During the three-hour concert, music lovers listened in an intimate cabaret-style setting created in the Irving Arts Center on April 23. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Jackie Townsell African Drumming and Dance Clinic, and the Middle and High School Artist Showcase. “This evening is just going to be a lot of fun music,” Mr. Jones said. “The guys in the band and myself will be playing a lot of my tunes and arrangements. Annalise has been singing in the band on and off for five or six years.” “I think my music inspires people because it is all about being happy. Even the tune Something About You, something about you that makes people happy, something about you that makes you not want to leave the person you are with. That is what everything that we do is about. It’s about being happy; it’s jazz. It’s the kind of jazz that people listen to all day. It’s not moody or complicated, but it’s not too simple that a jazz musician doesn’t enjoy it. I think that is the biggest thing; the fact that it is difficult enough and enjoyable enough that everyone can like it.” “I’m trying to make it happen. I have my own label; my label belongs to my two daughters Madison and Jessica. It’s in their name, so I work for them. Most of the profits go to their educations. Jessica is 21 now; she goes to school in Chicago. Madison is 16 and goes to one of the local high schools. This is all I’ve been doing the whole time they’ve been alive,” Mr. Jones said. Colvin Gibson, past president of the Irving Black Arts Council, served as concert’s chairman. “This is an opportunity for the Black Arts Council to bring jazz to Irving,” Mr. Gibson said. “The Freddie Jones Jazz Group is an outstanding jazz group; and our message to the citizens of Irving is that you don’t have to go elsewhere in the Metroplex to get outstanding jazz. This is the second jazz performance of our season. Freddy plays throughout the Metroplex and other portions of the U.S. He teaches jazz; he writes music; he’s just an incredible talent. It is a treat for us here in Irving to have him play for the next three hours.” If you are interested in finding out more about the Freddie Jones Jazz Group, visit www.freddiejones.net. The University Hills Association of Homeowners hosted their annual Spring Fling, a neighborhood party, at Wingren Park on April 23. Leo Hull and the Texas Blues Machine provided music for the event, which included food, cheese tasting, the DFW Humane Society, four trucks from the Irving Fire Department, Maggie the clown making balloon animals and children’s games. Association president, Arnold Martin, greeted many of the attendees as they arrived at the park. “The neighborhood started this when all we had was Rochelle Park back in the 70’s. We actually had water events in those reflector lakes or duck ponds,” Mr. Martin said. “People wouldn’t dare go in those today, but back then we dunked for watermelons, greased pigs, log rolling and all those other kind of things. We’ve had a lot of things going on in the neighborhood for a long time, but I think this is the best event we could possibly have. We started holding the Spring Fling at this park four years ago; and it gets better every year. We hope it continues on in perpetuity.” “The weather is wonderful and that helps. It is amazing how many kids are here. It is absolutely fabulous to see how many people brought their kidos. I think they are all having fun. That is the whole reason for having it to get the neighborhood together and let people meet each other. We are asking people put to their street address on the bottom of their nametag; because they run into each other, and they don’t even know they live on the same street as one another until they say, ‘Hey, I live on your street. What’s your name?’ So, it is really a great exchange for us,” Mr. Martin said. “We have train rides for the kidos, jump houses, and snow cone machine. We did have a popcorn machine, but the wind blew it over. We’ve got pizza, hotdogs and beverages for everybody. The rest of it is just visiting and getting together. Of course, right now with the elections, there are quite a few people here interested in talking to folks who might be a voter; and folks who want to meet some of those running for office that they haven’t met before. It is a good venue for that too, because it’s relaxed and there is no pressure.” “Obviously this is a fabulous Spring Fling. I just told Jennifer Davis that she hit a home run. She and Chandra Muenster are our co-chairmen for the event. They have both been working hard since this time last year. As soon as we finish one year’s Spring Fling, we start planning for the next one. I just told her to get ready for next year, there’s no telling what she will do for next year,” Mr. Martin said. Spring Fling brings neighborhood together Emily Crisp (4), Will Crisp (2) and Hannah Kershner (3) play with their balloon creations while they wait to ride the train as Patsy Crisp and Sherry Johnson keep an eye on them. An anonymous gift from an IrvingHealthcare Foundation donor has funded thepurchase of a new VitalStim Therapy device, which stimulates throat muscles to aid inswallowing.

