VolcHiiir Lrupllvu ut Tou;.A volcanic eruption of great magni-

tude La occurred on the of Nu-iaf- a,

one of the Tonga group. Three partsof the inland have disappeared, and anew mountain LK feet high has beenthrown up. So far as i known no liveshave ieeu lost. Before the eruption aterrific thunderstorm burst over theisland, and the natives, greatly alarmed, quitted their villages and assembled atone end of the island, which has notbeen effected by the eruption. To thiscircumstance they owe their lives, forhad they remained in their villages the '

probabilities are that they would all havebeen killed. The greater portion of theinland is now covered with mud anda-h'- -s. varying in depth from 2 to 2d feet.

'

It is stated that the reflection of theeruption wa seen at Kep;els Island.which is fullv P.M miles froni Nuiafu.Tiie eruption was first noticed by thoseon lioard the LVcres, a French war es-se- l,

who. in consequence of the islandbein,: enveloped in smoke and steam, did not deem it prudent to land. TheSuva was dispatched to the relief of theislander by the Tongan Government. The island has l.een the scene of severalvolcanic eruptions, the first of whichthere is any record having occurred 70years ago. Earthquakes were felt thereduring the New Zealand eruption.

Our IliiHiiliau Trade. As the year progresses, the increase in

our trade with the Hawaiian Kingdomcontinues. The third quarter of thisyearshows a marked advance in our exportstatistics, as supplied by Consul GeneralI). A. MeKinley. And this growth hasbeen steady throughout the year, the sec-

ond quarter showing an increase of $43,-00- 0

over tiie first, and the third showingan increase of $C3,000 over the second andof $110,000 over the first. The largestmovement was during the month of Aug-

ust, the exports then exceeding 500,000.

In September there was a decline of $258-33- 5

91 owing to the irregularity in thedeparture of the steamers, consequentupon the necessity of their being over-

hauled and the removal of the Mararoafrom the Australian mail service route inorder to make room for a larger and morecommodious steamer. The outlook forthe remainder of the year is encouraging, and we anticipate a total export trade tothe Islands, during 18S0, of over $3,000-00- 0.

The exports in September stoodthus:

Miscellaneous. In the New South Wales Parliament,

Sir Ilenrv Parkes has given notice to

being most inspiriting. The Royalparty were then escorted to the carriagesawaiting them, and were driven throughtwo lines of torches to the residence of

the Commander-in-Chie- f of our Forces,His Excellency John O. Dominis. Thegrounds there were beautifully illumin-ated, and a large concourse of jeoplesoon filled the place. After a short restHer Royal Highness and suite, His Ex-

cellency Governor Baker and lady, sev-

eral Government officials and two orthree foreigners sat down to a rechercherenast. "a la Hawaiian," during whichtime our best musical talent had ar- - j

ranged themselves on either side of thew:ilk leading from the entrance to the i

ohouse, and there during the whole evening poured forth in rich strains oursweet Hawaiian melodies. Severalguitars and a violin were used f jx ac-

companiments. This pleasant publicdemonstration of aloha for the heir ai-par-

was brought to a close alxnit 1

a. m. During to-da- y (Saturday) thePrincess received many callers, and in

her quiet way made everyone feel per-

fectly at home. This afternoon about 4

o'clock a grand luau was given in honorof our Royal guest in the Court HouseSquare, of which most of our foreignersand many Hawaiians availed them-

selves. The spread was excellent, andnot a little is due to Governor Baker andhis courteous manner in making theatfair most sociable. About 6 o'clockthe Royal party, the Governor andsuite returned to the house, and theevening has been characterize.! by sing-

ing, dancing and general merriment. The Kinau's whistle was the signal for

bringing to a close this varied social two

days' pleasure, and the party was es-

corted to the wharf through a perfectblaze of torches, when was sung ouranthem, and sung, too. with heart aswell as voice, and so ends the visit of

our Royal lady.

A Chance for an Ocean Kaee. The San Francisco Examiner of Octo-

ber 7th says: "Special preparations arebeing made for the celebration of KingKalakaua's fiftieth birthday, which oc-

curs November 10th. The Pacific YachtClub of this city has been invited toparticipate, and as an inducement to theyachtmen three prizes are offered for arace to the islands. The first is a $1,000trophy, the second $500 and the third acup."

The Alameda. The Alameda arrived at San Francisco

October 2d, making the quickest trip on

record. ' The time from Sydney wastwenty-thre- e days, six hours and thirtyminutes; from Auckland, eighteen days, four hours and forty-fou- r minutes, andfrom Honolulu, six days and eight hours. The Mararoa's fast time was thus beaten.

An i;xeetional Circumstance. At the present moment the United

States Government has no diplomaticagent at these Islands, the Minister llesi-de- nt

and the Consul General both beingabsent. This has not been the case atany time previously during the lasttwenty years.

Tlie est JJuil.By the Claus Spreekels, which arrived

on Sunday, we learn that the brigantineYVm. G. Irwin was to leave San Fran-

cisco October 13th with the mails for

Honolnlu. She may be looked for to-

morrow or Wednesday. The Royal Mailsteamer Alameda will be due on Satur-day with dates to the 2:d instant.

