FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Hospital Equipment Sectional Committee had been approved by the Medical Equipment and Hospital Planning Division Council.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test oranalysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)‘. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

4.2 Capacity

The capacity of the machine shall be about 100 kg potato per hour or 4 to 5 kg per charge.

5 MATERIAL

5.1 Various components of the potato peeling machine, namely main body, top lid, stand and chute shall be made from stainless steel conform- ing to designation 04Crl8NilO of IS 6911 : 1972 0ralumini;m conforming to IS 20

6 CONSTRUCTION

6.1 Main Body

Main body shall be either of aluminium casting or fabricated from stainless steel sheet. It shall be constructed in cylindrical shape with flat, rounded or hemispherical. bottom. A removable lid with recess is provided on top of the main body and a chute on side of it, with a latch for locking the machine while in operation. In case of flat bottom, the ends shall be rounded off.

6.2 Lid

The lid shall be sloping towards the centre and shall have a collar all round the outer edge to facilitate loading and to prevent potatoes from falling out while loading.

6.3 Chute

A chute of sufficient size is provided on the side of the main housing for easy removal of peeled potatoes without any obstruction.

6.4 Abrasive Disc

An abrasive disc of appropriate design shall be fitted inside the main body. The design of the disc shall be such that while rotating, the full surface area of potato shall be evenly rubbed on the disc for removal of the skin. Generally silicon powder with 16 grit is recommended. Abrasive powder shall be bonded with proper binding compound for long life. The side of the main

body shall also be coated with abrasive powder for better efficiency. It shall be easily removable for routine maintenance.

6.5 Drive for Abrasive Disc

A single or three phase induction motor with rating 0’37 kw, 50 Hz and 1 440 rpm conforming to IS 996 : 1976 and IS 325 : 1978, respectively is recommended for the capacity specified in 4.2. The disc shall be driven with motor directly driving through ‘V’ belt or through gear mechanism.

6.6 Water Inlet

Water inlet connection shall be provided to the machine.

6.7 Water Drain

Provision shall be made for draining of water alongwith peeled potato skins. The drain shall be large enough to prevent any chance of its being clogged with waste potato skin.

7 INSTRUCTION MANUAL

7.1 An instruction manual shalt be provided with each machine indicati’ng the details of operation and maintenance of the machine.

8 MARKING

8.1 A label shall be affixed to each machine indicating the following information:

a) Indication of the source of manufacture,

b) Capacity of the machine.

c) ‘Mains operated’ 220 V ac, single phase 50 cycles supply, and

d) Rating of the motor.

9 PACKING

9.1 The packing shall be as agreed to between the manufacturer and the purchaser.

I Standard Mark

The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provtstons of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The Standard Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the producer.
