GENUINE LANDSCAPES
The Pyrenees and the Lands of Lleida are synonymous with nature and diversity, offering a visual spectacle of colours, aromas and varied terrain. These unique landscapes are genuine and authentic; they are where the peace and immenseness of the forests are perfectly complemented by the murmur of the rivers and the singing of the birds. The picture-postcard scenery is there to be experienced and enjoyed with all of your senses. From towering peaks in the Pyrenees to flatter areas to the south, from leafy woodlands to arid drylands, many different places form the soul of Lleida. Its landscape has been shaped over millions of years and is full of life and history.
Few places in the world boast such a wide diversity of scenery and ecosystems as the Pyrenees and the Lands of Lleida. Enjoying it, and - above all - cherishing it, is the best way to conserve what is the home of thousands of species and to guarantee that future generations will also be able to feel the magic of the Pyrenees and contemplate the infinite nature of the universe from the heart of El Montsec. This destination is currently being prepared to contribute to sustainability and is working to obtain accreditation as a certified Biosphere Destination and to promote a type of tourism which respects the natural environment.

The Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park is the only natural space in Catalonia that enjoys this status. It straddles the comarques (local districts) of El Pallars Sobirà, El Pallars Jussà, L’Alta Ribagorça and the Val d’Aran.
Its peaks, forests, green meadows, crystal-clear streams and over 200 pools form part of a harmonious area of spectacular beauty that impresses all who visit it. This paradise boasts a tremendous biodiversity and houses over 1,500 different types of vegetation, 150 species of birds and more than 40 different mammals. This beauty also extends to its skies, which explains why the park has recently been recognised as a Starlight Reserve and Starlight Tourist Destination.
All of the itineraries that it offers and its wide range of activities allow visitors to gain a deep knowledge of the natural, scenic, historical and cultural treasures of what is the most important protected natural space in Catalonia.

Although El Montsec is considered the natural boundary between the local districts of the Pyrenees and the Lands of Lleida, that is not its most outstanding feature. This is, perhaps, the quality of its night skies and its lack of light pollution; this has made this ridge the nerve centre of places for observing the heavens.
These attributes have also meant that it has received double certification from the Starlight Foundation, as both a Starlight Tourist Destination and a Starlight Reserve. This official recognition, endorsed by UNESCO, distinguishes the best points from which to observe the stars.
You can stargaze from anywhere at El Montsec, but to observe them well and really get to know them, the best place to go is the Centre for Observing the Universe, which is located just a few kilometres from the medieval village of Àger.

UNESCO WORLD GEOPARK OF THE TREMP BASIN - MONTSEC EVOLUTION FROM ORIGINS
Geopark Association Tremp Basin - Montsec Tel. +34 973 561 088
projectegeoparctrempmontsec.com/en
This territory, located between the Pyrenees and the Lands of Lleida, is one of the most important areas in the world in terms of its geology and palaeontology. Visitors come from far and wide to discover its landscapes, attracted by their geological, cultural, historical and palaeontological value. In 2018, it earned UNESCO recognition as a Geopark.
Entering the Geopark territory is synonymous with embarking upon a journey back to our very origins. Millions of years ago, this was a land inhabited by dinosaurs. Over time, the current landscape was formed and then further modified by the arrival of humans and their exploitation of its resources.
This is a proposal for transversal and sustainable tourism. Visitors can discover a territory whose landscape has been in constant evolution and the emotions that it transmits.

THE VAL D’ARAN, A BIOSPHERE DESTINATION EXPERIENCES OF THE SENSES
Tourism Office of the Val d’AranTel. +34 973 640 110
visitvaldaran.com/en
The Val d’Aran has enjoyed the distinction of being a Biosphere Destination since 2014. It was awarded this recognition due to the importance that it has placed on responsible and sustainable tourism. This was the first mountain destination in Catalonia to receive this certificate, which is awarded by the Institute for Responsible Tourism, an organisation associated with UNESCO.
Its excellent management has made it possible to conserve a unique territory which was isolated from the rest of Spain for centuries, mainly because of its Atlantic orientation. This influences its climatology and has helped to form some exceptional scenery that - in symbiosis with its architectonic heritage - has given it an identity all of its own. This is clearly evident in visits to any of its settlements or tourist locations.