A Photograph of Hen llutler.Mr. 13. F. Butler, trying a case in th

In his buttonhole hewore a yellow rose, and when he left theroom to return to the Continental hejauntily perched on his head the dingyslouch hat, far more aged in its appear-ance than its hale-lookin- g owner." Appearance of Cardinal Manning.Cardinal Manning is the very dream of"

emaciation physically, and of zeal men-tally. His face is more than gaunt: it isspectral m its thinness. The ridge ofcheekbone from ear to ear stands out likea ringer laid upon the tle,h. The hollowsabout the drawn, thin lipped mouth arecavernous. The deep, weird eyes look outfrom caverns. The upper forehead bulgesas if it would force apart the tight-stretche- d

skin. It is a face which thepainter would seek for utmost impressive- -'

Blotting !atAnd in fact everything which a first-cla- ss

office can do- -

sistance of the few men who were there, ;

did their best to battle w ith the riames. j

These were confined to the forward partof the hold, where 17o hales of hay had ;

been stowed tlie previous day fur shij- - !

ment to the Pahala plantation. The hay j

had been lying on the wnarf lor .some

days previous, and was apparently freefrom ignition when placed on board. No cause can with any certainty be as-

signed for the casualty, but the veryprobable theory has been advanced thatthe recent showers produced a dampnesswhich resulted in spontaneous combustion. The watchman states that at 111

p. m. lie rai.-e-d the corner of the tarpau-

lin and noticed nothing unusual. It isevideat, however, judging from the holdthe fire had obtained when discovered, that .some portion of it must have beensmouldering for a considerable length oftime. Be this as it may, at I o'clock theflames were beginning to forct- - their w ayup through the deck at every vulnerablepoint and .oon shot up several feet aboveit, until it became far from certainwhether or not they could be vanquished.Precisely at 1 :4.' a. m. the intelligencereached No. 2 fire statiun. WatchmanTownsend, who was in charge at thetime, promptly rang the alarm, and be-

ing joined by bin comrades to the num-

ber of about :0, at once repaired to thespot, the engines from No. 1 and No. 4

stations arriving shortly afterwards. A

large crowd had now assembled on ihewharf and the scene was one of intenseexcitement. Among the members of thefire brigade the strictest discipline pre-

vailed, and Captain Hates, who arrivedabout 2 o'clock , sp'aks in eu!ogitic termsof the ttehavior of the men under com-

mand of Chief Engineer Charles I'.Wilson. The skillful direction of the lat-

ter was the means of avoiding any un-

necessary destruction of property, andwith the exception of t he removal of afew planks in the deck and the cuttingof three holes sufficiently large to admitthe hose, there are no signs of the fire-

man's hatchet. By 3 o'clock the deter-mined and intelligent efforts of the brig-

ade had produced a marked effect, by 4

o'clock the fire was fairly under controland at 5 it was practically extinguished.

The cargo in that portion of the holdwhere the fire occurred consisted solelyof the 175 bales of hay already mentioned, which is so far damaged as to li entirelyuseless. A quantity of it has beenthrown out upon the wharf, and muchstill remain's aboard, where it was com-

pletely flooded with water. It is theproperty of the Hawaiian AgriculturalCompany.

The steamer has sustained considera-ble damage to her timbers, which willtake at least a week to repair. Two ofher deck frames w ill require to be re-

moved, as also three of her hangingknees and about one-thir- d of her deck. She is owned by the Interisland SteamNavigation Company, who do their owninsurance. The steamer was built in1SS4 and has never met w ith a casualtybefore. She is commanded by CaptainBates, who claimed to have enjoyed anabsolute immunity from accidents of aserious nature dining the time that hehas held his certificate. It is probablethat the steamer Iwalani, belonging tothe same company, will take the placeof the W. G. Hall on her next trip.

Quick Travel. The latest excitement in ocean travel

BCcrus to be the desire of the steamerson the Australian line to beat eachother's record. A month ago we hadthe Mararoa arriving here at an earlierhour than ever was known, while thismonth we had the Alameda alongsidethe wharf some three hours earlier, al-

though she was detained four hours inAuckland, and waited in Honolulu fivehours lunger than the Mararoa. Thismakes the Alameda's actual steamingtime twelve hours less than the Mara-

roa. Both vessels have done excellentwork, and it now remains for the recordof the American steamer of the OceanicCompany to be low ered by another com-

petitor. This month will again see theNew Zealand mails delivered in Londonin thirty-tw- o days. The effect of thisquick communication has been to attrac t

considerable attention to the San Fran-cisco service, which will probably re-

sult in a livelier passenger movement inour direction. San Franeisc Mer-

chant.

I'xnorninii of tlie Volnuio.Jules Tavernier's great picture of Ki-lau-

is now on exhibition in Hilo. inthe Beck with Skating Kink building, andis a grand picture to view. Halemau-ma- u

and the New Lake stand out grand-ly. Maunalea is also seen to tine advan-tage. Maunakea appears small in thedistance. There is also a view of the '

Volcano House. The canvas is 90 uvtlong and 11 feet high. When placed in j

a larger building it will appear muchgrander than it docs in the small place i

where it is now exhibited. It is three months since the pictures '

were commenced. There can be ijdoubt it will prove a grand success inevery respect, and when the mammothpicture of the Volcano and surrounding i

scenery, which Tavernier intends topaint, is exhibited in California, it 'willdoubt'e-- s attract great attention to theseIslands. In a short time tiv picturewill be shown to the people of Honolulu, when it is to be hoped that the giftedartist will meet with much ent ourage- - j

jnent.
