MISSION STATEMENT OF THE PARISH OF ST. ANTHONY We are a Catholic community of faith in the Jesuit tradition gathered around Jesus Christ and centered in the Eucharist.
In a diverse and changing world we struggle to grow in our relationship with God and with one another. Through our worship, our ministries and our promotion of peace and justice, we walk
with Jesus of the Gospel who reveals God’s love for all.

Paso 4.

ST. ANTHONY’S PRAYER CONNECTION MINISTRY
Receive the Power of Prayer Some time ago, a number of parishioners came together to form the Prayer Connection Ministry. Our members pray at home for the needs and intentions of other members of our St. Anthony Community. If you are in need of the power of prayer, we invite you to write out your petitions and drop them into the wooden box marked “Prayer Petitions,” which is located on the table at the right side of the church near the doors. These petitions are collected, printed and mailed to the Prayer Connection Ministers each month. Your needs will be remembered and lifted up in prayer by each minister.

THE WEEK IN CYO BASKETBALL
Another thrilling weekend for the St. Anthony’s
CYO program This weekend CYO of Long Island hosted its annual Sportsmanship Dinner for the girls’ pro-grams. At this dinner teams at every level are awarded the coveted Sportsmanship Award. This is given to the team whose players and coaches best exemplify what it is to have true sportsmanship on the court and is voted on by your opponents at the end of the season. The award is by no means a consolation prize; it is a highly regarded award within CYO Athletics and St. Anthony’s is proud to have won this year for our 4th grade girls’ program under Coach Beth Wassenbergh. St. Anthony’s emphasizes the proper values and lessons that should be taught and learned within youth sports and focuses on raising good athletes and even better people. Congratulations to Riley Kudlek, Lacey Wassenbergh, Juliet Gately, Claire Barrins, Courtney Friedman, Mayah Joyce and Kylie Hickey for your efforts and sportsmanship!
Our boys’ season is rolling on with a series of tight games this weekend in our 8th grade division. Coach Wassenbergh’ s 8th graders hosted another doubleheader weekend but unfortunately were beaten in both contests. The first game was one of those close games that a few different choices or errant passes could have made all the difference and was a real learning experience for the boys. They lost to Our Lady of Loretto by a few buckets despite exceptional efforts from everyone. The game was close in the stretch when Chris Lane hit a clutch short-range jumper that sparked a run late but was not enough to close the gap.
On Sunday they hosted another home game against a strong St. Al’s program. This game was a real scorcher with a dozen lead changes down the stretch. Steve Carrocia got hot at the right time with 4 straight buckets to push St. An-thony’s ahead late in the second half. With 52 seconds left in the game, we had the lead but were forced into an overtime due to some mismanaged possessions and some exceptional St. Al’s play.
In the overtime, St. Anthony’s just could not put enough shots through the cylinder to take the lead, but it was a fantastic game to watch and one that offered a ton of learning moments to build a stronger team.
On Saturday Coaches Tobin and Tobin took their team and their families on a field trip to Rockville Centre to take in a Molloy College home game. Hosted by the ex-ceedingly gracious Molloy Coach, Charles Marquardt, the group was treated to a post-game locker room visit with the Lions.
It was a great day that was accentuated by a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday against Our Lady of Lourdes. Griffin “Pineapple” Costello, Matteo Puma & Dylan Langevin were key to the scoring drives while Lucas Argento and Anthony Genna cleaned the glass and exerted stifling defensive pressure.
Coach Fucci’s 7th grade boys could not keep the streak alive and lost a barnburner to Long Beach by 2 on a pair of foul shots with 1.2 seconds left. The team was short staffed, but Luca “Bones” Nagrowski and Diego Paredo kept the ball moving and provided great scoring opportunities. Franco “Freight Train” Visone was a sight to watch driving to the basket and running the point spot. Leander Fucci was a monster on the glass while Raymond Cenci, Gerard O’Grady and Connor Jaffe had huge defensive games.
Coach Guma and Conry’s 8th grade boys have proven to be quite dynamic as they defended their undefeated streak, to go 8-0, in an overtime game against OLP this weekend. The trailed by double digits late in the 4th quarter but caused a series of turnovers with an oppressive full court pressure that would force the game into overtime. In the extra session the defensive pressure was in full effect and St. Anthony’s won the day by putting a lid on the rim for OLP and came out on top with a 9-point win. Let’s keep this going guys! Well Done!
Coach Frank Wassenbergh’s 7th grade team came out hot in their Saturday home-court defense against St. Joseph’s and jumped to an early lead and never looked back. Declan Costello provided an much needed early spark with 4 quick points in the opening run while Jack Luttrell, Magic Purrman and Sean Hunt combined for a dozen points and almost as many steals as they kept the visiting team off balance.
Adding to the win was Robert Wallace’s aggressive man-to-man defense throughout the game that helped keep the opponent’s best player occupied. Coach Triscari’s boys finished the week on a loss in a very good match against neighboring East Rockaway. Santino Puma was impressive in the loss as he played both sides of the court well but was especially strong on the defensive side. Holding the team to a low score was impressive but our kids just couldn’t produce enough points against a solid East Rockaway team. Congratulations to all of our teams. We look for-ward to more thrilling games in the coming weeks.

Today we celebrate the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our Gospel is from Matthew and is the recounting of the early days of Jesus public ministry after His baptism by John the Baptist.
Jesus, upon learning that John the Baptist had been arrested, withdraws to Galilee to live in Capernaum. We learn that by doing this, Jesus is fulfilling the words of Isaiah the Prophet found in the Old Testament which named the region that the promised one would come from to lead God’s people “... out of darkness and into the light." Jesus returns from this place preaching to all who will listen to “repent” and prepare for the Kingdom of heaven.
We also hear in this Gospel about the first disciples Jesus recruits - Peter and Andrew, John and James. All leave their families and way of life to follow Jesus - to learn from him and help him as he travels teaching the Good News. They do not yet understand who He is - but they know in their hearts that this is what they are called to do at this moment in time - to say "yes" to Jesus' invitation to follow him and become "fishers of men".

Diocese of Rockville Centre announces Morning Star Initiative
As you may have heard, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has decided to launch a bold plan, called the Morning Star Initiative, to revitalize Catholic elementary school education on Long Island.
The goal of this initiative is to restore a robust Catholic culture to the DRVC schools, improve academics, and create a more fiscally sustainable model for schools.
The Diocese will partner with the Marianists, who have two centuries of Catholic educational commitment and expertise. The Diocese has asked Brother Thomas Cleary, S.M., President of Chaminade High School, to serve as the Chief Revitalization Officer and to spearhead this effort. He will be assisted by his fellow Marianists, who will seek feedback and ideas from the full spectrum of those with a stake in a revitalized Catholic elementary education, including our parish-ioners.
We value your input, so please share your thoughts. Please visit the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s website at Morningstarinitiative.org for more information, and email [email protected] to give feedback or find out more ways to get involved.
Caregiver's Day of Prayer Please join us on Friday February 14, 2020
9:30 am -12:00 pm at Tabor House – St. Anthony’s.
Many of us are bearing the burden dealing with elderly parents, relatives, friends and children with disabilities. There are many of us who have already made this journey. You are invited to spend a morning of support with God. There will be time for presentations, prayer, reflection and sharing. If you are involved in caring for another, you need time for yourself, and time to pray for the graces you need to cope with for these situations. If you have experienced this, God may be asking you to share your sup-port for those now doing this. Your advice will be deeply appreciated. Presented by Irene Rush MPH, RN, Spiritual Director and Instructor in Community Nursing Molloy College and Laura DeLuca, Spiritual Director.