If we take a trip through the local districts of Les Garrigues, La Noguera, El Pla d’Urgell, La Segarra, El Segrià and L’Urgell, we can find 20 different Protected Natural Spaces of outstanding scenic beauty. The great variety of habitats and biodiversity also make this area a unique venue within the wider context of Europe.
Within only a short distance, it is possible to find three, very different, natural habitats: drylands, wetlands and mountains. One good way to discover them is through the Natural Spaces of Western Catalonia project, which organizes activities to discover the local fauna and heritage.

OTHER SPACES OF INTERESTSURPRISING SCENERY
The Congost de Mont-rebei gorge, which forms the frontier between the local districts of El Pallars Jussà and La Noguera, is a spectacular opening in the Montsec ridge that has been carved open, over millions of years, by the River Noguera Ribagorçana. It is impressive to cross either on foot or by water.
Crossing into L’Alt Urgell, the Muntanya d’Alinyà is one of the few places where it is possible to see the griffon vulture, the lammergeier, the black vulture and the Egyptian vulture.
Heading down towards El Solsonès, the Vall de Lord offers one of the most surprising landscapes in all the local districts of Lleida.
At the extreme east of the central Pyrenees, there is a space known as the Tossa Plana de Lles - Puigpedrós, which has tremendous natural wealth and also enormous scenic value, with its many lakes and ancient glaciers.
BOUMORT RIDGETHE HOME OF DEER AND VULTURES
Epicentre - Centre for visitors to the GeoparkTel. +34 973 653 470
pallarsjussa.net/en/boumort
Boumort is one of the most important ridges in the Pre-Pyrenees on account of the beauty of its scenery. Its coniferous forests and broken relief make this a perfect habitat for vultures, lammergeiers and deer, which are some of the most typical species found here. It was designated a National Hunting Reserve in 1991 with the aim of protecting its wildlife and conserving its ecosystems.
There are many activities that can be enjoyed here to discover its biodiversity, history, heritage and scenery. The majority of these are organised by experts who will show visitors some of Boumort’s best-kept secrets.

The agricultural landscapes of the local districts of the south of Lleida are places that are full of life and which reflect the work and love of many generations. They are the breadbasket and vegetable garden of Catalonia, but also of the world. This is where many internationally recognised products originally come from.
Enjoying these food products served on a table is a pleasure, but contemplating the pink of the fruit trees of El Segrià, El Pla d’Urgell and La Noguera in blossom, in spring, is really something else! If we then add to this the white blossom of the almond trees of Les Garrigues, the movement of the green seas of cereals of La Segarra and L’Urgell, and the peace and tranquillity of the olive trees of El Segrià, L’Urgell and Les Garrigues, this becomes an experience that really needs to be seen, lived and smelt.

THE MATING CALL OF THE DEERTHE MAJESTIC SOUND OF NATURE
The braying of the deer is one of the most spectacular and impressive sounds that can be experienced in the forests of the Lleida Pyrenees. In the months of September and October, various guided activities allow visitors to witness this phenomenon without disturbing the deer and interfering with their mating ritual. The Boumort Ridge is probably the best natural space for enjoying this activity, but the High Pyrenees Natural Park, the El Cadí - Moixeró Natural Park and the Val d’Aran are other possible locations.

BIRD WATCHING LLEIDA, A BIRD-WATCHING DESTINATION
Few places in the world have such a variety of landscapes, ecosystems and biodiversity as the Pyrenees and the Lands of Lleida. This extensive range is evident from the territory’s different protected natural spaces, where it is easy to enjoy the pleasures of ornithology. This explains why this has become a must-visit destination for ornithologists from all over the world.
In the drylands of the south of Lleida, it is possible to observe unique species of steppe birds; at humid locations, between its rivers and marshes, there are numerous aquatic birds; while in the mountains of the Pyrenees, the predominant species are birds of prey and carrion eaters.

