This Indian Standard ( Part 1 ) which is identical with ISO 3834-1 : 1994 ‘Quality requirements forwelding — Fusion welding of metallic materials — Part 1 : Guidelines for selection and use’ issued bythe International Organization for Standardization ( ISO ) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standardson the recommendations of the Welding Applications Sectional Committee and approval of the MetallurgicalEngineering Division Council.
In this adopted standard, some terminology and conventions are, however, not identical to those usedin Indian Standards. Attention is especially drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should beread as ‘Indian Standard’.
b) Comma ( , ) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practiceis to use a point ( . ) as the decimal marker.
In this adopted standard, reference appears to certain International Standards for which Indian Standardsalso exist. The corresponding Indian Standards which are to be substituted in their place are listedbelow along with their degree of equivalence for the editions indicated:

3 Definitions
For the purposes of this part of ISO 3834, the defi-nitions given in ISO 8402 and the following definitionsapply.
3.1 contract
(1) Agreed requirements for constructions orderedby a customer.
(2) Manufacturer’s basic specification for con-structions manufactured in series for several custom-ers, unknown to the manufacturer at the time ofdesign and production.

3.2 special process: Process, the results of whichcannot be fully verified by subsequent inspection andtesting of the product and where, for example, pro-cessing deficiencies may become apparent only afterthe product is in use. Accordingly, continuous moni-toring and/or compliance with documented pro-cedures is required to ensure that the specifiedrequirements are met [adapted from ISO 9001:1994,subclause 4.9 and ISO 9002:1994, subclause 4.9].

4 Selection of welding qualityrequirements
Welding quality requirements may be selected to suitthe type of welded construction concerned in accord-ance with table 1. Annex A and annex B also givefurther information on the selection and content ofISO 3834-2, ISO 3834-3 and ISO 3834-4.
