue will pay for such items as safety vests and Kevlar gloves for volunteers, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, eyewash stations, a computer and printer, walkie-talkies, and grounds keeping tools.“

SWAP Board Member and Vice Chairwoman Kate Scott, came up with the idea of “Junk Bonds” inspired by U.S. War Bond programs used to raise funds during World Wars.

“We liked the play on words, the strong message of unity and the idea of adapting that great poster art to generate public inter-est. Unlike historic War Bonds, however, our bonds are ‘junk,’” Eppenbach says. “They’re worthless in monetary terms, but priceless in value to our community.”

Scott is the creative artist for the $25 bonds [shown above], “redeemable for absolutely nothing” except free shopping at the Take-It-Or-Leave-It. Glen Maxson, SWAP treasurer, produced the posters and placed them on island bulletin boards.

Says Maxson, “When you buy a $25 Junk Bond, you get a frameable piece of art signed by Scott, you help out the Dump, and you invest in the island’s future as a clean, healthy environ-ment where we residents recycle more and more and discard

less and less.” Lopez Junk Bonds, say SWAP board members, make the

ultimate holiday gift. They’re locally made, packable, mailable and totally recyclable. Bonds and a limited run of Lopez Island Dump T-shirts will be sold at the Islander Craft Fair, Dec. 1 and 2 and at the Holiday Stress-Free Arts and Crafts Show at Port Stanley School, Dec. 8. SWAP has been officially reorganized as a nonprofit support organization to the Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District with revised by-laws and a new board of direc-tors. Once again we witnessed the generosity of our small community as businesses, churches and individuals joined together to provide 49 families with a bountiful Thanksgiving meal. Pies, bread, turkeys, smoked salmon, fixins and other dona-tions assured that these 180 community members could celebrate in their homes on Thanksgiving Day. Protecting island culture and improving island life

The recent election saw the recom-mendations of the Charter Review Committee affirmed by the voters, sub-stantially changing the operations of our government in San Juan County.

No longer will there be an absolute separation of powers, as Proposition 2 grants administrative authority to the council. Therefore our new council will play an active role in the operations of the county.

Council members will need to be more efficient, logical and deliberate in setting policy and also in working directly with county staff in implement-ing policy.

The new positions will require indi-viduals who are able to set and carry out well-defined goals and objectives,

else the council will become hopelessly ineffective in providing quality county services.

More importantly, the new council members will need to be in even closer contact with their constituents, ALL the residents of San Juan County.

You may be asking yourself “Why is this important to me?” Over the next five months, the county will hold Special Elections and you will be asked to select candidates who you feel have the skills and experience that will allow them to serve you in this new role.

As an island resident, I live here because I enjoy our unique way of life, living in a tight-knit community that works together for common goals.

I want to make sure that council members have the capacity, time and experience, to protect our island culture. I am excited by the prospect of helping

our community as a member of the new, three member council.

However, before making my decision whether to seek election, I want to learn what you want of county government and what aspects of our community you want improved.

I want to meet with as many fellow residents as are willing to share their thoughts with me.

Santa’s coming

Santa and his merry band of photographers and elves will again arrive on Lopez for two Saturdays during the holiday season, meeting the needs of parents and grand-parents to avoid the expen-sive and time-consuming trip to the mainland to secure their annual Christmas Santa photos.

The next photo session will be held at the Lopez School Library on Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to noon during the annual Christmas Thrift Shop sale.

Santa isn’t just for kids any-more. Last year there were several adults on Santa’s lap –

a Christmas card? A greeting to their kids far away?

And, there are those whose pets are just as precious and deserving of a special visit with Santa.

Lopez teachers Diane Mayer and Elizabeth Simpson have received the 2012 Teacher of Excellence Award from The Evergreen State College. The award honors teachers who have made a differ-ence in the lives of their students.

They were nominated for the award by Jamie Cummins, a former Lopez High School student, who now attends Evergreen State College.

Michael Zimmerman, academic vice president and provost at The Evergreen State College, explained, “In an attempt to encourage our students to think about teachers who made a difference, I asked our incoming students to nominate via email the teacher they felt made the big-

gest difference in their education.”In nominating Mayer, Cummins

noted that their math teacher motivated students to try their hardest, was always there for questions and works long hours just for the students.

“She makes you care about math and was the one who got me through my high school years. She is more than just a teacher, she is a mentor,” Cummins added.

Cummins said that Simpson engages her students in deep discussions and pushes students to go farther than what was thought possible.

“She has taught me how to express myself in written words, how to hold dis-

cussions, and how to respect others. She makes her students care, we all respect her for her knowledge and caring abil-ity,” Cummins said.

Mayer and Simpson are two of 50 elementary, secondary-school or college teachers from ten states and two coun-tries to receive the Excellence Award. Each teacher receives a certificate and a window decal.

Zimmerman, creator of the award, said, “We are reminded every day that teachers change lives. What we wanted to do is encourage our students to think about teachers who have interacted with them in a professional setting and gone beyond the norm.”

this year?

