*(Dear Dana, all hotel rooms are based on two travelers in one room. For families who wish to have three travelers in one room, there may be a slight surcharge associated with the addition of an extra bed, the booking of a triple category room, or the booking of a separate double room if neither of the first two options are available.)

Welcome to the pristine and beautiful Hokkaido! Upon your arrival from New Chitose Airport, you will be greeted by your VIP Guide at the arrival gate and transfer you to Sapporo via private car (a chartered bus for your group, this vehicle type is standard for all legs of your trip), to your hotel. Along the way, please ask your guide any questions you have on activities or Hokkaido. After your group has had a moment to check into your accommodations, your guide is at your service. We will take you to explore some of Sapporo’s most beautiful public parks, most interesting shopping areas and its incredibly unique ‘underground city’ where we can shop, explore or simply enjoy this modern testament to civil engineering.

In the evening your group will dine at Ramen Alley for a true taste of Sapporo! This incredible section of restaurants is a network of Ramen (noodle) restaurants, Izakayas (small gastropubs) and Pachinko parlors (a pinball-like game). Afterwards we will return you to your hotel.

*(Dana please note this will be the farthest journey for your time in Hokkaido at roughly 4 hours by car. If you wish we can amend this to a round-trip flight (roughly 45 minutes) for your visit to Kushiro at a small surcharge.)

In the morning after breakfast, we will take you out for a day of trying to find Japan’s most beautiful icon: the Tancho or Red Crowned Crane. You will first arrive at Kushiro Marsh. Kushiro Marsh stretches out to the north of Kushiro in eastern Hokkaido. This is a huge wetland with an overall area of 183 square kilometers, and is a prime viewing spot for some of the rare flora and fauna (especially birds), which populate Hokkaido. You will travel through slowly, to give you the best chance of spotting wildlife. Our main goal here will be to introduce you to the crane. If we are unsuccessful here, we will take you to the little-known ‘Tsurui Village’ where a single elderly caretaker has been tending to and feeding cranes for over 50 years, for another attempt to see this stunning and graceful animal. We will be happy to provide lunch at one of Hokkaido’s famed Izakayas or charming family restaurants. (Kushiro is known for having excellent seafood).

Afterwards, we will return you Sapporo so you can rest and freshen up. In the evening, dinner reservations will be made for the following restaurant :

Mikuni stands out as the best French-style restaurants in the city. Managed by Kiyomi Mikuni, a renowned chef from Hokkaido, it is one of dining experiences offered within the city. The style of Mikuni can be described as French fusion cuisine, with a menu filled with staple dishes of traditional French cuisine, re-invented by the chef who makes a point of using only the freshest local produce for his creations. Innovative recipes, combined with an excellent wine list, impeccable service and a jaw-dropping view from the 35th floor of the building, mix together to create one of the best high-end dining experiences in Sapporo. *

*(Please pay locally for your dinner at this fine dining establishment, as we cannot predict what delicacies you will wish to order.)

Sapporo - Hidaka - Sapporo | 21 August 2015

By private car we will transfer you to Hidaka and go for an exciting white-water rafting tour on one of the most adventurous rivers in Japan.

Hidaka is located at the base of Hidaka Mountains (roughly 1.5 hours from Sapporo), which is a mountain range in southeastern Hokkaido. It runs 150 km from Mount Sahoro or Karikachi and runs into the sea at Cape Erimo. Please note that there are two course options available. The regularly course (GRADE 2 OR 3) with a minimum age requirement of 13 years of age or the Family course (GRADE 1) with a minimum age of 3 years old. For any travelers under these minimum ages there are no courses available and we will be unable to provide white-water rafting for these parties.

For any families who are unable to partake in the white-water rafting listed above, we would recommend a visit to the stunning and incredibly ‘Kawaii’ Asahiyama Zoo (roughly two hours away from Sapporo) to explore the animal exhibits, including the famous ‘March of the Penguins”. After exploring the Zoo we will return you to Sapporo to await the arrival of the other families.