Now in use at Baylor Medical Center atIrving, the VitalStim treats dysphagia, acondition that causes discomfort or difficultyswallowing. Difficulty swallowing is commonamong stroke survivors, patients with headand neck cancer, or persons withneurological conditions like Parkinson’sdisease.

This type of Food and DrugAdministration-approved therapy uses asmall and carefully calibrated current that isdelivered through the skin of a patient’sthroat to stimulate motor nerves. Then the

muscles responsible for swallowing contractin response to this stimulation. The qualityof swallowing improves with repeatedtherapy as the associated muscles areeducated or, in the case of injury, re-educated.

Renee Vickers, M.S., CCC-SLP, a seniorspeech pathologist at Baylor Irving, notesthe value of this new equipment to patients.

“Before the VitalStim equipment arrived, our patients would have to drive to otherfacilities for this type of therapy. Now, wecan offer them the convenience of havingthis care provided at Baylor Irving,” Vickerssaid. Vickers said that the device will be usedto treat hundreds of patients each year andadds that many patients on feeding tubesare able to eat normally again or resumemodified diets after treatment.

John Drake, the Irving HealthcareFoundation president, praised the donor’sgenerosity.

“An extraordinarily generous friend ofthe Irving Healthcare Foundation made thisgift,” Drake said. “This person never seeksthe limelight when giving—but consistentlygives to meet the most critical healthcareneeds in our community.”

The Irving Healthcare Foundation is apublic charity that helps purchase medicalequipment, provides continuing healtheducation dollars for nurses and allied healthprofessionals and funds vital healthcareprograms. The foundation’s primarybeneficiaries are Baylor Medical Center atIrving and Our Children’s Center at Irving, atherapy and childcare facility for children withprofound medical or developmental needs.

Baylor Irving is the closest not-for-profithospital for more than 300,000 people wholive and work in several communities adjacentto the DFW International Airport, includingIrving, Coppell, and Grand Prairie. It alsoserves as the official hospital for the airport.

Although affiliated by an operating leasewith Dallas’ Baylor Health Care System, theindependent Baylor Irving hospital remainsowned by a local hospital authority. BaylorHealth Care System and its foundationprovide no philanthropic support for theIrving hospital; all contributions to the IrvingHealthcare Foundation are used specificallyto help Irving’s only charitable hospitalexpand its facility and services, care for theneedy and provide continuing clinicaleducation for its staff.

Paid for by committee to elect Owen DeWitt Mayor of Irving,Pat Riddle Treasurer, 516 E. 6th Street, Irving, TX 75061 - 972.579.9536 owen4irving.com

I became acquainted with Mr. DeWitt when I served as a volunteer on the IrvingSchools Foundation Board as a member of the 1999 Leadership Irving Class. As awoman of color, Owen has shown himself to be very approachable and willing to giveeveryone a fair opportunity to express their views. Our children attended schooltogether and the DeWitt’s home was always open to every child. I observed hisleadership style at board meetings and found Mr. DeWitt to be a very capable decisionmaker. His recognition of Irving icons, witnessed by his championing to name thenew Irving Elementary School - the Jackie Mae Townsell Elementary, is anotherexample of Mr. DeWitt’s desire to unite this community regardless of background, nationality or stage of life.

I encourage all voters to consider Owen DeWitt as the next Mayor of Irving. Hedefinitely has my vote.Nancy L. Jones

legally binding arbitration agreements.Particulars of arbitration agreements varygreatly; and these differences mean a lot whenbullies harass you on your job.

A dispute erupted between Keith Harrodand managers in the Citigroup office wherehe worked in the Citigroup Credit Servicescall center in Las Colinas beginning in August2002. This story is important becauseCitigroup is expanding its already extensiveoperations in Las Colinas and soon will beone of the area’s largest employers. Peopleinterested in working for Citigroup need toknow how this company handles harassmentcomplaints.

Because call center positions normallyattract younger people, Mr. Harrod was theonly person over 40 in his training group. From the beginning, Mr. Harrod claims hewas harassed about his age. He complainedbut rather than bringing the harassment toan end, he believes these complaints led tohis termination on January 24, 2003.

Arbitration was awarded to Mr. Harrod’scase based on the terms outlined in theCitigroup U.S. Consumer Group EmployeeHandbook, which states a case is arbitratedonly when the “dispute is based on legallyprotected rights (i.e., statutory, contractual,or common law)”.

However, the arbitrator decided againstMr. Harrod who then turned to the U.S. Courtof Appeals, 5th Circuit, where his case is stillpending. Mr. Harrod successfully appealedthe arbitrator’s decision because of three keyrules, which provide additional protection for

Citigroup employees. These are:

(1) Expanded rules of admissible evidence.Mr. Harrod to introduced evidence that hemight not have been able to presentotherwise.(2) The arbitrator must explain his or herruling. Without such an explanation, furtherappeals are almost impossible.(3) The arbitrator does not have authority tobe capricious or arbitrary. This clause allowsan appeal to the federal courts and givesfederal judges the right review cases andoverturn unfair rulings.

One might expect Mr. Harrod is criticalof the way Citigroup has handled his case, but one would be mistaken. In fact, Mr.Harrod thinks Citigroup’s arbitration policyis excellent.

“It specifically does not authorize thearbitrator to be capricious and arbitrary,” Mr.Harrod said. “It does not call for the employeeto pay or split the cost of the arbitrationhearings. It gives expanded allowance toevidence that can be presented. It alsomandates that the arbitrator must explain hisruling.”

The Citigroup Headquarters on LongIsland is Mr. Harrod’s hero in the story.Executives in New York insured that he wastreated fairly at every step in the dispute. They did not side uncritically withmanagement, and company procedures madecertain both parties were heard. Policies thatguarantee fair treatment during the moststrenuous and contentious situationsreassure those who may be thinking ofworking for Citigroup.

The Irving Art Association hosted anartist reception and award presentation forthe 20th annual Texas and Neighbors RegionalExhibition in the Irving Arts Center on April24. Texas and Neighbors Regional Exhibitionwill be open for viewing free of chargethrough May 15.

“This is our 20th year to do the Texasand Neighbors; it began in 1985,” NinaHardison, president of the Irving ArtAssociation, said. “When the Irving ArtsCenter opened they didn’t have an art exhibit.Richard Huff, I believe it was at the time, asked the Irving Art Association to bringartists over, so the Arts Center could have agrand opening. That is where it all began.Next year in 2006, the Irving Arts Associationwill be 50 years old. We are the oldest culturalarts group in the city.”

“Artists that are in this show come fromfive different states: Arkansas, Texas,Oklahoma, Louisiana and New Mexico. Ithink this year we received over 400 entries. Our juror, Doug Dawson, is a well-knownpastelist. Mr. Dawson came and narrowedthe selection down for us to about 95paintings. Every medium is represented. Weget a lot of participation; we send out about3,000 prospectuses throughout the fivestates. Every year we have a wonderfulturnout, and people seem to enjoy it. It is allabout providing art for the community,” Ms.Hardison said.

Suzanne Waggoner’s painting AncientAscension won the exhibition’s Best of Show.

