0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by theBureau of Indian Standards on 28 October1987, after the draft finalized by the Cementand Concrete Sectional Committee had beenapproved by the Civil Engineering DivisionOouncil.

0.2 For certain specialized works, such as,prestressed concrete and certain items of pre-cast concrete requiring consistently highstrength concrete, the concrete industry quiteoften needs a special type of ordinary Portlandcement having the compressive strength muchhigher than the minimum compressive strengthlimits specified in IS: 269. 1976* andIS: 8112.1976t. In the context of presentstrength limits specified in IS : 2691~76 andIS: 8\ '2 -. 1976t. the consumer has been nor-mally finding it difficult to get consistent andensured supply of high strength cement. Ithas, therefore, been felt that unless there is aseparate specification covering a cement hav-.ing compressive strength values much abovethe existing strength values in IS: 269 1976-and IS : 8112 .. 1976t, there are likely to bequality control difficulties for productionof very high strength concrete, sincewithin the ambit of IS : 269 - 1976* andIS: 8112 - 1976t, it will be very difficult to

. obtain a cernen t having guaranteed strengthmuch above the minimum values specified inthese standards .. The Cement and ConcreteSectional Committee has, therefore, consideredit necessary to bring out a separate specifica-tion for 53 grade ordinary Portland cement,

5.3 Setting Time - The setting time ofcement, when tested by the Vicat apparatusmethod described in IS : 40311968- shall con-form to the following requirements:

a) Initial setting time in minutes - notless than 30, and

b) Final setting time in minutes - notmore than 600.

5.3.1 If cement exhibits false set, the ratioof final penetration measured after 5 minutes ofcompletion of mixing period to the initialpenetration measured exactly after 20 secondsof completion of mixing period, expressed as

MANUFACTURER'S CERTIFICATE7.1 The manufacturer shall satisfy himselfthat the cement conforms to the requirementsof this standard, and if requested, shall furnisha certificate to this effect to the purchaser or

8. DELIVERY8.1 The cement shall be packed in bags [ jutesacking bag conforming' to 1S : 25801982*,double hessian bituminized ( CRt type ), mul-tiply paper conforming to IS: 11761.1986t,polyethylene lined (CRI type) jute, light-weight ( CRI type) jute, woven HOPE con-forming to IS : 11652-' 986t, woven polypropy-lene conforming to IS: 11653.1986 or any otherapproved composite bags ] bearing the manu-facturer's name or his registered trade-mark,if any, and the words' '53 Grade OrdinaryPortland Cement'. The number of bags ( netmass) to the tonne or the nominal averagenet mass ( se 8.2 ) of the cement shall belegibly and indelibly marked on each bag.Bags shall be in good condition at the time ofinspection.

8.J.I Similar information shall be providedin the delivery advices accompanying theshipment of packed or bulk ( see 8.3 ) cement.

8.1.2 The bags or packages may also bemarked with the Standard Mark.

NO'fB - The use of the Standard Mark isgoverned by the provisions of the Bureau of JndianStandards Act J98&. and tbe Rules and Regulationsmade thereunder. The Standard Mark on productscovered by an Indian Standard coveys the assurancethat they have been produced to comply with therequiremen tl, of that standard under a well-definedsystem of Inspection, testing and quality controlwhich is devised and supervised by B1S and operatedby tbe producer. Standard marked products arealso continuously checked by BIS for conformityto that standard al a further safeguard. 8.2 The average net mass of cement per bagshall be 50 kg ( S~t also Appendix A ).8.3 Supplies of cement in bulk may be madeby arrangement between the purchaser andthe supplier ( manufacturer or stockist ).9. 9.1.1 The samples shall be taken withinthree weeks of the delivery arid all the testsshan be commenced within one week ofsampling.

9.1.2 When it is not possible to test thesamples within one week, the samples shall bepacked and stored in air-tight containers tillsuch time as they are tested.9.2 In addition to the requirements of 9.1,the methods and procedure of sampling shaJlbe in accordance with IS : 3535- \986.9.3 Facilities for ~.mpliDIaDd IdeatiSca-dOD' - The manufacturer or supplier shallafford every facility, and shall provide alllabour and materials for taking and packingthe samples for testing the cement and for sub.sequent-identification of the cement sampled.JO. TESTS10.1 The samples of cement for t~st shall betaken as described in9 and shall be tested inthe manner described in the relevant clauses.10.2 Temperatare lor Te.tilll - Thetemperature range within which physical testsmay be carried out shall, as far as possible, be27 2C. The actual temperature during thetesting 'shall be recorded,10.3 COD.isteIlCY or StaDdard CementPte - The quantity of water required toproduce a paste of standard consistency, to beused for determination of water content ofmortar for the compressive strength tests andfor the determination of soundness and settingtime, shall be obtained by the method descri-bed in IS : 4031-1968t.

10....2 COlt oj Tesling - . The manufacturershall supply, free of charge, the cement requir-ed for testing. Unless otherwise specified inenquiry and order, the cost 9f tbe trsts shall beborne as follows:

a) By the manufacturer jf the resultsshow that the cement does not complywith this standard, and' .

b) By the purchaser if the results showthat the cement complies with thisstandard. .

10.4.3 After a representative sample hasbeen drawn, tests on the sample shall be carrjedout as expeditiously as possible.

11. REJECTION11.1 Cement may be rejected if it does notcomply wi~ any of the requirements of thisspecification.

11.2 Cement remaining in bulk storage. at themill, prior to shipment, for more than sismonths, or cement in bags in local storage inthe hands of a vendor for .more than 3 monthsafter the completion of tests, may be retestedbefore 'use 'and may be' rejected if it fails toconform to any of the requirements in thisspecification.

TOLERANCE REQ.UIREMENTS FOR THE MASS O~ CEMENT PACKED IN ,BAGS

A-I. The average net mass of cement packedin bags at the plant in a sample shall be equalto or more than 50 kg. The number of bags ina sample shall be as given below:
