Protection Program to help combat recurrent flooding. Citizens can learn

COVID-19 vaccination clinics will be held in Virginia Beach and at the regional clinic at

Military Circle Mall this week. Clinics at Military Circle Mall will now be held Tuesdays,

Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome.

Available vaccines include Johnson & Johnson (one dose), and the first and second doses of

Moderna and Pfizer. Third doses are also available, as directed by the CDC, for those individuals

who are immunocompromised. It is recommended that individuals who believe they may be

eligible for the third dose should consult their physician or refer to CDC guidelines. Those under

18 will be offered the Pfizer vaccine and must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Some of Virginia Beach’s first responders and friends,

including Sparky the Fire Dog, Cell Phone Sally and

McGruff the Crime Dog, got together to share some positive

messages to welcome students back to school and help kick-

off the new school year! They offered friendly reminders to

be on the lookout for students crossing streets; slow down

driving in school zones; be patient with school buses making

frequent stops; and stop when buses’ flashing lights are on.

memorial display in front of

the Police Headquarters, Bldg.

11, honors each of the lives

lost with 2,997 flags and a

banner to “never forget.”

The public safety community will also mark the date by paying tribute to their fallen brethren by

participating in the “9/11 Honor Carry” on Saturday, Sept. 11 from noon to 4 p.m. at the

Oceanfront. Members of the Fire, Police and EMS departments, Sheriff’s Office and Virginia

Task Force 2 will carry a seven-foot long, 700-pound 9/11 Honor Log from 40th Street to 34th

Street on the boardwalk and will commence at the Navy SEAL Memorial at 38th Street. Honor

Bearers will rotate carrying the memorial icon over a four-hour span to honor the sacrifice of

fallen first responders on 9/11.

Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation, in partnership with the Convention & Visitors Bureau will

host an evening to remember, reflect and renew on Sept. 11 at Mount Trashmore Park from

7:30-9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The Virginia Beach History Museums will offer free tours and host a centuries-old artifact.

• Come to the Lynnhaven House Colonial Education Center on

Monday, Sept. 20 for “Conversation with a Curator,” featuring a viewing of the Thelaball

Family Bible, which dates back to 1743. Learn about the history of the Bible, the Thelaball

Family and Lynnhaven House, and what it takes to preserve centuries-old artifacts.

• Visitors will have the opportunity to experience a specially focused

program on the history and stories of the enslaved individuals who lived and worked on the

Thoroughgood House property in the 18th and 19th centuries during Thursday evening tours

on Sept. 23 from 5:30-8 p.m. Tours run every 30 minutes.

• As the daylight gets shorter, experience Thoroughgood House tours after

dark. Tour guides will guide visitors through the grounds and house via lantern, providing an

opportunity to see this historic site in a whole new light. Tours run every 30 minutes from

5:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30.

• Starting as early as 10 p.m. tonight, Sept. 10, VDOT will implement a consecutive, single-lane closure

on I-264 east from the Greenwich Road flyover bridge to Witchduck Road (exit 15), which will be in

place until approximately Sept. 24. This will allow crews to safely work alongside the interstate to

widen I-264 with the extension of the existing collector-distributor lanes from Newtown Road (exit

15) to Witchduck Road (exit 16). Closing one lane of I-264 east in this location leaves four lanes open

to traffic. This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change.

• Beginning as early as 8 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, a portion of Fremac Drive off Laskin Road will be

closed for approximately one week while crews perform utility work. A signed detour will be in place,

directing motorists to utilize Reynard Drive and Winwood Drive to access Laskin Road. Linkhorn

Circle will remain open at all times. This utility work is not expected to directly affect through traffic

on Laskin Road. All work is weather permitting and subject to change.