“Winning Best of Show is exhilarating,”Mrs. Waggoner said. “Thirteen years ago, Idid this painting just the starting of thestairwell, and the juror Doug Dawsonawarded best in show. Well, I had started onthis painting 10 years ago in 1995. It has taken10 years to finish the painting because thepaper is so soft it absorbed the watercolor. The more I painted the more the colordisappeared. So, it is part of the same paintingfrom 1993. It is not my ability to paint as muchas it is the subject matter. This is a moodytype of building that you are not going torush when you go to paint it. That buildingchallenged me not to put every single detail, but it challenged me to get that cold airfeeling. It was 60o in there; it was 102o outsidein the street.”

“When I finished this year, DougDawson was again doing the jurying. For aperilous second, I thought he is going torecognize this and think I am entering thesame painting. I just decided to put it undermat and frame, and enter it anyway. I’m surehe remembered aspects of it, but didn’tremember the original concept.”

“Doug Dawson is a pastelist that teachesconcepts of dark and light. He loves hardcorelight and moody darks. This building has lentitself for years to those kinds of paintings. Itis full of moody dark and light, things comingforward, things disappearing into theshadows. It is a beautiful old building builtin 1890 in Memphis in the old industrialsection. I have been visiting that buildingsince 1977 and watched its demise. Nobody

Society of Professional Engineers awardedIrving City Councilman Lewis Patrick theService to People award in recognition of hisprofessional accomplishments and hisservice to the general public.

After stints working at Lone Star Gasand Bell Helicopter, Mr. Patrick joined theCity of Irving in October of 1957 as a designengineer. In 1961 he became the City Engineerand the Director of Public Works until hisretirement in 1994. During his tenure, Mr.Patrick oversaw the rapid growth of Irvingand the required development of thenecessary supporting structure. Las Colinasand Texas Stadium are two of his major

engineering successes. As Public WorksDirector, Mr. Patrick helped secure waterrights to Lake Chapman then helped developthe 80-mile pipeline that brings water to Irvingand North Texas.

“When I joined the city staff, Irving wasthirty or thirty-five thousand people. I justgrew with the city and never had any reasonto leave. It has been a service to the peoplefor me,” Mr. Patrick said.

City Engineer Bob Chapman, who workedwith Mr. Patrick at the City of Irving, endorsed Mr. Patrick’s nomination.

“As a young engineer, it was importantto be able to work in an environment thatwas a tremendous challenge, but one inwhich I always felt confident and supported.I owe that primarily to Lewis,” Mr. Cline said.

It is condemnedand marked ‘do not enter’, but there is alwaysa place in the wall to get into this building. One time all the doors were open, and theyhad a hard-hat group of men going throughthere. I picked up a hard-hat, pretended I waswith the group, and walked all over thatbuilding that afternoon. I have some splendidpictures.”

“This is one of the best shows in theUnited States. I just wish every state qualifiedfor this being in this slender border ofaccepted states. The people here support theartists without condition. If you paint, theylove you. There are a lot of shows that treattheir some of their competitors or painters asentertainment. These people treat us as weare contributing to the social fabric in a niceway; it is much different,” Mrs. Waggonersaid.

Hi Irving!

Have you been to the airport lately? Doyou remember my article about two weeksago about going to meet the troops? Haveyou gone? It’s really a blessing.

There are actually many programs atDFW, not only the USO. You can be an AirportAmbassador that provides vital customerassistance to DFW customers by greeting, informing, and directing thousands oftravelers from all over the world. The airportprovides an orientation program forAmbassador volunteers, which includes twoeight-hour training sessions. Incorporatedinto these training sessions are airportproperty tours, terminal exploration, andguidelines. The hours for volunteering arevery flexible and available any days of theweek.

Can you believe that DFW handles over56 million passengers a year? They come toa huge airport and often cannot find theirgate, terminal, etc. The Airport Ambassadorprogram is, therefore, much needed andappreciated. For additional informationplease contact the Ambassador programmanager Karen Turner at 972-574-1492 oremail her at [email protected]. Withthe Skylink High Speed train and theInternational Terminal D to open this summer, they are in great need of more volunteers. You even get a uniform. How about that?

