Isla de Margarita - The Pearl of the Caribbean

Short History

Known as La Perla del Caribe, or the Pearl of the Caribbean, the Margarita Island is part of Venezuela and is the largest island of the Nueva Esparta state. Located close to the mainland and having the status of a duty-free port, this Caribbean island Venezuelans favourite place to come for a weekend or a holiday getaway. On the other hand, Europeans and Americans are attracted by the clear, turquoise water and the white-sand beaches.

The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498 on his third journey! Initially, he called the place La Asuncion, because the day he found the island was the day when the festival of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was held. However, due to the enormous amount of natural pearls found by Columbus, he changed the name to Margarita a year later.

Getting There

By air - The Del Caribe-Santiago Mario Caribbean International Airport is serviced by several airlines that provide flights from and to Europe, Latin and North America and the Caribbean region. The airport is about 25 km southwest from Polamar, the biggest city on the island.

By sea - You can take a passenger/vehicle ferry from mainland Venezuela, which is usually preferred by locals who can wander around the island with their cars or motorbikes. Or you can take the express ferry.

What to Do

Margarita island is famous for its beautiful beaches, which can offer something for everyone. Whether you want to relax on a deserted beach or to be among other tourists, or you prefer deep or shallow waters, with or without waves, warm or lukewarm water - La Perla del Caribe has it all. Additionally, sightseers will be happy to hear that there are plenty of old churches and castles open for visits and the nature is outstanding too. Moreover, there are great walking trails, so you don't have to worry that you'll get lost.
