FIRE BRIGADE USE

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 12 November 1984, after the draft finalized by the Fire Fighting Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil Engineering Division Council.

0.2 Conventional suction wrenches used by the fire services are often of unsuitable size or shape or both resulting in damage to lugs on suction hose couplings, making the couplings unserviceable. It is, therefore, necessary to rationalize the sizes and shape of such wrenches so that damage to suction hose couplings may be prevented. This standard has been formulated so as to give guidance in regard to the manufacture of this item.

0.3 This standard was first published in 1968 covering conventional and universal type of suction wrenches. In this revision, besides updating requirements in respect of requirements of materials, the specifications are now being covered for the conventional type of wrenches.

0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accord- ance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard lays down the requirements regarding materials and dimensions of conventional type of suction wrenches used by fire services. ___. ___~ .._

2. MATERIAL

2.1 Mild steel *bar used for making the wrench shall conform to IS : 226-1975*.

3. SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS

3.1 There shall be four different sizes of suction wrenches, the dimensions of which are given in Table 1 read with Fig. 1.

4. WORKMANSHIP

4.1 The wrenches shall be free from burrs at sharp edges and shall be filled and smoothened.

5. MARKING

5.1 Suction wrenches shall be clearly and permanently marked with the following information:

a) Manufacturer’s name or trade-mark, and

b) Size and reference of coupling for which it is suitable.

5.1.1 The suction wrenches may also be marked with the IS1 Certification Mark.

NOTE - The use of the IS1 Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the Indian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks ) Act and the Rules and Regu- lations made thereunder. The IS1 Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the require- ments of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by IS1 and operated by the producer. IS1 marked products are also continuously checked by IS1 for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions, under which a licence for the use of the IS1 Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.