Don’t forget to go vote because if youdon’t, you let someone else voice theiropinion over yours. If you don’t vote duringearly voting, which ends May 3rd, you cango on Election Day (Saturday), May 7th.

Attend Church Sunday.God Bless You.

Now is the time to be accounted for. Nowis the time to get involved. Our city leadershipcan form a proactive vision for the futureand be responsive to the citizens. With yourhelp Irving will restore its inheritance not onlyfor us but also for our children. Vote, volunteer your time, and get energized abouta new dawn.

Jason Watkins, D.C.Irving ResidentIrving City Council Candidate, Place 3

PLACE 5

Fellow Citizens of Irving:

We have three candidates running forIrving City Council Place 5, all of them haveexcellent qualifications but in some importantareas one stands alone. Roland Medinawants to devote himself to being YOUR FULLTIME city councilman.

Roland has no business to run, hischildren are grown and he has the time todevote to you and me, the citizens of Irving,as he represents us at council meetings, worksessions and at community activities. He iscommitted to both economic developmentand to strengthening our currentneighborhood associations and inspiring thecreation of more neighborhood associations.Roland is the only candidate advocating“Town Hall” meetings to allow the input ofall concerned citizens so that he will be wellversed on the feelings and opinions of allIrving citizens. Roland is an active civicleader in both the Anglo and Hispaniccommunities, he is bilingual and hisqualifications meet or exceed those of theother two candidates.

I am supporting Roland and ask thatanyone who reads this visit his websitewww.electrolandmedina.com before makingtheir decision in the place 5 council race.Roland truly wants to work with every citizenin our diverse community to improve thequality of life in our city. Please give Rolandyour support so that he can support you inthe future. Remember that no matter whatpart of town you live in you may vote in eachof the council elections: place 3 and 5.

Letter to the editor:

In the near future our city will be goingthrough a critical election for City Counciland Mayor. As a long time resident of Irving,

my wife and I have seen many changes inour city. We feel it is time to elect a strongleader to guide and direct our cities future. We will be supporting David Cole for CityCouncil Place 5.

David has been raised in this city, andcurrently is a business owner here. He hasshown integrity and dedication in his pastcivic responsibilities, but most importantly, are his concerns for family, friends and thecitizens of Irving. David will work to unifythe city and will focus on the immediatechallenges that we face today. His experiencewill help him in supporting the citieseconomic development, while maintainingneighborhood integrity. He will bring a fresh, new attitude to city hall.

My family and I look forward to our citymoving in a positive direction and by electingDavid Cole he will get Irving back on track.

Sincerely,Darin and Erika Furbush

MAYORIAL RACE

By Carol Van Luik

When I signed up for the mayoral race, Iclearly indicated that I would willingly stepdown support another candidate were thereone who would put Irving above their ownpersonal agenda, speak to the needs of bothnorth and south Irving, endeavor to establisha plan to secure the economic future of Irvingand had sufficient political capital to securea winner’s share of the vote.

One of the candidates to throw his hatinto the mayoral race was ex-mayor, MarvinRandle and I have kept my promise. He willcompete along with incumbent, Joe Putnam, former city council members, Herb Gears andTerry Waldrum, Owen DeWitt, Thomas (?)Spink and Melvin Pullen.

That is seven candidates and frankly, itwould have been best for the ‘i City’ if someof our candidates had done a little moreresearch; they might have realized theefficacy of keeping the number of candidatesto a minimum.

Statistically, past mayoral elections haveshown the greater the number of candidates, the increased likelihood that the incumbentwill win.

In my opinion, the only candidate withenough influence to overcome the odds isMarvin Randle. At this critical juncture inhistory, Irving would be best served by amayor who has learned from the pastexperience thus eliminating the learning curveof a mayor with no prior experience.

Dear Editor,

I am very concerned about the directionof our community. I believe we need electedleaders we can trust. I believe we should electpeople who are dependable and who haveproved themselves. I will be supporting AllanMeagher in Place 3 of the Irving City Councilfor exactly those reasons.