For either party we will be happy to provide lunch at one of Hokkaido’s famed Izakayas or charming family restaurants.

Afterwards, we will return you Sapporo so you can rest and freshen up. Dinner will be at the following restaurant :

Sapporo Beer Garden is a history lover’s dream. The restaurant is located in the Genghis Khan Hall, a beautiful government building built in the 23rd year of the Meiji Period. From the exterior, with its beautiful red brick walls covered in ivy, to the interior with a giant brass cauldron from the Taisho period, Sapporo Beer Garden excels in creating the perfect atmosphere to accompany a great meal. The menu offers a solid variety of meats but what truly stands out is the Genghis Khan, a local specialty that consists of (all-you-can-eat) barbecued mutton or lamb best served with an ice-cold Sapporo beer on the side.

Arrival in Lake Toya | 22 August 2015

Today we will split into two groups, one for the fathers or mothers participating in the Ironman challenge (this group will scout the race site) The other group will explore the areas in and around Lake Toya with both groups meeting up afterwards for an onsen rest and dinner.

For the non-racers, from Sapporo, pass by Tomakomai, Shiraoi and you will arrive at Noboribetsu. Noboribetsu is one of Hokkaido’s major locus of hot springs. After a few minutes’ walk from the hot spring town, check out the rising steam and puddles of bubbling water that hiss and gurgle before you. After exploring, you can all enjoy a soak in the hot springs and we will set up lunch for you at a local eatery.

Leaving Noboribetsu, you will encounter the panoramic sight of Orofure Pass while on your way towards Lake Toya. You can reach the pass in about 30 minutes and from the observation deck, you will be enchanted by an unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean. We will continue onto Lake Toya, which lies about 1 hour’s drive from Orofure Pass. You will be enjoying this lake with the surrounding Showa Shinzan, Mount Usu and Mount Yotei

Afterwards, both groups will meet up at their hotel to check in and enjoy an Onsen session if they wish. In the evening, please dine locally at the hotel with your friends and family members.

Arrival in Sapporo | 24 August 2015

In the morning, please rest in your hotel and prepare for a final relaxing Hokkaido experience.

We have arranged an onsen session for your party in Jozankei, the main onsen resort town of Hokkaido and a relaxing one hour transfer by car from Sapporo. Here you can explore a quaint Onsen environment, where you can hike in wilderness, schedule a message, or simply soak in the refreshing steam of one of the town’s many onsens. We are happy to arrange lunch here for your party.

In the evening after your Onsen session, we will return you to your hotel for your final night stay in Sapporo. Our dinner recommendation currently is the following:

Sapporo is widely considered to be one of the best sushi destinations in Japan, and at the very top of that category stands Hanamaru. Hanamaru serves its dishes on a conveyor belt: each plate is color-coded and each color corresponds to a price. Guests can pick and choose whatever dish they prefer and at the end of the meal the waitresses count the stack of dishes and bring the bill. Considering the excellent quality of the fish, Hanamaru is surprisingly affordable. The cheerful atmosphere and the mouthwatering sushi make this venue a mandatory, casual stop when visiting Sapporo. (Please pay locally for your dinner at this unique dining establishment, as we cannot predict what delicacies you will order.)

Arrival in Tokyo| 25 August 2015

*The cost of your flight is currently featured into our quote (based on one or several particular flights we feel are the most logistically sensible. Your final flight will be issued upon the confirmation of your itinerary as pre-confirmation we cannot guarantee particular flight times. Please note Mandarin Journeys avoids budget airlines (Air Asia, Jetstar, etc.) unless these flights are the obvious and most pragmatic option. Currently the cost is based on premier carriers, in economy class seating.

In the morning, we will transfer you by private car (a private chartered bus) to New Chitose Airport for your flight to mainland Japan, filled with many memories of Hokkaido’s stunning natural beauty and the great race you have celebrated together with your families. You will arrive at Haneda Airport and proceed through immigration; collect baggage, and clear customs. From here you will be met in the arrival gate by our English speaking assistant (separate from our VIP guides) for your transfer(a private chartered bus, this vehicle type is standard for your exploration of Hokkaido and Honshu)and be taken directly into your hotel.

