    FOREWORD(Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards onthe draft finalized by the Electrical Insulators and Accessories SectionalCommittee had been approved by the Electrotechnical Division Council.

    This Indian Standard22 August 1989, after

    The insulator fittings for overhead power lines are generally the insulator pins, ball and socketconnections, clevis and tongue connections, cross arm straps, etc. The dimensions of such fittingshave been covered in this standard.This standard was first issued in 1963. The first revision was_ carried out in 1974 to includedimensions of one more size of ball and socket connections. .The requirements and dimensions ofsecurity clips were covered separately in Part 3 and Part 4 of IS 2486. In this second revision, therecommended dimensions of insulator string fittings rated above 725 kV have been included fromIS 10136 : 1982 so as to bring information at one place.The Sectional Committee responsible for the preparation of this standard is of the view that the listof fittings for which the dimensions have been given is by no means exhaustive and it would benecessary to add to it as and when the need arises.The general requirements, materials and tests for these metal fittings are covered in IS 2486(Part 1) : 1971. The requirements of locking devices for these metal fittings are covered inIS 2486 (Part 3) : 1974 and IS 2486 ( Part 4) : 1981.The insulators for which these fittings are meant are covered in IS 731 : 1971 and IS 3188 : 1980.The insulator fittings for overhead distribution lines up to 1 000 V are covered in IS 7935 : 1975.In the preparation of this standard considerable assistance has been deri\,ed from the followingpublications:

    For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with thefinal value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test. shall be rounded off in accordancewith IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical valves (rev;.&). The number of significantplaces retained in the rounded off value should be the.sa-me as that of the specified value in thisstandard.

    PART 2 DIMENSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    ( Second Revision )1. SCOPE 5 INSULATOR FITTINGS FOR PIN INSU-LATORS AND STRING INSULATOR UNITS1.1 This standard (Part 2 ) gives the dimensionsof the insulator fittings and their associated gaugesfor use on overhead power lines with a nominalvoltage greater than 1 000 V.

    5.1 The requirements relating to shape anddimensions of fittings specified in 6, 7 and 8 shallbe complied to achieve interchangeability ofinsulator fitting.2 REFERENCE STANDARDS2.1 The Indian Standards listed in Anntx A arenecessary adjuncts to this standard.

    6 INSULATOR PINS6.1 Line and Pilot Pins6.1.1 Heads

    3 TERMINOLOGY3.1 For the purpose of this standard, the defini-tions given in IS 1885 (Part 54) : 1980 andIS 2486 (Part 1) : 1971 shall apply.

    The heads shall be of steel and shall be inaccordance with Fig. 1. They shall screw into athimble or equivalent component fixed in the pinhole of the insulator. The dimensions of the gaugesfor these heads are given in Fig. 2 to 4.

    4 MATERIALS AND REQUIREMENTS 6.1.2 Pins4.1 1Jnless specified otherwise, the materials ofmetal parts of insulator shall be as specified inIS 2486 (Part 1) : 1971.

    The dimensions of the line pins shall be as givenin Fig. 5 and 6. The pilot pins shall have thedimensions according to Fig. 7.

    NOTE -The reduction in the minimum mechanicalfailing load spccificd above for lins pins is undclconsideration. The mechanical failing load may bcreduced to suit the specific requirements as agreedbetween the manufacturer and the user till such timethe revised values are finalized.

    6.1.2.1 StaIksThe stalk length of line pins (dimension A inFig. 5 and 6 ) shall be measured above theseating face of the collar. In pilot pins (Jee Fig.7), this length shall be measured above thebottom face of the top nut.6.1.2.2 ShanksThe shank length of the line pins (dimension Ain Fig. 5 and- 6) shall be measured below theseating face of the collar. In pilot pins (seeFig. 7 ), this length shall be measured below thebottom face of the top nut.The effective thread of 50 mm shank, hall benot less than 45 mm and that of a 150 mm shank,not less than 100 mm. The term effective threadshall mean that the thread, after galvanizing orafter being given any other suitable anti-corrosionprotection, shall take a nut for the distance stated.NOTE. On steel cross-arms, the pins are securedwith spring washer artd nut and on wooden cross-armswith plain washer, nut and lock-nut.

    6.1.2.3 TlveatlsThe threads on the shank and the nut shall be asspecified in IS 4218 ( Part 2 ) : 1976.6.1.2.4 NutsThe dimensions of hexagonal nuts shall bein accordance with IS 1363 ( Part 3 ) : 1986.6.2 Stud PinsThe shank of the stud pin shall have a diameterof 20 mm and the lengths of 50 or 150 mm. Thelength shall be measured below the seating surface

    7 STRING INSULATOR FITTINGS7.1 Ball and Socket Connections7.1.1 The nominal dimensions of the 11, 16, 20and 24 mm pin ball and socket interior shall beas shown in Fig. 8 and 9.

    NOTE -The cxtel-nal dimensions of the sockethou\;ng have not been specified, and these are left tothe manufacturer. Conformity to the hook-on 'GO'gauges (see Fig. 10) ensures that the socket housingfrom one rranufacturer will cot foul any part of aninsulator supplied by another.

    7.1.2 The gauges for pin ball and sockets shallconform to the figure numbers given in Table 1.

    1 The Go gauges have an allowance for wear and manufacturing tolerance for the gauge which falls withinthe tolerance zone for the part. If desired, the manufacturing tolerance for the gauge may be measured andthe wear allowance correspondingly reduced. The gauges should be discarded when they have worn to thedimensions given for worn gauges.2 The Not Go gauges have a manufactufing tolerance symmetrically disposed about the tolerance limit forthe part and have no wear allowance.