He has proved himself as a communityleader, an elected official, a husband andfather. He has shown himself to bedependable in his application to his dutieson the city council and in his devotion to hiswife and children. The fact he works hard tomake a living is a plus also as far as I am

concerned. I really like his attitude too. He isalways courteous and treats people withrespect. As our community seems so dividedright now, I am proud to support a youngman who has the ability and the desire tobring us together.

Jamie Hicks

Open Letter to the Citizens of Irving,

We have a unique opportunity in thecoming weeks. Our city needs your help, notonly your ballot but your time. It’s no secretthat we have lost a large portion of our keyfamilies in the past years, people that donatedefforts to the Chamber, Symphony, HeritageFoundation and many others.

Our city is hemorrhaging talented, capable contributors. Many that are still herefeel frustrated, believing that time donatedto the city is squandered. Irving does notenjoy the reputation among its peers in thearea that it once did. We have deviated fromthe path of enrichment, but we have not lostthe entitlements that our predecessorsentrusted us with. Irving has not drifted toofar to correct its course. It is my opinion thata renewed spirit and sense of leadership fromall our elected officials is approaching.

OBITUARIES

Marvin Randle has learned extensivelyfrom his experience as a business owner, former mayor and president of the GreaterIrving Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce. For decades, he has freely given of his timeand resources to the needs of our city.

He is uniquely equipped and motivatedto secure the economic future of our city andrevitalize the neighborhoods and is willingto step up to the plate at the time when Irvingneeds a mayor with both the depth ofexperience and a heart to see its futuresecured.

Irving is a wonderful city full of amazingpeople who deserve the best. You deservethe best, so please, take time to learn aboutyour candidates and vote on May 7, 2005.

Editor:

The May 7th election is one of the mostcritical times for our city. Although Irving’sbest days are ahead, the city currently hassafety concerns and budget shortfalls thatthreaten our future success and reverting tothe people and ideas of the past will no longerwork in the 21st century. As a former CityCouncil member who wants the best for mycity, I believe that our next mayor should bea dedicated, educated, and honorable personwho has the ability to be Irving’s best PublicRelations Ambassador. With these qualitiesfor our city’s leader, I believe Owen DeWittis the best candidate for Mayor of Irving.

Owen’s public service experienceincludes being IISD Vice-President whoraised education standards every year of histenure. He has also been a relentlessfundraiser while serving as President of IrvingSchools Foundation and has most recentlyserved on the TIF board. In the private sector,Owen built a thriving technology firm byfostering his relationships with executivesat IBM, Cisco, Microsoft, and Novell. Hisintegrity and vision make him a successfulleader, while his charisma and powerfulprofessional network make him the bestcandidate who can effectively promote ourcity.

My wife, Lillian, and I ask our friendsand neighbors to join us in voting for OwenDeWitt on May 7th.

Gene Sparks

Editor,

Herb Gears - gets my vote.

To have compassion requires feeling the painof another’s heart. Being rich requires beinga friend to the poorest heart among you, knowing they have nothing to give in return.A man with vision knows this requiresreaching beyond ones self and requiresexchange, becoming a servant and replacingthe place’s of weakness with the strengthswe’re given. I find these qualities in Herb

Gears and believe wisdom could walk throughhis heart to a city that keeps stumblingbecause of the smallness in men’s voices. Aman that knows the power behind the stonecan exchange self - and slay giants.

Editor:

Some of the mayoral candidates aretaking aim at Marvin Randle to further theircampaign to become mayor. Marvin hastaken the high road and run a very positivecampaign. He has been a leader in thecommunity and in his church for his entirelife. Most of the past council members andmayors have either left town or are notinvolved.

Marvin has volunteered his time to thecity and stayed active since he was mayorbecause he loves the City of Irving. He hasoutstanding work ethics, experience workingwith various groups and organizations, andnew innovative ideas for the city. He is aCAN DO person and we need him NOW!