THE LEGACY OF THE PAST
Lleida is synonymous with identity, art, history and customs; in short, with culture. Visiting Lleida, is like embarking on a journey into the past: a past that has left its mark on the character of its people, on its traditions and festivities, on its historical and architectural heritage, and on the quality of its products and its gastronomy. This is a past that is here in the present, and will remain in the future; it is a past which has been recovered and transformed so that it can be shared over the generations.
Lleida’s heritage has not ceased to grow over millions of years and is clearly visible in every corner of the Pyrenees and the Lands of Lleida. These resources have kept the people of Lleida in contact with their roots and have helped them to remember who they are and where they came from. Visiting hermitages, museums and cathedrals is a way to find answers from the past and make new discoveries through each brush-stroke, legend and engraving.

THE ROMANESQUE ART AND ARCHITECTURE OF THE VALL DE BOÍART AND ARCHITECTURE IN THE MIDDLE OF NATURE
9 churches
Romanesque Centre of the Vall de BoíTel. +34 973 696 715
centreromanic.com/en
This peaceful valley houses eight churches and a hermitage that were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Each of them reflects the development of the Romanesque art and architecture of the 11th and 12th centuries and together they form an exceptional heritage group, the like of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
The church of Sant Climent de Taüll, with its slender bell-tower, is the most representative of all of these elements. Thanks to the “mapping” technique, visitors can now enjoy its original appearance through a spectacular reproduction of its original decoration, including a painting of Christ the Almighty, an icon of Catalan Romanesque-style art and architecture.

FIRE FESTIVALS OF THE PYRENEESTHE RITUAL OF WELCOMING THE ARRIVAL OF SUMMER
Popularly known as “Falles”, the Fire Festivals of the Pyrenees are a festive manifestation whose origins date back to ancestral times and include pagan rituals that were subsequently Christianised. The festivities bear witness to a fusion of beliefs, traditions and rituals that UNESCO declared part of Human Heritage in 2015.The fire show begins high in the mountains, from where columns of “falla”-bearers gradually descend to the village, with their torches in flames, creating a zig-zag of light on the horizon. This is the most significant festival held in the Pyrenees in the months of June and July and it is celebrated in 17 different villages.

KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNIQUESOF THE ART OF BUILDING DRY-STONE WALLS
16 remains The Rock Art of the Roca dels MorosTel. +34 672 445 990
patrimoni.gencat.cat/en/coleccio/art-rupes-tre-de-larc-mediterrani
From the end of the 18th century until the beginning of the 20th century, the local districts in the south of Lleida were filled with constructions built to provide shelter. One clear example of this are the vaulted shelters that facilitated the organisation of work carried out in the countryside. Other buildings were also constructed to help manage the little water that was available on the drylands of the plain. This careful stonework, which was mainly related to the cultivation of olives, stands as living testimony to the respect that local farmers had for their environment. It has now been recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humankind.
ROCK ARTHISTORICAL REMAINS
The local districts of the Pyrenees and the Lands of Lleida contain 16 sites which have been recognised as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. They all form part of a wider group that includes all of the rock art in the Mediterranean arc of the Iberian Peninsula.
Located in shallow caves, these paintings represent early human society, its relationship with the environment, its ties with nature and its beliefs. They show how humans adapted to the territory in which they lived between the years 6000 and 1000 BCE.
The Roca dels Moros of El Cogul is the best known of these first artistic representations.

THE SEU VELLA HILLOF LLEIDATHE MONUMENTAL GROUP PAR EXCELLENCE
Consortium of the Seu Vella HillTel. +34 973 230 653
turoseuvella.cat/en
This is one of the best monumental groups in Catalonia and a candidate to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Seu Vella fascinates the people of Lleida, and everyone who visits it, with its exquisite sculpture work, its high bell-tower and a gigantic cloister that is considered to be one of the largest in European Gothic architecture.
Next to it stands the Castle of the King, or La Suda, which was the official residence of the monarchs of the Crown of Aragon when they visited the city. This is a magnificent vantagepoint from which to look out over the Pyrenees and the Lands of Lleida.
The whole group is surrounded by the imposing military fortifications of the modern and contemporary periods, which add to its monumental status.
A visit implies a fascinating journey of discovery into the history of Lleida, Catalonia and Europe’s medieval architecture.

