Since its inception, After-The-Bell has served over 3,900 students, providing a safe place after school where they can participate in enriching activities, learn new skills, make friends, and spend time with caring, adult role-models. After-The-Bell utilizes the talents, wisdom, and resources of over 200 community volunteers and has more than 60 partnerships with local businesses, non-profits and community groups.

After-The-Bell is held from 2:35pm–5:00pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during three, 6-week cycles in the fall, winter, and spring. Immediately after school, students enjoy a healthy snack followed by two hour-long activities or a double session from 3pm–5pm all led by community volunteers. After-The-Bell comes at no direct cost to the students, school district, or local taxpayers. The Kennett After-School Association is extremely grateful for the strong partnership with the Kennett Consolidated School District, which provides the use of the Kennett Middle School facility for the program. We are also truly grateful for the Kennett Consolidated School District faculty and administration, who support the program with their volunteer service and personal financial gifts.

The Kennett After-School Association recognizes that a key to success for our children comes from community investment in our youth. Consequently, the After-The-Bell program was created to engage the community in keeping children safe between the critical hours of 3pm–5pm when many would be left unsupervised and at-risk.

The After-The-Bell Program celebrated its fourteenth year by offering 153 fun and enriching activities and special projects. Here are just a few highlights from the 2012-2013 school year:

Learning Continues After School

Over 200 hours of homework assistance in both English and Spanish were provided thanks to the efforts of current, retired, and student teacher volunteers along with staff from the CCIU Migrant Education program.

Collaborating With The Community

After-The-Bell strengthened its many community collaborations by including new partnerships with the Kennett Square Golf & Country Club and The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia.

Coming Full Circle

The Kennett After-School Association welcomed its first ATB alum, Rosendo Mata, who joined the board of directors.

Returning To Lead

Past ATB participant Austin McDonough Fisher created a new partnership for After-The-Bell with the Kids First Swim School by volunteering his services to teach lessons to non-swimmers.

During the Lights on Afterschool national rally for afterschool programs, Mayor Matthew Fetick honored and thanked the After-The-Bell program for its service and dedication to our community.

Exploring Career Paths

Middle school is the perfect time to explore career paths with hands on experience at the Technical College High School. ATB also offered many field trips to visit local professionals and businesses.

Honoring Our Volunteers

After-The-Bell students were extremely grateful for the over 200 community volunteers who shared their time and talents with them.

Learning From Local Professionals

Local artist Susan B. Myers introduced ATB students to Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Warhol – inspiring them to create their own art. They were honored by Doug Harris of the Eco Boutique with an exhibit and reception.

Making A Difference

By cooking hot meals for a local homeless shelter, creating bowls for the food cupboard, and arranging flowers for cancer survivors, ATB kids learned that everyone can make a difference.

Making Memories

Afterschool is the perfect time for learning about the latest technology in video recording and having fun too!

I have always said that the Kennett community is the best place to live and raise a family. This community supports its schools, churches, charitable organizations, and especially the children.

Over the past fourteen years, I have lost count of the number of school districts and organizations that have told me how fantastic our After-The-Bell program is then asked how they could replicate it. I tell them that we exist thanks to over 200 volunteers and the generosity of our donors, foundations, and community groups. Each year, After-The-Bell serves over 300 (non-duplicated) students with a safe and enriching program after school ends. These middle school youngsters receive a snack, experience fun and exciting programs with our volunteers, and are transported home to meet their parents after work. All is free to the students and parents. We partner with the Kennett Consolidated School District for space at the middle school, but receive no funds from the district budget. After this is explained, invariably the questioner marvels at how successful the Kennett After-School Association has been at engaging the support of the school district, local organizations and community members to serve its youth.

As we enter our fifteenth year, we are committed to the excellence our middle school youngsters have enjoyed. But we constantly search for new programs and ideas to keep the programs vital and exciting. We welcome new volunteers and new ideas. And of course we must ask that the community continue supporting us. The generosity of our community partners is our main means of existence.

Please review this annual report to learn more about our mission and program. Should you wish to volunteer, please contact the After-The-Bell office at (610) 268-5889. Thank you for your interest and support.