Please help us elect Marvin Randle forMayor. We need his vision and his toughdecision-making abilities. He is a “GETREAL” man and wants to move the city

forward. Let’s stop blaming others for Irving’sproblems and look at the successes aroundus. Look at Richardson’s leadership in fillingtheir vacant office space, Garland for theirleadership in Code Enforcement, Grapevinefor their shopping centers, hotels, andArlington’s aggressive drive in acquiring theCowboys. Irving needs to learn from and takeadvantage of these successes.

Marvin will meet the challenge. Ichallenge you to make your voice heard –Vote for Marvin Randle for Mayor.

Kaye and Oscar Ward

Editor:

This year’s mayoral race is critical for Irving’sfuture, and there are a number of strongcandidates. In my opinion, Terry Waldrum isthe best of the group.

Terry has a plan for the Cowboys to payfor the demolition of the stadium by imposingtaxes on parking and ticket sales, and he’sthe only one of our candidates to come upwith a common sense approach to theCowboy’s exit strategy that won’t cost usmoney.

Every candidate has ideas on what todo with the stadium land, but no

one else looked at the massive expense oftearing down the stadium.

Terry’s also interested in redevelopmentof downtown Irving to spread the tax basemore equitably between North and SouthIrving. His ideas are based on promoting theamenities of South Irving — downtownparks, the Senior Center, and the rail transitsystem — to bring more housingand businesses to South Irving.

Terry’s ideas do not involve taxincentives or the development ofadditional low rent apartments to bring morehousing and businesses to South Irving. Hisideas will bring more senior citizens withdiscretionary income and commuters huntingfor higher income housing toSouth Irving, and this along with changingcodes to approve theappearance of businesses andneighborhoods will greatly improve theconditions in South Irving to increaseproperty values and spread thetax base more equally between North andSouth Irving.

Terry Waldrum’s a person who can’t be“bought,” and he’s an independent, commonsense thinker who’s not tied to a politicalnetwork. If we vote Terry in as mayor, he’sgoing to do the job — not

If you are concerned that you have toknow the books to enjoy the movie, thinkagain. I had never read a word of them andhad no problem keeping up. I am sure thebooks help with character depth, but a lackof this knowledge will not hinder your moviegoing experience.

The books have always had a cultfollowing all their own, and I am sure that themovie will grab all the others who have failedto get on board. It is rated PG for thematicelements, action and mild language. Thoughit is suitable for anyone over the age of 10the British, wry, wit and tongue and cheekhumor may be a little over the heads ofyounger viewers. All others will find this filmwonderfully humorous and exciting. I give it4 out of 5 towels.

repay favors to campaign supporters. When one of the other mayoral

candidates tried to “buy” him out of therace, Terry said, “No.” He’s committed tomaking Irving a better placeto live, and he can’t be “bought.” If anothercandidate with “money toburn” wants to “buy” Terry out of the race, then we can assume thatTerry is the candidate that others see as thecandidate to beat.

In my opinion, Terry Waldrum is a manof integrity and someone who willput common sense to work in Irving for ourbenefit.

Letters to the Editor

To whom it may concern,

A self appointed person (orgroup) in Irving is trying todiscredit Marvin for Mayor. Theiraccusations are 20 years old andthey do not sign their names.Isn’t this the work or cowards? Ihave watched this person foryears, and I know the type ofperson he was when he came totown and attacked JackieTownsell, who was a friend of allof us. I will be looking forwardwhen this particular individualleaves our city.

NOW, for the rest for thestory: As a friend of Marvin’s, letme tell you just a few things aboutthe last 10 years. Marvin has beenteaching children in his churchmost of his adult life. When thechurch needed transportation, hepersonally bought them a vehicle.

He was committed with thesuccessful leadership of buildinga new church. Marvin and his wife,Bobbie, bring children of all races, some disadvantages, into theirhome for swim/ice cream partiesand help with their manyeconomical and personalproblems.

I personally know what thetwo of them did for me when mywife passed away two and a halfyears ago. It was a tremendoushelp to me.