Four families celebrated Thanksgiving in their new homes at Tierra Verde, the fifth affordable housing neighborhood by Lopez Community Land Trust. With babies on their mother’s stomachs, and armloads of belongings, the families moved in last week. Last minute beds were being made for a pair of twin boys, blinds put up on the windows, and a human train of friends carried their belongings into the homes.

Each homeowner was responsible for 24 hours a week of sweat equity during the construction process which began in April. Earlier in the year they also trained in working with tools, learning about land leases, occupancy agreements, budgeting, etc. These homeowners formed a housing cooperative, each household owning a share, that is, their home, with the land underneath the homes owned by LCLT. This helps ensure that the houses always remain affordable.

Interns from New York, New Hampshire, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Seattle, and more helped build these homes, as well as Boy Scouts, Camp Nor’wester campers, and community volunteers. Mitre Box was the construction com-pany with Pamela Pauly as con-struction supervisor and Sandy Bishop as Project Manager.

The homes are passive solar, with four kilowatt roof-top grid-tied solar electric, state of the art heat pumps for hot water, highly insulated windows with super tight air sealing, high efficiency windows and blinds, rainwater catchment for land-scaping, and exterior earthen plasters. These are two bedroom homes with a flex room (room without a closet) and an average of 875 square feet.

These families include six adults, two of whom were raised on Lopez, and nine children, six of whom are in Lopez Schools. They are variously employed in Island Body and Fitness Center, Village Cycles, Healing Energy Arts of Lopez, and as a record-ing musician. The director of the Happiness Initiative (www.happycounts.org) visited as they were moving in, and the hom-eowners’ smiles confirmed that joy is found in Tierra Verde.

San Juan County Sheriff ’s Department reported respond-ing to these calls:

Oct. 25: A familiar face and blemished driving record prompted the arrest of a Lopez Island woman for driving with a suspended license.

The 22-year-old, who was pulled over near the intersec-tion of Center and Nelson Roads, was taken into cus-tody at about 10:30 p.m.

Oct. 31: An 18-year-old Lopez Island man faces charges of marijuana pos-session following a late-night arrest in parking area on San Juan Island marked as no-overnight parking.

The 18-year-old, parked in a Pear Point pull-off area, allegedly had been smoking

Ole H. Snoer was born in Denmark on June 28, 1932; he passed away in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on Oct. 29.

Survivors are his wife, Shirley of Lopez Island, daughters Anna-Lisa Mills and Benedikte Snoer, sis-ter Hanne Topp and niece and nephews and cousins in Denmark.

He left home at 15 and a half to work on freighters as a cook, traveling all over Europe and the Middle East, studied the fine art of French cooking in Copenhagen, Denmark and immigrated to Australia, then came to the U.S. and opened the din-ing room at the Red Lion

in Portland with his mentor who then asked him to go to the Lakewood Terrace Resturant in Lakewood. He was there a number of years. He owned and operated GiGi’s Resturant in Federal Way and The Turning Point Resturant in Fife. He was an avid sailor, having sailed the Pacific Ocean from Alaska to the Panama Canal. He loved Golf and Car Racing. He will be greatly missed.

Memorial Services will be held at the Lopez Golf Club on Dec. 1, from 2 until 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, con-tributions to the Golf Course would be appreciated.

songs for the holidays” at Lopez Center for Community and the Arts, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m.

The group has solidified their sound after spending last summer in Italy. Islands A Cappella joined 4,000 other choris-ters, singers, instrumentalists, conductors and composers in Turin, Italy at the Europa Cantat. For 10 days, musicians took over every performance and rehearsal space in this “little Paris of Italy,” to study, learn, and perform every kind of vocal and instrumental music imaginable. In one case, they even invaded a cooking school, to spend mornings singing about Italian food and then cooking it (and eating it, too). They met and sang with choristers from all over Europe.

After performing their own open-air concert on a stage in the Borgo Mediavale, they were often hailed at other events as “that famous American choir,” much to everyone’s

amusement. About 30 seconds of that “famous” concert were broadcast, along with other Festival clips, on Italian public television.

Prior to arriving in Turin, Islands A Cappella spent 4 days touring in the Lake Como area. Concerts were presented in three of the communities surrounding the lake. The group presented a varied program, emphasizing American music and composers. Most popular with the Italian audiences were the American spirituals and the compositions of James Hardman, an Orcas resident composer.

The Lopez Island Library was pleased to bring Washington State Poet Laureate Kathleen Flenniken to the Lopez Island Elementary school to work with second through fifth graders on poetry exercises.

Flenniken is the state’s poet laureate for 2012 – 2014. The second graders in Connie Holtz’s literacy class were

informed as to what a poet laureate was, and were prepared to give Flenniken their “best attention.”

Students had questions like, “How long have you been a poet?” and “Did you write the Dr. Seuss books?”

Students wrote a “patchwork pet” poem where they created an imaginary pet with words.

Nov. 4: A Lopez Island man believes either a dog or pack of dogs is responsible for killing half of his flock of turkeys in a late-night attack outside his Hummel Lake Road home.

Eight of the 42-year-old’s 15 turkeys died in the attack, the aftermath of which he reportedly stumbled upon the following day.
