This Indian Standard which is identical with IS0 3660 : 1976 ‘Fishing nets - Mounting and joining of netting - Terms and illustrations’, issued by the International Organization for Standardization ( IS0 ) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Textile Materials for Marine/Fishing Purposes Sectional Committee and approval of the Textile Division Council.
Only the English language text in the international standard has been retained while adopting it in this Indian Standard.
Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear, referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.

SECTION ONE : MOUNTING OF NETTING
1 DEFINITIONS
1.1 mounting : The fixing of meshes individually or rn groups by means of either a mounting yarn (see 1.4) or
special yarns on to a rope (see 1.2) or a frame (see 1.3). for
the purpose of hanging (see IS0 1531).

frame : A trame of a suitable material and convenient on which the netting IS fixed.

2 METHODS OF MOUNTING NETTING
2.1 Netting with straight edges (AK IAN or ATI or AB
cuts)
2.1 .l Mounting of diamond-shaped meshes
TYPE OF MOUNTING
a) Fixed mounting
Each mesh is fixed directly on to the rope or frame by
means of a mounting yarn (see 1 and 2).

b) Loose mounting
The meshes are strung freely on to the mounting yarn,
rope, or frame. The mounting yarn is fixed to the rope or
frame and thus determines the grouping of the meshes (see
3 to 7).
(Mounting 6 is for use with small meshes.)

c! Mixed mounting
Certain meshes are attached at given intervals to the rope or frame by the mounting yarn, the others being attached loosely to the rope or frame (see 8 to 10).
This method is a combination of methods 1 and 3.

d) Mounting using special yarns (Norse1 mounting)
The meshes are mounted at fixed intervals by special short lines (norsels) of appropriate length, either directly or bv means of a mounting yarn to which the meshes can be attached (see 11 to 14).

2.1.2 Mounting of square and fly meshes
TYPE of MOUNTING
a) Loose mounting
Each mesh (either square or fly mesh) IS secured loosely to the rope or frame at the required distance by means of a mounting yarn tied to the rope or frame (see 15 and 16).

The meshes are fixed to the rope or frame by the mounting yarn at the-cuts (see 19).

3 DEFINITIONS
3.1 joining of netting : The process of connecting, by means of a thread, the edges of nettrng panels which can
differ in the number of meshes, mesh size and types of cut.
NOTE - Before 101n1ng two netter-g panels of AT cut, the edge IS often reinforced by another thread. This process is called “selvedglng”
b) Fixed mounting
ar sewing : The formation, using a thread, of a row of knotted half-meshes or of loops loosely placed through the
meshes at the edge of the net. The thread can, in this second case, be fastened at given intervals.
Each sctuare mesh is fixed directly to the rope or frame by the mounting yarn (see 17).
b) seaming (lacing) : The fastemng, by means of a thread, of one or more meshes at the edge of each panel without
involvihg the formation of a row of half-meshes. The thread
is knotted at every mesh or at given intervals.
4 METHODS OF JOINING NETTING
4.1 Sewing

5 INDICATION OF THE JOINING FtATlO (TAKE-UP)
For the joining of different panels, the ratio of the number of meshes on one panel’s edge to the number on the other panel’s edge is indicated as a fraction.
Examples
1) ; means that, each time, 8 meshes of the first panel
should be joined to 11 meshes of the second panel.
If, instead of the number of meshes, one wishes to refer to the extended length of each panel, the unit of length (generally the metre) should be shown in the joining ratio.

2’ 3m means that, each time, 2 m of the first panel
should be joined to 3 m of the second panel.

Standard Mark
The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The Standard Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and ~operated by the producer. Standard marked products are also continuously checked by BIS for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
