The Irish Wolfhound: King of Dogs and Dog of Kings by Michael Russell

The Irish Wolfhound is known as the King of Dogs. It's stately grace and long easy loping strides are deceiving, for it has sufficient strength and power to hunt and kill a wolf. The jaws of the dog are large and punishing, the massive shoulders and rear should have good musculature, a dog that is in condition is an impressive sight.

Illustrations portraying the ancient Irish Wolfhound have been found in Greece and Cyprus, where the continental Celts had their home. It is said that they took their dogs with them when they went to Ireland around 1500 B.C. They were as prized as valuable possessions. It is said that King John gave a gift of an Irish wolfhound to the Prince of Wales in the thirteenth century. This dog ‘Gelert’ was immortalized in the poem by William Robert Spencer. Hence the phrase: "King of Dogs and Dog of Kings", which is a popular slogan of the Irish Wolfhound fancier. These dogs were used by the Irish to hunt wolves, wild boar and deer. It is a historical fact that for over 100 years Ireland has had no wild wolves and this has been attributed to the hunting skill of the Irish Wolfhound.

The Irish Wolfhound has a wiry stiff coat and a bearded face with great long jaws. The ears are small, not hanging close to the face as in many hounds. The body should be strong and deep of chest. The dogs are quite tall, with a minimum height of 31 inches for a male and 28 for a female. The dog is longer in the back but the length should come from the rib cage and not the loin. The impression when looking at the dog in profile is one of tremendous "depth" to the body. The front shoulders should have a good "layback" and the rear legs be well angulated, as this will allow for greater freedom of movement and length of stride.

The character of the Irish wolfhound should be stable and docile; this is far too large a dog to allow for any poor temperament. A good disposition is typical of this "gentle giant" and seldom will one find an Irish Wolfhound that is not a perfect gentleman.

On behalf of the Irish Wolfhound Club Inc New Zealand I wish to welcome everyone to our Championship Show For 2017. Our Judge this year is Mr Wayne Lewis from NSW “Dallaroo Kerry Blue Terriers” I would like to take this opportunity to thank the, committee and volunteers who have worked hard to bring this show together. A big thank you also goes to our show day officials, Show Manager, Show Secretary, Ring Steward (Kim Smith from Christchurch) and our Photographer, for giving up their own time to help out our club on the day. Once again thank you to Ricoh Copiers who have taken care of our printing requirements, on the day and throughout the year. Thank you to all our exhibitors and their dogs for participating in this show. Without you all we would not have a show. I trust you will all have a good day. A little about our Judge: Mr Wayne Lewis

Resume Of this year’s Judge for our Championship Show Mr Wayne Lewis – NSW Australia Kennel Name: Dallaroo Licensed to Judge: Hound, Terrier and NON Sporting Groups FCI Licensed to Judge: Terriers, Dachshunds, Spitz and Primitive types, Scenthounds and Sighthounds My involvement with showing and breeding dogs commenced in 1969 thanks to a Birthday present. Although my first breed was a Golden Retriever soon developed a strong interest towards Terriers and in particular Kerry Blue Terriers. In 1975 I purchased my first Kerry Blue Terrier whilst it only being a pet it certainly stimulated my ever increasing attraction towards the Kerry Blue breed and Terriers in general. Under the Dallaroo kennel prefix I have breed over 100 Kerry Blue Terrier Champions which can be found in all four corners of the world. Dallaroo Kennels have produced a number of notable show Champions including Australia’s first and second Grand Champion Terriers which were Kerry Blue Terriers. Over the years I have also breed and shown various other breeds to their Australian Championship eg Keeshond, Lhasa Apso’s & Dobermans. I have also been actively involved with show handling to the following Terrier breeds: Airedale Terrier, American Staffordshire Terriers, Fox Terrier (Smooth & Wire), Lakeland Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terriers. I continue to maintain a keen interest in all these breeds. I have also remained actively involved in the Non Sporting Group having enjoyed handling Dalmatians along with Toy & Standard Poodles. I have had a long term interest in many other breeds such as French Bulldog, German Spitz, (handled the first 3 imported into Australia) also Affenpincher & Italian Greyhound breeds. I have a long term involvement with Dachshund’s Standard & Mini & have also handled many to BIS wins Afghan Hounds, Basenji’s & Whippets. Currently I hold executive positions on several Terrier Specialty Clubs including the Airedale Terrier Association of New South Wales, British Terrier Club New South Wales. I am an active committee member of the Dogs NSW (Royal New South Wales Canine Council) Public Relations events committee. I am currently licensed to Judge ALL Terriers, Hounds, And NON Sporting & Group Specials. Since commencing my judging career in 2003 I have judged at both Specialty and All Breeds Shows within Australia, across 6 States and Territories (New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia & Tasmania) as well Internationally in Russia, Italy, South Africa and Canada
