An estimated 1 in 65 Irish pupils are autistic – and the majority of these children attend mainstream schools. But the secondary school environment in particular poses big challenges for a student with Autism. The understanding and support of one’s peers is a key factor in one’s ability to overcome these challenges and be successful and happy in the classroom and beyond. IS YOUR SCHOOL AUTISM AWARE? INTRODUCING THE ASIAM SECONDARY SCHOOL PROGRAMME This 90 minute workshop has been developed by AsIAm (Autism Spectrum Information, Advice & Meeting point), a national charity established to advise and empower people affected by Autism and to create greater public awareness of the condition. All too often students with Autism experience isolation or even bullying at school – chiefly because their fellow-students don’t appreciate the nature and effects of Autism or what they can do to make life easier for people living with it. The AsIAM Secondary School Programme is designed to enable all students to learn more about Autism and how they can become more supportive and inclusive of fellow-students with the condition. The workshops are delivered in an engaging and easy-to-understand manner by trained volunteers, all of whom are either people with direct personal experience of Autism or professionals in the field.