After checking into your hotel, enjoy a free day in Tokyo. Early check-in is at the hotel’s discretion but is unlikely to be a problem. We will be providing you three-day metro passes so you can explore Tokyo’s incredible public transportation system and city as you see fit.

We are happy to make dining recommendations or reservations for you in the evening. Of course we HIGHLY RECOMMEND you reserve restaurants with us before your arrival to Japan. We will be providing your group a separate sheet to review to best choose the restaurant (or restaurants) you wish us to reserve for your time in Tokyo & Kyoto. Please note reserving restaurants is far more complex and rigorous in Japan than in most countries. Thus it must be done well in advance and through the proper channels to be executed successfully.

Tokyo | 26 August 2015

Today your VIP guide will meet you at your hotel to discuss what to do today. You will then head out to explore Tokyo by Metro. For Today our suggestions are as follows (As we cannot predict where you will go or what you will wish to see, on this day, please pay for entrance fees locally, please also pay for your guide’s entrance fees as needed. These costs are likely to be very incidental if they even exist at all.):

The Gardens of TokyoFor a city of its size and urban density, Tokyo has some of the most stunning parks and gardens in the World. We highly recommend exploring these with your VIP guide as an ideal ‘getting away from it all’ experience while in Japan’s biggest city.

The Miyazaki Museum Located near the JR Mikata station, this museum is a tribute to the quirky nature and philosophy of Studio Ghibli and their founder, the ‘Walt Dizney of Tokyo’ Hanyo Miyazaki. Here you will be able to gain insight in a fun and fluid way from the multiple interactive exhibits that Miyazaki personally oversaw in design to both educate and delight future generations of Japanese. With Miyazaki in the twilight of his years (and having recently retired) we view this museum as a ‘must visit’ if you are a fan of Anime or discovering the quirkly but thoughtful sensibilities of Japan’s youth.

The Edo Tokyo MuseumWhile considerable strides have been made in the travel industry over the last century, time travel remains tantalizingly out of reach. Visitors to Tokyo, however, can experience the next best thing by spending a couple of hours at the Edo Tokyo Museum. Covering 400 years of the city’s rich history, the museum effectively recreates the sights and general ambience of the Edo (1603-1868), Meiji (1868- 1911), Taisho (1912-1926), and Showa (1926-1989) periods, in a cleverly designed building covering approximately 300,000 sq.ft. After crossing a realistic replica of the Nihonbashi, the bridge from whence all roads to Tokyo converged, visitors encounter the history, art, and culture, as well as the disasters, wars, and governments that have resulted in the city we know today. Details such as replicas of a wooden sewage pipe and mangy stray cats vie for attention with scale models of shops, private homes, markets, and recreations of European and American influences through the Second World War. All in all, an excellent introduction to both Tokyo and Japan at large.

Also highly recommended is Nakano Manga: Nakano Broadway (中野フロートウェイ ). This area is a shopping complex in Tokyo famous for its many stores selling anime items and idol goods, including more than a dozen small Mandarake stores, which specialize in manga and anime related collectibles. The shopping complex is a short walk from Nakano Station, which is five minute train ride from Shinjuku via the JR Chuo Line.

Tokyo – Nikko – Tokyo | 27 August 2015

Today we recommend taking a day trip with your VIP guide to the incredible and historic city of Nikko only two and a half hours from Tokyo by railway. We will be providing you with a two-day Nikko Pass (the best overall value) so you can explore Nikko as extensively as you wish. Though please note if you wish to stay in Tokyo, you are more than welcome to do so.