I don’t’ know of many businesspeople that didn’t have problemsin the 80’s. Calling of notes, foreclosures, bankruptcies, etc.Marvin has gone through toughtimes and survived. That’s what weneed as Mayor.

DO IT ANY WAY!Author Unknown

People are often unreasonable, Illogical, and self-centered;Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, People may accuse you of selfish, ulteriormotives;Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, You will win some false friends andsome true enemies;Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, People may cheat you;Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, Someone could destroyovernight;Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, They may be jealous;Be happy anyway.

Give the world the best, you have, and it may never beenough;Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, It is between you and God;It never was between you and them anyway.

VOTE FOR MARVIN RANDLE!

By Brynne SissomIrving and Dallas chapters of the Wind

and Fire Motorcycle Club are sponsoringtheir third annual Parkland Foundation BurnCamp Run next Saturday, May 7. The eventfeatures a poker run on motorcycles and aparade of antique fire engines. Half of theproceeds of the poker run will providescholarships for young people to attend aweek-long camp for burn survivors at CampI-Thonka-Chi in Meridian, Texas, and theother half provides prize money for the pokerrun. After the parade, the festivities continueat Stroker’s Ice House with door prizes, a liveband, an auction and fund-raising drawings.

“Last year the chapters raised $10,000together and we aim to match that again,”firefighter and Irving club president, RebelBurkhalter, said. “Everyone who rides amotorcycle is welcome to participate in thepoker run and parade.”

During the poker run, bikers ride fromWillie’s Lounge on Beacon Street, and cruisefrom point to point collecting a card at eachstop until each rider has five cards. The laststop is back at Willie’s, where riders have theoption of buying a sixth card for five dollars, and then the best and worst poker handswin a quarter of the proceeds apiece.

Afterwards, at 3:00 p.m., riders andfirefighters will form a parade from Willie’s toStroker’s Ice House on Harry Hines includingantique fire engines. Parade admission is tendollars with all proceeds going directly tothe camp. The poker run and parade will takeplace rain or shine.

Founded three years ago, the Irvingchapter of Wind and Fire Motorcycle Clubhas both men and women members. Windrepresents the biking activities of the cluband Fire represents the members’ firefightingprofession.

Event organizer Rebel Burkhalter, enjoysthe trip to the camp.

“Once the cash is raised, we all meet onthe road around Midlothian and bike togetherto Camp John Marc near Meridian. Burn Weekin particular is called I-Thonka-Chi. It means‘a place that makes one strong or fearless, not afraid to face life.’ We always arrive onWednesday of burn camp and theparticipants anticipate us. We park our bikesin the shade and let them cool off. Later, about150 kids swarm around us and the bikes. It’sfun,” he said.

“It’s hard to say enough cool thingsabout this camp. Every week Camp John Marc

provides a different type of camp for cancerpatients, or kidney patients or kids inwheelchairs. When it is dialysis camp, itbecomes the biggest and busiest dialysiscenter in Texas. We go at burn week,” Mr.Burkhalter said.

Chapter Sergeant-at-Arms David Giesekeagrees that the camp is inspiring.

“It’s such a good feeling to be with thekids at Burn Week. We look forward and theylook forward to that Wednesday. We have arapport with them because we were the firsthelping person they knew after their injury.Kids are more accepting here becauseeverybody’s been burned. Everybody is

equal. There is a lot of teaching, as some ofthem are afraid of fire. Camp activities helpdesensitize those feelings. By the end of theweek the kids are roasting marshmallows atthe camp fire where at first they were afraidto approach the fire at all,” Mr. Gieseke said.

Carrollton Fire Department sends foodfor the camp and the Fort Worth Departmentsends a fire truck that sprays water over afield to make it muddy. The kids go play inthe mud and come in for lunch.

“It’s a natural that we choose burnrecovery as our charity,” Gieseke said.

Anyone interested in participating in therun should call Rebel Burkhalter at 972-965-1432.
