    FOREWORDOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 20 July 19.89,his Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 20 July 19.89,

after the draft finalized by the Structural Sections Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civ ilfter the draft finalized by the Structural Sections Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civ il

    Engineering Division Council.ngineering Division Council.

This standard was first pubjished in 1961 covering steel plates, sheets and strips. On its first revision

in 1974 it was published in three parts covering plates, sheets and strips separately.

Steel flats which were covered separately in IS 1731 was revised in 1971 on the basis of ISO/R 1035/3-

1965. With the revision of this ISO. recommendation in 1980, the revis ion of IS 1731 was also felt

necessary. It has now been revised and amalgamated in this second revis ion of I,S 1730; wherein the

dimensions of flats habe been aligned with IS0 1035/3-1980 Hot rolled steel bari; Part 3 Dimensions of

flats bars. However, certain rationalized bar sections which are currently produced in the country have

    been retaided in this specification.

Values of mass have been given in three signif icant figures.

For the purpose,,of.&.ciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with

    the

    final

value, observed Or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance

with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised). The number of significant place:

retained in the rounded off value should be same as that of the specified value in t.his standard.

    1 SCOPE

    4.2 Sizes

1;l This standard specifies nominal dimensions,

nominal mass and surface area (for sheets) of hot-

rolled steel plates, sheets, strips and flats for structural

    aad general engineeripg ptirposes.

The standard nominal sizes of plates corresponding

to the nominal thickness specified in Table 1 shall

    be given in Table 2.

    IS 2062 : 1984 Weldable structu;:~l steel (third

    revkion).and IS 8500 : 1977 Weldable structural

$teel (tiedium and high strength qualities).

the nominal mass for plates in kg/m is given in

    Table 3 for information.