Of all the Catalan cathedrals, that of La Seu d’Urgell is the only one that completely conserves its original Romanesque building, which dates back to the 12th century. From outside, it is easy to note its tremendous solemnity, which was influenced by its Lombard Romanesque origins, and also its large dimensions, the combination of brown and reddish colours on its walls, and the sculptural decoration on its main façade.
Inside this temple, the great height of its central nave invites us to enter and explore. This sensation is magnified by the powerful transept and the building’s numerous apses. The whole cloister, where it is possible to see 50 capitals ornamented with vegetal elements, people and beasts from popular folklore, is nothing short of majestic.
MONASTERY OF SANTA MARIADE VALLBONA DE LES MONGESTHE PERFECTION OF SIMPLICITY
This is the most important female Cistercian monastery in Catalonia and forms part of the Cistercian Route, together with the monasteries of Santes Creus and Poblet. The simplicity of Cistercian art, which has been attributed to the influence of Sant Benet, seems to be relegated to the background when we observe the beauty of this building’s architecture.
Constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries, this monastery is one of the best examples of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic style; these two styles coexist in perfect harmony in both the church and the cloister.

BAROQUE LLEIDA THE PERFECTION OF STYLE
The territory of Lleida contains the most important representation of Baroque architecture and sculpture in Catalonia. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the austere Romanesque churches were replaced by temples with rich, sculptural ornamentation; this was meant to impress the faithful at a time of spiritual crisis. The spectacular nature of this style can be found in many churches, but it is particularly worth highlighting those in the local district of El Solsonès, where this type of architecture is accompanied by some of the best conserved altarpieces in Catalonia.

From around the year 1000, and until the final conquest of the city of Lleida, in 1149, the border between the Christian and Muslim worlds gradually moved from the Pyrenees to the Lleida Plain. As this occurred, hundreds of castles and fortresses were constructed. A thousand years later, the demarcation of Lleida is one of the parts of Catalonia that has most, and best, conserved this type of defensive construction. Their walls have witnessed the most important events in Lleida’s municipal history and, as a result, they can reveal much about its history and help chart the evolution of its landscape.

EMERGING HISTORYRECOVERED HERITAGE
Museum Network of the Lands of Lleida and AranTel. +34 973 482 003
patrimoni.gencat.cat/museusdelleida
Until not long ago, all of those who had walked through this territory and the evidence of their visits still remained beneath the ground. From the Lands of Lleida to the Pyrenees, there are a number of palaeontological sites and museums that show us how the last dinosaurs to inhabit Europe used to live.
Millions of years later, the passage of man through this territory is visible through archaeological remains, through which it is possible to learn a lot about how the prehistoric, Iberian, Roman, Muslim and Christian cultures lived (in the case of the latter, from the medieval period until virtually the modern day).
This is a fascinating journey over millions of years that combines landscape, history and heritage.
Amongst other interesting remains, it is particularly relevant to highlight the palaeontological sites of Coll de Nargó, Isona and Conca Dellà, and the Iberian fortress of Els Vilars of Arbeca, some of which are unique in Europe in terms of their characteristics.
MUSEUMS AND INTERPRETATION SPACESTHE BEST-TOLD HISTORY
Can you imagine a museum with a total area of over 12,000 km²? This is what visitors will find in Lleida. It is the total space shared between the 11 museums that form part of the Museum Network of the Lands of Lleida and Aran and the other interpretative facilities that complement the museum offer in this territory.
Museums, Centres of Interpretation, local collections and art galleries, all invite you to discover the history, heritage, people, traditions and landscapes of Lleida.
These are 21st century facilities where it is possible to observe, listen, feel, touch and get to know more about the past and they should form the backbone of any visit.

