FOREWORD
This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 28 February 1990,after the draft finalized by the Sugar Industry Sectional Committee had been approved by theFood and Agriculture Division Council.
BURA is the product made by recrystallization of any kind of sugar or KHA.NDSARI sugar andmade into fine free flowing powder. BURA is being produced in a considerable quantity in thecountry. :.+'"
In the preparation of this standard, due consideration has been given to the relevant Rulesprescribed by the Government of India, under P"v,nt;on ofFood A.dulteration Act, 1954 and Standardsof W,;ghts and Measures ( Packaged Commoditi,s) Rules, 1977. The standard is, however, subject to therestrictions imposed under these, wherever applicable.
For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with,the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of test or analysis, shall be roundedoff in accordance with 18 2 : 1960 'Rules for rounding off numerical values ("vised)'. Thenumber of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of thespecified value in this standard.

1 SCOPE
1.1 This standard prescribes the requirementsand methods of test for BURA manufactured byany kind of sugar.

6 TESTS
6.1 Tests shall be carried out in accordancewith the methods prescribed in col 5 of Table 1.
6.2 Q,uality orReagents
Unless specified otherwise, pure chemicals shallbe employed in tests and distilled water (see IS1070: 1977) shall be used where the use of wateras a reagent is intended.
NOTE - 'Pure chemicals' shall mean chemicals that donot contain irnpurit ies which affect the result of analysis.
7 PACKING AND MARKING
7.1 Packing
3.1 There shall be two types of BURA, namely,white BURA and pale yellow BlJRA.
4 REQ,UIREMENTS
4.1 Description
BURA shall be prepared by recrystallization ofany kind of sugar and shall be in the form offree flowing amorphous powder.
4.2 Colour
White BURA shall be white in colour while paleyellow B UJ~A shall be pale yellow in colour.
4.3 BURA shall be sweet to taste and shall notpossess sour salty or any other objectionabletaste.
4.4 The material shall be free from otherextraneous matter and substances deleterious to
The material shall be packed in clean, soundand new jute or polyethylene bags. The jutebags may be lined with polyethylene film forbetter keeping quality. The mouth of eachbag may be either machine stitched or' rolledover and hand stitched.
7.1.1 The material shall be packed In a netquantity of 50 kg.
7.2 Marking
Each bag shall be stuitably marked so as to givethe following information:
a) Name of the material,
b) Indication of the source of manufacture,
c) Net mass in the bag, and
d) Type of BURA.

The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian StandardsAct, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The Standard Mark on productscovered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply withthe requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection, testing and qualitycontrol which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the producer.