Much has been written about Nikko in the past 150 years since the first Westerners were granted access to this hallowed town — and for good reason: it’s magnificent. Beginning with the Toshogu (perhaps best known for the Three Sacred Monkeys carved above its entryway), the spectacular mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu whose shogunate ruled Japan from 1604 to 1868, the complex of shrines and temples includes over a dozen distinct structures. The elaborate carvings used to decorate many of the buildings are found nowhere else in Japan and seem in direct contradiction to the simplicity found in most shrines. Nearby, Rinnoji Sanbutsdo stands as a tribute to the 8th century monk Shodo Shonin who introduced Buddhism to Nikko. Inside, visitors can find huge golden wooden statues to the three deities believed to be Buddhist manifestations of the original mountain gods: Amida (Buddha), Senju-Kannon (1000-armed Kannon), and Bato Kannon (horsehead Kannon). The shrine is currently ensconced in scaffolding as part of a major renovation project, but remains accessible to the public. Finally, the Taiyuinbyo, mausoleum of the grandson of Ieyasu, draws attention for its blending of Buddhist and Shinto elements. Marginally less lavish than Toshogu, it still manages to hold its own in with its ornate carvings.

Also well worth a look is the Tamozawa Imperial Villa, built in 1899. Its 106 rooms blend aesthetics from the Edo and Meiji periods, as it began life in Tokyo as the residence of a branch of the Tokugawa clan before briefly serving as the Imperial palace. Once relocated to Nikko, it functioned as a summer retreat for the Emperor and his crew until WWII when it was abandoned, and it now reigns as one of Japan’s oldest wooden buildings. The interior is a bit of a jumble, mixing Western touches such as carpeted floors and chandeliers along with traditional Japanese Sliding shoji doors and tatami mats. The surrounding gardens are especially lovely, well tended, and peaceful.

Not far away the Kanmangafuchi Abyss can be accessed via a walking trail along the river. Here, one can find the 70+ Narabi Jizo, or Jizo-in-a-line, the Bodhisattva protector of women, children, and travelers in the six realms of existence. Many of the statues, each with a slightly different face, are clad in bright red bibs or knitted hats in recognition of their importance for children. country. The Jizos look out across the river toward Nikko’s beautiful botanical garden, overseen

by the University of Tokyo. Since its dedication in 1902, the garden has served the school for the research of alpine plants and now boasts nearly 2200 species acquired from around the

Finally, the Shinkyo (Sacred) Bridge, originally constructed in 1636 on the site of a much older bridge, exists as one of Japan’s three outstanding bridges. (The other two are in Iwakuni and Yamahashi respectively.) Like the rest of Nikko, the bridge underwent extensive renovations in the late ‘90s but as a result, visitors may now cross to the shrines and temples. In the evening return to Tokyo by railway and to your hotel by Metro. If you would like we are happy to make dining recommendations and reservations for you in the evening.

Arrival in Nagano | 28 August 2015

In the morning, you will be transferred to the train station and depart Tokyo to Nagano via JR Rail (first class tickets) From here you will take a short one-hour local train to Yudanaka Station (these tickets are general tickets as there is no first class train category on most Japan local trains).

Upon your arrival to Yudanaka Station, your guide will meet you at the train station and transfer you to your hotel, the incredible Shibuonosen Kokuya Ryokan in the famous onsen town of Shibu.

After checking into your hotel, your guide will then take you to visit Jigokudani Monkey Park and Matsumoto Castle. Using a private chartered vehicle to help you explore these sites (as well as any of Nagano’s famous sites) as you see fit. For the below two sites we have included your admission tickets (for other sites please pay locally).

Jigokudani Monkey ParkFirst, enjoy an adventure from Nagano into Jigokudani or “Hell Valley“, so named because of the large presence of geothermal springs. This is the home of the Japan’s fabled snow monkeys. Reaching the main park, where the monkeys wander, is a medium-paced journey with a mile of hill-hiking up to the Monkey’s main habitat. Upon arrival to the park, you will watch the Macaques cavort down the hill with rough and tumble play. As you get to the hot springs of the park, however, they will suddenly become far more relaxed as they soak in the bubbling waters.

Please note this is NOT a zoo and the monkeys are completely wild, giving you a chance for an up-close and personal encounter with Japanese nature.

