Indian StandardSPECIFICATION FOR

BARIUM CARBONATE, PESTICIDAL GRADE

8. F O R E W O R D

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian StandardsInstitution on 31 Decem~ber 1984, after the draft finalized by the PestControl Sectional Committee had been approved by the Agricultural andFood Products Division Council and the Chemical Division Council.

0.2 Barium carbonate has long been used as a rat poison. Rat baits areusually prepared of one part barium carbonate and four parts of aprotein-carbohydrate rich food, such as rolled oats, fish meal, moistenedwith milk or water.

0.3 The empirical formula and molecular mass of the barium carbonateare as given below:

Empirical Formula Molecular Mass

BaCOs 197

0.4 In the preparation of this standard due consideration has been givento the provisions of the Insecticides Act, 1968 and the rules framed there-under. However, this standard is subject to the restrictions imposedunderthese, wherever applicable.

0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accor-dance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained inthe rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value inthis standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements and the method of sampl-ing and test for barium carbonate, pesticidal grade.

*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ).

2. REQUIREMENTS

2.1 Description - The material shall be in the form of dense whitepowder, odourless, non-volatile and free from extraneous matter.

2.2 The material shall also comply with the requirements specified inTable 1.

3. PACKING AND MARKING

3.1 Packing - The material shall be packed in clean and dry contain-ers made of mild steel or tinplate or fibreboard with a loose liner ofHDPE of thickness not less than O-062 mm. The containers shall alsocomply with general requirements as given in 2 of IS : 8190 ( Part 1 )-1980*.

3.2 Marking - The containers shall bear legibly and indelibly thefollowing information and any other information as is necessary underthe Insecticides Act and Rules:

a) Name of the material;b) Name of the manufacturer;c) Date of manufacture;

*Requirements for packing of pesticides: Part 1 Solid pesticides (first revision ).

3.2.1 The containers may also be marked with the ISI CertificationMark.

NOTE - The use of the IS1 Certification Mark is governed-by the provisions of theIndian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks ) Act and the Rules and Regu-lations made thereunder. The IS1 Mark on products covered by an Indiin Standardconveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the require-ments of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and qualitycontrol which is devised and supervised by IS1 and operated by the producer. IS1marked products are also continuously checked by ISI for conformity to thatstandard as a further safeguard. Detailsol conditions, under which a licence for theuse of the IS1 Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.

4. SAMPLING

4.1 Representative samples of the material shall be drawn as prescribedin IS : 10946-1984*.

5. TESTS

5.1 Tests shall be carried out by the methods referred to in co1 4 and 5of Table 1.

5.2 Quality of Reagents - Unless specified otherwise, pure chemicalsand distilled water ( see IS : 1070.1977t ) shall be employed in tests.

NOTE - c Pure Chemicals ’ shall mean chemical&hat iddo not contain impuritiulwhich affect the results of analysis.

A-2. PROCEDURE

A-2.1 Weigh accurately about 0.25 g of the material and dissolve i nabout 30 ml of dilute hydrochloric acid. Evaporate the solution to dry-ness and render silica insoluble by baking at 110°C with intermittentadditions of small quantities of concentrated hydrochloric acid. Dissolvethe residue in 20 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid, add 100 ml ofwater, boil and filter. Wash the residue with water. Collect the filtrateand the washings in a 500-ml beaker and make it alkaline with concen-trated ammonium hydroxide. Add about 1 g of ammonium chloride, pass hydrogen sulphide gas and filter. Pass hydrogen rulphide gasthrough the filtrate again till no turbidity appears. Eoil the filtrate todrive away hydrogen sulphide and test for complete removal of the gas

by lead acetate paper. Neutralize the solution with dilute hydrochloricacid using methyl orange as indicator. Add 5 to 6 drops of glacialacetic acid together with ammonium acetate solution to neutralize anyfree mineral acid. Heat the solution and add an excess of ammoniumchromate solution.

A-2.2 Allow the precipitate of barium chromate to settle for an hour.Filter through a filter paper and wash with one percent ammoniumchromate solution until the filtrate is free of soluble strontium andcalcium salts which are tested if a portion of the filtrate produces nocloudiness with ammonium hydroxide and ammonium carbonate. Finally, wash the residue free of ammonium chromate with water till aportion of the filtrate gives only slight reddish brown colour with silvernitrate solution.

A-2.3 Pierce the filter paper containing the barium chromate precipzand wash the precipitate into a beaker with hot dilute nitric acid.Dilute the solution to about 200 ml and boil. Add ammonium acetatesolution to neutralize any free nitric acid. Heat and add sufficientammonium chromate solution. Filter and repeat washings as in A-2.2above. Dissolve the precipitate of barium chromate finally in 50 to100 ml of dilute hydrochloric acid, add about 2 g of solid potassiumiodide and allow to react for 10 minutes. Titrate the liberated iodinewith standard sodium thiosulphate solution, using starch as indicator.

A-3 CALCULATION

Barium carbonate content, percent by mass = o-457 9 x VM

where

V = volume in ml of standard sodium thiosulphate, andM- mass in g of the material taken for the test.

B&l PROCEDURE

B-2.1 Mix 10 g the material with 100 ml of water and add slowly 10 mlof concentrated hydrochloric acid. Dilute with water to 200 ml and heaton a steam-bath for 30 minutes. Filter the hot solution through apreviously dried and weighed sintered glass crucible. Wash the residuewith water slightly acidified with hydrochloric acid. Again wash thecrucible with hot water till the filtrate is free from acid. Place thecrucible in a oven maintained at 110 f 2°C for 2 hours. Cool thecrucible in a dessicator and weigh.

Matter insoluble in hydrochloric acid,percent by mass = 100 x (M2; Ml )

where

Ma - mass in g of the crucible after filtration,Ml = mass in g ofthe crucible before filtration, andM = mass in g of the material taken for the test.
