Curriculum change in Malaysia. The English Hour By: Mohd Effendee
Malaysia has changed the curriculum to a text based lesson. We are now using the English literacy hour or we call it the English hour.
It comprises of 4 stages 1: Shared Reading / Writing 2: Teaching Point or Grammar Item 3: Independent Work and Guided Reading 4: Summing up
Shared reading is conducted in the beginning of the lesson; students will share the reading with the teaching. Share the reading? The teacher will read from a big book or more preferable a text typed in a presentation on a LCD projector. Students will listen and share the reading. Students may repeat some words but the whole text is read by the teacher.
Teaching Point or grammar item will come from the text. The teacher will pick out grammar items which can be taught to the students. In this process the teacher will do most the explaining. Only one or two grammar item to be taught on each lesson.
Independent work and Guided Reading is conducted during the practice stage in some countries. Students will be grouped into several groups which have different level of students. A task will be given to them to do. Upon completing the task they should exchange the task with the other students. Meanwhile the teacher will call up 3 students to her/his table to guide them to read. The text should be familiar to the students in order to read.
Summing up is as the same as any other country where the teacher sums up the lesson. The teacher may do some interesting activities such as jazz chants, poems and many more. Actually any method or approaches in other countries are quite the same. It is the teacher who plays the important role in classroom teaching. Teachers are the unsung heroes of their respective countries we must try our best to achieve our national education philosophy.