Matsumoto CastleRoughly 1.5 hours by car from Yudanaka, Matsumoto has flourished as a castle town since the 16th century. In addition to its historical and cultural heritage Matsumoto is surrounded by mountains and is acclaimed for its beautiful views. Hiking and climbing locations in the mountains are readily accessible by local bus transportation. To the west the Japan Alps rise to heights of 3,000 meters, and are known as "The Roof of Japan". To visit Matsumoto Castle one of the most complete and beautiful among Japan's original castles. It is a good example of a so called "hirajiro", a castle built on the plain rather than on a hill or mountain. The castle is also called Crow Castle because of its black walls and spreading wings.

Arrival in Kyoto | 29 August 2015

In the morning, you will be transferred to Nagano Station for your JR Train to Kyoto (this train will stop in Nagoya and you will need to transfer once to another train, this will be done on your own with clear instructions from our office. The journey time will be roughly four hours).

Upon arrival to your Kyoto Station, you will be met by your VIP guide and privately transferred to your Kyoto Hotel, the stunning Ritz Carlton Kyoto. As Kyoto is quite navigable by bus and metro you can either explore the city sights with your guide locally or use the private coach, which we have set up for your party. (If you wish to amend out your private bus for touring today and tomorrow will be providing your party Kansai Thru Passes for your public transportation within Kyoto and Nara).

As with Tokyo & Nagano, please pay any entrance fees for your party or your guide locally should they apply.

To keep the day interesting for adults and the young ones alike, the following sights were carefully selected as what we recommend for your time in Kyoto. Of course, in no way are you required to follow the route below. We will be arranging lunch for you today while you tour at a charming Kyoto eatery.

Shoren-in TempleShoren-in temple is one of the five Monzeki temples of the Tendai sect in Kyoto; the head priests at these temples originally belonged to the imperial family. The atmosphere at the temple is solemn and peaceful, similar to the ambiance of the Imperial Palace; this kind of an environment can only be found at Shoren-in temple. Children enjoy the bamboo forest, the carp pond and ringing the Temple Bell (but only once!)

Then explore World Heritage Kiyomizudera, one of the oldest and most important temples of the city, built high on massive stilts in the eastern foothills, with fantastic views of the city. Be sure to enter Jishu Shrine, where it’s said if you successfully walk between a pair of “love stones” with your eyes closed, you’ll find true love. The Meal Plan for Today

Walk the narrow staircases and paths lined with shops and galleries to the Gion, filled with shops, restaurants and teahouses where Geisha and Maiko entertain.

Nishiki MarketThis is Kyoto’s largest traditional food market. While modern food shops and souvenir shops are starting to move in, there are still enough traditional shops to give you a glimpse of what a traditional shotengai (shopping street) must have looked like. You’ll find all the major ingredients of traditional Kyoto cuisine on display here: tsukemono (Japanese pickles), fresh tofu, Kyo-yasai (Kyoto vegetables), wagashi (Japanese sweets), tea, and fresh fish and shellfish. Some shops sell takeaway food like skewers of yakitori or sashimi, and a few sit down restaurants can be found amid the shops.

Toei Kyoto Studio Park the only theme park in Japan where you can observe the filming of period dramas (jidaigeki films). Here you can walk freely around the Toei Kyoto Studio film set. This set depicts a street from the Edo period, and is used to shoot more than 200 films per year. Enjoy the atmosphere of ancient Japan by taking in a ninja show maybe even dressing up as a geisha or samurai.

We will of course be happy to show you some of Kyoto’s modern side as well; dining will typically be in local venues such as Izakayas and local ‘one-food-style’ restaurants (such as Teppinyaki, Yakitori, Yakiniku, etc….).

We will return to the hotel at 5:30 PM we are happy to make dining recommendations or reservations for you in the evening. Of course we HIGHLY RECOMMEND you reserve restaurants with us before your arrival to Japan.

