o. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard ( Second Revision) was adopted by the IndianStandards Institution on 29 June 1985, after the draft finalized by the FireFighting Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil EngineeringDivision Council.

0.2 The purpose of blower and exhauster is to provide the supply of freshclean air to firemen who may be working in unventilated places or to ex­haust accumulation of foul air, fumes and smoke from storage tanb, ships'hold., godowns, living rooms and the like.

0;' This standard was first published in 1958 based on the type of equip­ment being imported from other countries, The fint revision had beenprepared to have the requirements based on the experience gained in themanufacture of this equipment in the country. This rev ision has been pre­pared so as to keep the design based on performance.

0.'- For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, exprea­ing the result of a test or analyail, shall be rounded off in accordance withIS :2 • 1960·. The number of significant places retained in the round­ed off value should be the same as that of the specified value in thisstandard.

I. SCOPE1.1 This standard laya down the requirements regarding material, cons­truction and performance of blower and exhauster used for fire fighting.

2. DESCRIPTION2.1 The blower and exhauster shall consist of the following parts:

a) Impeller,b) Casing,

3. MATERIAL

3.1 The material used for the various parts shall be as given in Table 1.

4. CONSTRUCTION".1 Impeller and engine shall be mounted together and the total weight ofthe unit with fuel shall Dot exceed 60 kg. Runner shall be of the overhungtype to mount correctly and securely on the extension of the engine ahaft.The detail. shall be as given in Fig. 1.

5.1 The blower shall be tested accordingly to method given in 5.1.1to 5.1.3, after removing the guard. The blower shall be capable ofdischarging safely and continuously 30 m3/minute of free air.

5.1.1 To the inlet side of the blower attach a cylindrical airway of dia­meter D not less than 1·5d where d is the diameter oforifice in which theimpeller rotates (I" Fig. 2A ). To the inlet aide of the airway shall befitted a conical mouthpiece of length D/4 having an included angle of 60degrees converging towards the blower, and a radial flange at itl inlet endof width D/25. The total length of the test duct including the conical mouth.piece shall not be less than 2D.

5.1.2 The average air velocity shall be determined by readings of a vaneanemometer from measurements across a section D from the fan end of thecylindrical airway.

5.1.3 For the air delivery teat, the cylindrical airway shall be consideredto be divided into a number of equal square areas by lines parallel to thediameter D as shown in Fig. 2B. Measurements shall be taken with thecentre of the anemometer vane wheel at the centre of each area, as shownin the Fig. 2B. The number of areasshall be determined by the ratio ofD to the diameter of the ring iurrounding the anemometer vanes, the rela­tionship being shown in the table under Fig. 2B.

6. OPERATIONAL TEST6.1 Blower and exhauster shall be run continuously tor 2 hours It shallremain stable and ahall not move from its place by more than 30 em, Allthe components shall be checked and there ahall not be any looseDell.

7. ftNlSB7.1 All parts shall be of good finish, clear of burrs and sharp edges. Allcasting shall be clean and sound and shall be free from plugging, weldingor repair of any defects.

8. PAINTING8.1 Blower and exhauster except engine shall have two coats of paint afterone coat of red oxide primer. The shade of paint for stand shall be blackfor body, fire red conforming to Shade No. 536 of IS : 5 • 1978·. Paintused shall be in accordance with IS : 2932.1974t·

9. MARKING

9.1 Each blower and exhauster shall be clearly and permanently markedwith the following information:

a) Manufacturer's name or trade-mark, and

b) Year of manufacture.

9.1.1 The product may also be marked with Standard R18rk.

9.1.2 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of theBureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and tbe Rules and Regulations madethereunder. The details of conditions under which the licence for the use ofStandard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtainedfrom tbe Bureau of Indian Standards.

10. CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY

10.1 Each equipment shall be checked for the requirements given in thisstandard.
