A CONVERSATION BETWEEN PETER SALLICK, CEO / CREATIVE DIRECTOR, WATERWORKS,

AND JILL PLATNER, JEWELER AND SCULPTOR

Peter: I became interested in the idea of organic design for our products;

how to translate more natural forms, surface textures and materials in an

interesting direction. It was visiting Jill’s New York shop — seeing her jewelry

and sculpture — when I realized that she creates what we had in mind.

Jill: Peter and I looked at some of my existing pieces and took it

from there. While my work is really organic, I’ve never had to work

with dimensional restrictions already in place. Here, I had to design

around functional requirements, which made it interesting.

Jill: When I’d get the castings back, I’d marvel at how amazing

they were. There was no compromise, no cutting corners.

Jill: It’s a very tactile product. How many times per day do you

touch a faucet? So it goes back to my jewelry and sculpture —

something made by hand that you want to touch.

Peter: Waterworks’ biggest challenge was engineering the

dimensional pieces from the designs — as a sculptor, Jill was

giving us wax forms, so it was never a 2-D process. We were

used to working with drawings, which are easy to manipulate.

We had to push the technology.

Peter: As a company, it’s exciting to share a completely

new product offering. What I like best is that this is the

most simplistic thing we’ve ever done. It’s two simple

handles, one simple spout. They have many nuances

because of the detail and the way that they partner, but

it feels organic. The burnished finishes give it a softness

that underscores the sculpted story.