Kyoto – Nara – Kyoto | 30 August 2015

Today you may choose to explore any of the destinations near Kyoto. Our recommendation would be to explore the great cultural center of Nara (only an hour away by private car, which we have arranged for your party to and from this wonderful destination!). We will be arranging lunch for you today while you tour at a charming Nara eatery. Please note if you wish you could just as easily spend the day in Kyoto exploring the city with your VIP guide.

Todai-jiLiterally meaning ‘Eastern Great Temple’, Todai-ji is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and rightly so. Until1998, it was the world’s largest wooden building (it’s since been surpassed by the Odate Baseball Stadium), and although destroyed twice by fire, the current version has managed to survive unscathed since 1709. The Buddha itself, the largest bronze Buddha in the world, was cast in eight sections over three years. The completed statue measures 49ft, and its making nearly bankrupted the country and depleted Japan of every last ounce of bronze. The temple now serves as the headquarters of the Kegon sect of Buddhism, which incorporates aspects of the more popular Shingon sect. As you enter the complex, you’ll pass through the Nandaimon, or Great South Gate. The two figures, measuring 28 feet in height, are known as “Nio;” one open-mouthed (Agyo) and one closed-mouthed (Ungyo) in the traditional style. Nandaimon gained considerable fame in the US after the release of John Wayne’s The Barbarian at the Gate, although it was meant to signify the gates to the city. Many visitors like to try their luck with a pillar near the giant Buddha in which there is a hole the same size as the Daibutsu's nostril. A successful passage through the nostril is said to guarantee enlightenment in one’s next life.2011 saw the opening of the new Todai-ji Museum, full of temple treasures, religious art, and objects of deep cultural significance. There are several comparatively large statues of the Buddha, as well as rotating exhibitions on specific, generally Buddhism-oriented themes.

Kasuga Shrine (Kasuga Taisha) As subtle are the hues of Todai-ji with its raw wood and bronze, Kasuga represents the opposite end of the spectrum, announcing its presence in brilliant orange and green. The official shrine of the Fujiwara Clan, Japan’s most powerful family during the Nara and Heian periods (710-1185), the main structure was rebuilt every 20 years in the manner of Ise Shrine for centuries, but the

practice stopped at the end of the Edo period (1868). In addition to the Kasuga Taisha, there aredozens of secondary shrines scattered throughout the surrounding woods. The twelve on the immediate path beyond the main complex represent the twelve lucky gods, each with a singular gift such as fortuitous matchmaking and marriage. Also nearby is the Kasug aTaisha Shinen Manyo Botanical Garden, home to over 250 species of plants all described in the Manyoshu, an ancient collection of Japanese poems dating to the Nara period.

Nara Park (perfect for kids& the young at heart!)A lovely park in which to stroll between temple visits, Nara Park is best known for the herds of wild (though very, very tame) deer milling about somewhat indolently. The deer were considered divine for centuries after one of the gods of Kasuga Shrine claimed to have ridden on the back of a white deer. From then on, killing one of these sacred creatures was punishable by death; although the last recorded offense took place in 1637. The deer were summarily stripped of their divinity in 1946, and are now simply designated National Treasures. And very well fed treasures they are; visitors purchase tens of thousands of packets of shikasenbei or “deer crackers” every year to feed the demanding wee beasties.

In the evening we will return to Kyoto by your private car (chartered shuttle bus) and are happy to make any dining arrangements for your party.

Reviews | What clients say

MJ planned an excellent leisure trip for me to Japan and China in July-August 2014. The trip was 2 weeks and included all hotels, both long haul and short hall flights, trains, local transportation, dinner reservations each night, and full day guides in each city. Cities visited included Tokyo, Kyoto, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The trip was planned and executed flawlessly. There was not one detail, reservation, travel arrangement that was miscommunicated or out of order. For this to occur on a two week, complex, international itinerary speaks volumes to the quality, reliability, and thoroughness of Marc and Mandarin Journeys. The guides in each city superb and highly knowledgeable re. the local sights, culture, languages, and transportation. Stayed in a older courtyard house/hotel in Beijing (Hans Royal Garden) and 300 year old Ryokan in Kyoto. The trip was thoroughly enjoyed. MJ even arranged vintage motorcycles with side cars as the transportation from central Beijing to a non touristy, less travelled part of the Great Wall. I highly recommend Mandarin Journeys for anyone that wants a non touristy, comprehensive trip to the Far East