TREASURES OF THE VAL D’ARANA PAST TO DISCOVER
The artistic wealth of the Val d’Aran is one of the best-guarded treasures of the Pyrenees. This local district is a faithful advocate of its own uses, customs and language: Aranese, which is a variant of the Gascon language and belongs to the Occitan family. Culture, tradition and modernity are all mixed together in this Pyrenean valley that looks to the north but whose main connections lie to the south. It has a natural landscape which has been moulded by the influence of prehistoric, Roman and, later, Christian cultures. This has turned the Val d’Aran into a veritable museum of art and history; one that can particularly be enjoyed via the Romanesque Route of Aran.

The convent of Sant Bartomeu of Bellpuig is the best example of Renaissance art and architecture in Lleida. In this village in L’Urgell, it is also possible to find a great Renaissance-style mausoleum, which is housed in what is now the church of Sant Nicolau.
The rural essence of this territory can be seen in the Art Nouveau-style buildings of many of its villages, towns and cities: wineries, cooperatives, agricultural unions, flour factories, slaughterhouses, mills, and domestic residences are the most representative elements built in this style and found in the local districts of Lleida.
To help remember the period between the Spanish Civil War and the return to democracy - late in the 20th century – visitors will find an extensive network of historical memory sites in this territory, complete with signposted routes and interpretation spaces.

A TASTE OF THE TERRITORY
The gastronomy of Lleida is an example of good Mediterranean cuisine and pays tribute to the local territory, its products and its culinary skills.
It includes the best meats and cured sausages, such as beef and girella (cured lamb), obtained from the herds of cows and sheep that graze on the meadows and mountains of the Pyrenees, roaming free through woodlands full of mushrooms.
These animals also give us dairy products such as milk, butter and a wide range of excellent cheeses. They are raised in a territory sculpted by rivers of life, from which salt has been extracted for centuries. These rivers also irrigate fields of potatoes and produce the unique Nacarii caviar, in the River Garonne.
The local districts of the Lleida Plain, with its mosaic of irrigated crop fields and dryland farming, produce some of the best products in the world. Their sweet, stone and seed fruit is exported to all latitudes, as are their olive oil and wine, which have internationally recognized denominations of origin. This land, with its fields of cereals and almond trees, is the breadbasket of Catalonia. It also produces such sweet products as almond nougat and honey. And we must not forget its coca de recapte (a type of savoury pizza), cassola de tros (rural paella) or iconic snails.
These are flavours, aromas and textures which, thanks to the work of local producers, restaurateurs, schools and chefs, have made the gastronomy of Lleida a cuisine with an identity all of its own identity, which you are now invited to come and savour.

OLIVE OIL TOURISMTHE LIQUID GOLD OF THE LANDS OF WESTERN CATALONIA
The olive landscapes of Les Garrigues, the south of El Segrià and L’Urgell are the most unique in the local districts of Lleida. The image of thousands of olive trees standing amongst dry-stone constructions and of villages where it seems that time has stood still, is commonly associated with olive oil: the liquid gold of the drylands. This product, which is produced by century-old rural cooperatives, mostly belongs to the Protected Denomination of Origin of Les Garrigues and is considered one of the best in the world.
Discovering its production process, and the landscape and heritage that surround it, is now easy thanks to all the activities that are organized and which will allow you to enter the exciting world of olive oil culture. Take a trip to discover the authenticity, quality and honesty of this product and of this territory and its people.
WINE TOURISMAN EXPERIENCE FOR ALL OF THE SENSES
Costers del Segre is the Denomination of Origin that encompasses all the wineries of the Pyrenees and the Lands of Lleida. This is a large and very diverse territory, like its landscapes, and produces a wide variety of high-quality wines. Now, 80% of the production forms part of what is a pioneering programme at the national level and which seeks to promote sustainable vine cultivation combined with good social, environmental and economic practices.
The Lleida Wine Route links all this diversity together around a central thread which includes heritage, landscapes and gastronomy. This has helped to create a tourist offer that promotes the value of the local territory. It offers visitors a great sensory experience and gives them a tremendous insight into the world of wine, revealing the relationship between its production, history and heritage and the local population.costersdelsegre.esrutadelvidelleida.cat
