Most of the time hearing loss can be contributed to hair cells that are damaged. Once the cells are damaged they are not going to grow back. Researchers are working to help identify some of the genes that are imperative for an individual’s hearing and development. They are also working to identify the potential benefits of gene therapy as a way to help re-grow the lost hair in mammals. The researchers are also working to help investigate a possible way to prevent any hearing loss as a result of noise once the person has been exposed to extreme volumes of noise. Exposure to noise helps to trigger the formation of any molecules that are destructive, which results in the death of the surrounding hair cells. Researchers originally assumed that the antioxidants could help to prevent the loss in hearing if they were given before the individual was exposed to loud noises. However, in one of the recent studies the antioxidants were given to a guinea pig as far as three days after the exposure to noise and there was still a substantial reduction in the amount of hearing loss. These results help to signify that there is an open window of which it is possible to help rescue an individual from the potential damaging effects of being exposed to noise.

Is There Any Research Being Conducted

About Noise Induced Hearing Loss?

Most of the time hearing loss can be contributed

to hair cells that are damaged. Once the cells are

damaged they are not going to grow back.

Researchers are working to help identify some of

the genes that are imperative for an individual’s

hearing and development. They are also working

to identify the potential benefits of gene therapy

as a way to help re-grow the lost hair in

mammals.

The researchers are also working to help investigate a possible

way to prevent any hearing loss as a result of noise once the

person has been exposed to extreme volumes of noise. Exposure

to noise helps to trigger the formation of any molecules that are

destructive, which results in the death of the surrounding hair

cells. Researchers originally assumed that the antioxidants could

help to prevent the loss in hearing if they were given before the

individual was exposed to loud noises.

However, in one of the recent studies the antioxidants were given

to a guinea pig as far as three days after the exposure to noise

and there was still a substantial reduction in the amount of

hearing loss. These results help to signify that there is an open

window of which it is possible to help rescue an individual from

the potential damaging effects of being exposed to noise.

They are now working on testing out a variety of nutrients,

vitamins and minerals to help prevent the potential loss in

hearing for students in college and members of the military.

Eventually they hope to have some more definitive answers on

what we are working with when it comes to hearing loss from

extensive exposure to noise.