Mr Steve Randich – CIO Finra, former CIO Citigroup

Our family recently used Mandarin Journeys for a 3-week/5 destinations trip to China and Thailand, and we highly recommend them. They were attentive and responsive during the planning process, which for us involved multiple changes along the way, and they helped us manage everything seamlessly. They designed a premium, customized program with activities suited to us and expert guides who completely enhanced the experience. And they were in touch throughout to ensure things went according to plan. They took the time to understand what wewere looking for and delivered beyond our expectations. I'm sure we will be "repeat" customers.

1) To make a booking you must complete Booking Form and pay a non-refundable deposit of up to 35% of your selected travel arrangements (minimum USD $100 or equivalent in other currency or $300 if a Yangtze cruise is part of the confirmed itinerary). We will then invoice you for the remainder of the cost, which you must pay not later than 6 weeks before departure. If you book less than 8 weeks before departure, full payment must be made on booking. The booking is not accepted and no contract shall exist between us until the date shown on the confirmation issued by the Company. Notification of cancellation must be made to the Company in writing and will be effective upon receipt. Exceptions to the payment conditions above may be granted on a case by case basis.

2) Bookings made will not be deemed accepted until we have received a signed booking form in our office by fax or email and we have issued a confirmation. If a signed booking form is not received within 10 days of the direct booking being made, the booking will be cancelled, any paid deposit will be forfeit. Direct bookings made by credit card less than 8 weeks before departure (i.e. when full payment is due on booking) will be subject to the cancellation conditions in clause 4 below and clients will be deemed to have read and accepted our booking conditions regardless of whether a booking form has been received in our office.

3) If you cancel your booking after you have paid in full the following cancellation charges will be made: between 43 and 56 days before departure: 40% of the holiday cost between 29 and 42 days before departure: 60% of the holiday cost between 15 and 28 days before departure: 80% of the holiday cost 14 days or less before departure (or fail to join the holiday): 100% of the holiday cost These dates refer to the date we receive written notification of your cancellation, signed by at least one of the individuals listed on the booking form. Cancellations notifications must be clearly dated, signed and sent by registered post. Failure to comply can result in 100% cancellation charges. We strongly recommend you to take out insurance against irrecoverable cancellation costs.

4) If you are prevented from travelling, you may transfer your booking to another person provided they meet all the requirements relating to that holiday. A transfer fee of $100 will be payable, or $180 if the transfer is less than four weeks before departure. Additional costs such as non-transferable airline tickets and permit fees may also be payable. Should you transfer your booking to another person, you will both be jointly and severally liable for payment of the holiday price and other associated expenses. We require a written transfer notification for all transfers, clearly dated and signed by transferor and transferee.

5) If you do not pay the balance of your holiday cost by the due date of 6 weeks before departure your booking may be terminated and any monies paid may be forfeited.

6) We will let you know as soon as we can if, we are forced to significantly alter or cancel your holiday. In these circumstances you can choose one of the following options.

a) accept our offer of a replacement holiday of lower quality (if available) and we will refund the difference in cost; or

b) accept our offer of a replacement holiday of equivalent or higher quality (if available); or

c) ask us for a refund of the money you have paid.

Your decision about which alternative you accept must be made as soon as possible after we notify you. We strongly advise you not to incur any non-refundable incidental expenses, e.g. for visas or flights, before we send you final confirmation of your itinerary. This is because scheduled airlines regularly vary their timetables. We shall however endeavor to send you your final confirmation between 21 and 16 days prior to departure.

