An example of a current area of research in theInstitute of Irish Studies is Head of Department,Dr Diane Urquharts study of the history of Irishdivorce. This is the first full-scale investigationinto Irish divorce. Whilst divorce was unavailablein independent Ireland from 1922 to 1996, fromthe eighteenth to the early 20th century Irishcitizens could divorce by the means of a privateparliamentary bill.

This was a costly, complex, lengthy and publicprocedure and, with different grounds ofdivorce for both men and women, it attractedconsiderable press coverage. From the mid19th century, Ireland became increasingly outof step with other areas of the British Empirein retaining such a system of divorce andDr Urquharts research seeks to explain thisposition as well as assess its impact on thoseexperiencing marital strife. This research informsthe specialist Irish womens history modulewhich Dr Urquhart convenes in the Institute.
