Principal’s Report….cont…. Making the most of Opportunities It has been pleasing to see the number of students attending weekly Homework Club on a Wednesday and Thursday night, along with our Drama Club going from strength to strength. Once again, I extend an invitation to students to avail themselves of these opportunities that our staff are offering. Our school portal is a key communication tool for parent/teacher communication and provides an opportunity for parents to be aware of key assessment dates – please contact the office if you haven’t yet accessed the portal and would like to connect up to this tool. Mrs Anne Symes Acting Principal Assistant Principal’s Report Uniform Students are looking great in the winter uniform, especially the Year 10 students in their rugby jumpers. Now that the cooler weather has arrived it is expected that all students will be in correct school uniform. School jumpers need to be worn and can be purchased from LOWES. If a student is out of uniform they need to bring a note from home and report to the Student Managers for a Uniform pass. Hooded jumpers are not to be worn to school. Alpine School On Tuesday evening Jennifer Beck from Marlo visited with the selected students and their families. Successful students from Red Cliffs Secondary College and their families were also invited to the evening. The night gave the students and their families an insight into the journey the students will embark on for Term 3 2015. Information was provided on being away from home, family and friends, leadership skills, meeting and working with new people and the development of the Community Learning Project. Discovery Days On Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st 180 Grade 6 students attended Irymple Secondary College for Discovery Day. The students were from the local Primary schools and got a taste for secondary school in a welcoming and engaging setting. Students had a guided tour of the school and participated in a range of classes including Art, Drama, Cooking, Food and Wood. The Discovery Days follow a very successful Open night last month. The transition program continues throughout the year and the Grade 6 students will visit ISC again in December for a two day Orientation program. Thank you to all involved in the success of these days. Year 10 Exams Year 10 exams will be held during the last week of Term 2. The exam timetable will be published closer to the date. If a Year 10 student is going to be away during the exam period they need to let the Year 10 coordinators know ASAP so that alternate arrangements can be made for exams. Snow Trip Thanks to the families who have made payments for the Year 10 Snow Trip. Medical forms will be sent home with students and need to be completed and returned to the office by 13th June 2015. This is also when the final payment is due. Sarah Doolan Acting Assistant Principal /Student Manager

PAGE 3 Educating For Success Congratulations Mitch Undy!

A massive congratulations to Mitch Undy who has just been selected for the SCCA Sports Scholarship. Mitch will be traveling to America in August for 5 months on an exchange program. Mitch will find out in the next few weeks

what school he will be placed at and is looking forward to the opportunity to expand his Basketball skills. To be picked for this scholarship Mitch had to write an essay, have a referee and show sporting ability and once short listed undertaken an interview. Mitch is a member of the local Basketball Association and plays for the Mildura Heat. He has also in the past been picked for the NSW state Basketball team. Mitch and his family are overwhelmed with him receiving this honor as there are only a number of these scholarships handed out each year in each section. We wish Mitch and his family all the best during his exchange and hope that you achieve everything you set out to achieve.

FLO Program This past two weeks the year 10’s in FLO have been very busy getting their Work Experience ready. Most students have organized a place and are completing their Safe@Work certificates. Some of our other FLO students have had another visit to the Mildura Rural City Animal Shelter where they are helping care for, assess, walk and feed the animals. Both animals and students love the experience. In the next week we will be starting a new unit about Environmental issues. We hope that we can make a little change now that will make a big change later. Kara Taylor & Natalie Storey

Some of our FLO students in Year Nine have chosen to enrol in a MADEC course running through

the school. The course is a General Education course which includes many things like: helping with our resumes; helping us to prepare to get a job; skills we can use in a work environment

and helping us prepare for a job interview. Shortly we will be looking at environmental issues in Australia with Mrs. Taylor. We will also be creating a pathways portfolio which

will help us in many ways for the future as we are becoming older and we have to decide about our future employment and how we will get these jobs. It is also helping

us to work in co-operation with one another because we need to get along with our co-workers at a job. I believe this course will help me and many other people in the near future.

Interhouse Cross Country

Our Inter-House Cross Country run was held at Apex Park on Friday 8th May. With over 300 students participating

in the event, the day was a huge success, with everyone having a great day. The weather was cloudy and cool which made the day an ideal one for running. The cool weather and effort put in by runners might also explain part of the reason why Gibbo’s snags were so popular at the end. Many students took the opportunity to run their best times while others chose to jog and/or walk the course at their leisure. Some excellent times were recorded with age group champions and placegetters on the day being:

13 Yrs Girls – 1st and AGC – Chloe Barker (L), 2nd - Chloe Milne (M), 3rd - Shakara Delcastegne (L), 13 Yrs Boys – 1st and AGC – Jordan Stainer (R), 2nd - Joel Trevaskis (L), 3rd - Lachlan Kellett (M) 14 Yrs Girls – 1st and AGC – Shae Gathercole-Mills, 2nd - Claudia Bozzi 3rd - Kendall McLean (M) 14 Yrs Boys – 1st and AGC – Lochlan Lloyd (J), 2nd - Regan Kerslake (M), 3rd - Angus Cole (M), 15 Yrs Girls – 1st and AGC – Courtney Ransome (R), 2nd - Eliza Hill (R), 3rd - Nicola Reid (J), 15 Yrs Boys – 1st and AGC – Brak Zambelli (J), 2nd - Tom Reddy (R), 3rd - Jeremy Graham (M) 16 Yrs Girls – 1st and AGC – Demi Wall (R), 2nd - Aliza Benchmo (M), 3rd - Emily Williams (L) 16 Yrs Boys – 1st and AGC – Jake Barker (L), 2nd - Nathan Turley (L), 3rd - Frankie Parisi (L) After last year’s 1 point margin to Middleton over Johansen, we didn’t think it would be as close this year, yet the final margin this year was only 2 points between 1st and 2nd. The final scores were: Roberts 172 Points Johansen 170 Points Lloyd 160 Points Middleton 146 Points Congratulations to Roberts House, age group winners, placegetters and to everyone who “had a go”! The first 7 place getters from each age group for both males and females from our I/H Cross-Country will

represent the college at the forthcoming I/S competition to be held on the same course on Wednesday 20th May. Best of luck to our I/S team.

SEMESTER 2 INTERSCHOOL SPORT SIGN-UP DAYS. If students want to try out for any of the sports in 2nd semester, they are required to attend the final sign up

day which will be held at lunchtime tomorrow. There was also a sign-up day today and this information has been on the bulletin all of this week. If students did not attend one of these sign up days they will not be allowed to try out. If however, your son/daughter did not get their name down and they wish to try-out for one of these sports and they had a legitimate reason for not attending the sign-up days eg. absence on both of these days, they can see Mr Morrish to plead their case! The sporting competitions for second semester are: Boys Football, Boys and Girls Badminton, Boys and Girls Hockey, Boys and Girls Table-Tennis and Boys and Girls Basketball and Cricket. Pathways to PE News This semester’s Pathways to PE students have been busy practicing their teaching skills at Irymple South Primary School over the last 3 weeks. The students have been gaining an insight into what it’s like to apply their classroom learning about the way students learn into real teaching situations. The students have done a great job teaching grade 1 and grade 3 students the finer points of football, soccer, netball, down-ball, self-defence and minor games. The students have their final session with the grade 3’s this Friday before heading off to the Victorian Institute of Sport next week to investigate some more pathways options in the field of Physical Education.