Changes in all of these items may be made at any time and we will notify you of any changes that we become aware of as soon as we are reasonably able to do so. For every holiday booking we create a detailed confirmation voucher which contains the up-to-date definitive information about the booked holiday, and which will be sent on to you by email, fax or post. If after reading these documents you feel you have misunderstood what is included in the price, or the nature of the holiday, you may cancel your booking without penalty and we will refund any monies paid to us (except for initial deposits, if any). Such cancellations will only be allowed during the week following our sending the confirmation voucher to you, and will not be allowed if your booking is made less than 8 weeks before departure, when you should ensure that you are fully aware of the contents of the holiday itinerary before booking. The information and conditions relating to your holiday (and extensions/options where applicable) contained in the confirmation voucher will be deemed to be part of the contract, and you should therefore read them carefully. Should there be a discrepancy between the information on the website or any other publication and the confirmation voucher, the information in the confirmation voucher supersedes any other published information and will be considered the most up-to-date and accurate.

9) Any information or advice provided by the Company on matters such as permits, visas, vaccinations, climate, clothing, baggage, special equipment, etc. is given in good faith but without responsibility on the part of the Company, and the passenger accepts responsibility for obtaining any necessary visas and travel documents required for the holiday.

10) If any significant changes to the holiday have to be made before departure, we undertake to inform you, and you are entitled to the options detailed in clause 6 above. A ‘significant change’ does not include a change of carrier, transport or named accommodation, but is normally considered a change of more than 24 hours (12 hours for holidays of 10 days’ duration or less) in departure or return timings, a change of Chinese domestic departure airport or a major itinerary re-routing.

Pro rata refunds will be given for services not utilized wherever possible at the Company’s discretion. It is a fundamental condition of joining any of the holidays described in this brochure that you accept this flexibility, and acknowledge that delays and alterations and their results, such as inconvenience, discomfort, or disappointment, are possible: we will always endeavor to provide suitable alternative arrangements. If it is impossible to make alternative arrangements or if a passenger is unable, or does not choose for good reason, to complete an itinerary outlined for a holiday, the Company is not liable to supply alternative itineraries, excursions, accommodations, services or staff for the period when the client is not present with the group, but in these circumstances we will arrange transport back to your point of departure if you wish.

12) On any China holiday it is necessary that you abide by the authority of the leader or guide, who represents the company. If you are affected by any condition, medical or otherwise, that might affect your or other people’s enjoyment of the holiday you must advise us of this at the time of booking or risk immediate termination of your travel arrangements without any liability on our part.

13) Before you come on the holiday you must be covered by insurance, which must include adequate cover for baggage, medical expenses and the cost of repatriation, should you become too ill to continue, including helicopter rescue and air ambulance. If you join the holiday without adequate insurance you may not be allowed to continue on the holiday, with no right of refund.

14) Our responsibility does not commence until the appointed time and place in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau as stipulated in the confirmation voucher. We shall not be responsible for any additional expenses incurred by you to meet up on time and at the designated place as stipulated in the Confirmation voucher. If you are not satisfied with their response and you feel your enjoyment of the holiday is likely to be significantly affected, you should notify our regional manager and we will do our best to resolve the problem. If at the end of the holiday, you feel your complaint has not been properly dealt with, we shall try and agree a settlement with you, but you must first notify us of your complaint in writing within 35 days of your scheduled date of return. Please note we only deal with complaints via letter, telephone or email, and not in person.

16) We are responsible to you for the proper performance of our obligations under the contract irrespective of whether those obligations are provided directly by us, or by third party service providers engaged by us acting within the proper course of their employment. We are liable to you for any damage caused to you by our failure to perform the contract or by our improper performance of the contract, unless that failure is:

17) In any event, you are strongly advised to insure yourself against any possible risk that may occur and in particular to ensure that you have sufficient insurance in respect of dependent relatives. You are required to carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested by company employees or suppliers. Except in instances of personal injury or death, where the Company is found to be liable for damages in respect of its failure to carry out the contract, the maximum amount of such damages, compensation and loss of enjoyment will normally, but not necessarily, be limited to three times the basic holiday price shown on the invoice.
