can also take contaminated fuel out ofvehicles on-site and can do lock-outson cars and commercials.”

No off-road repair or accident vehiclepick-up job is considered too big or toosmall, with fleet services available anda fast, efficient response guaranteed atan affordable price. A modern fleetusing the latest recovery technologywill cover any distance, with a recoveryservice from Europe included.

All recovery and repairs are carriedout by a courteous, punctual and fully-qualified team of engineers, with allwork fully guaranteed in keeping withthe managing director’s totalcommitment to customer care.

It was on two faraway continents thatAlan served his apprenticeship inbreakdown / recovery work, as herecalls: “I used to work for an Americancompany down in Australia and I didrepairs and HGV recovery for them. Ialso spent some time in the US andwas involved in garage repairs /recovery work there as well. When Icame home to Ireland, it seemed likethe obvious line of work to get involvedin.

“I started off doing work with cars –recovery and repairs - on a very smallscale. It was just one man, one truck inthe early days. Soon, I took on asecond man and we gave a very goodservice, so demand increased. Weworked hard and gradually thebusiness grew.

“Today, I employ seven lads between

part-time and full-time and we run afleet of ten recovery vehicles. Themajority of these would be tilt andslides, with crew cabs that can carry upto seven passengers.”

Ongoing investment has been centralto Alan Graham’s success and, bycontinuously reinvesting money backinto his company, he ensures that hehas a modern fleet capable of carryingout the most complicated jobs with aminimum of fuss.

“We recently added a 7530 JohnDeere with a 50K gearbox on her forthe off-road recovery of HGVs. It hasan eight-tonne blade and a 25-tonnewinch. Last winter, we were able tohandle a lot of very awkward jobs withthis tractor and it is a real asset to thecompany. We also have two newScanias, a Mercedes and a Toyota 4x4.

“We can lift any commercial vehiclefrom six tonnes up to the heaviest HGV,working nationwide for both insurancecompanies and the actual hauliersthemselves.”

Needless to say, no two days in thisline of work are ever the same. “Fromone minute to the next, you don’t knowwhat you’re going to be doing,” Alanconfirms. “But we are always preparedand ready for any scenario. Every dayis different. You could be on a recoveryjob or a transportation job to anotherpart of the country or somebody couldbe locked out of their car. You meet alot of nice people out on the road andyou get to help them out, which is

rewarding.”Alan is a hands-on MD, who is either

out on the road himself or monitoringthings from the office, where everythingcan be accessed instantly on-screenwith the mere touch of a button. AlanGraham Recovery Services uses thelatest Navman GPS tracking systems.

“Mobile phones were just coming onthe market when I set the company upand the coverage was very bad, butthings have changed dramatically andnow everybody can be contactedinstantly. The strides in technologyhave been amazing and we haveembraced these.

“We are experiencing growth thewhole time – maybe not as fast as we’dideally like due to diesel prices – butwe’re gaining ground and can’tcomplain,” he concludes.

The event organisers Kevin Mulqueen and Colin Hegarty havemoved venue and this year’s show will be held in the CavanEquestrian Centre on the June Bank Holiday weekend. Following

the success of last year’s event, Kevin and Colin have ensured that theshow will be more appealing to wider audience with many more attractionsincluded.

The timing of the show is also a big bonus as hauliers will not feel thatthey have to rush home, given that it is a Bank Holiday weekend.

The spirit of competition that manifests itself at these shows can be asintense as any sporting contest. The fevered brow of competitors justbefore the judging is announced and the inevitable post mortems that takeplace later are all part and parcel of these events.

The banter that accompanies these events is an essential ingredient. Sotoo is the praise and admiration that is heaped on the various winners. And where there are winners, there must be losers and the promise tocome back next year with a winning entry.

A NEW COVERED VENUE

Kevin speaks to us about the 2012 Full of the Pipe and explains theirreasons for moving from Athlone IT.

“We decided that due to the unpredictable weather in Ireland, we neededa venue that was indoors, but to find one that was capable of housing somany trucks over the one weekend was going to be a problem,” saidKevin.

“I was at an event in Ennis when I asked a lad was there an equestriancentre in the country that could facilitate us and he immediately said ‘yesin Cavan town’.

“As soon as we saw the place, we were very impressed. The venue is ona 25 acre site, with the most of that inside, which allows truckers bringtheir trucks in the night before and they won’t have to be washing themagain the next morning.”

Kevin admits that the venue also allows more Northern hauliers to attend

Full of thePipe:bigger andbetterYes folks, its back, the Full of the Pipe TruckShow is heading for Cavan on June 3rd and4th.

he feels that logistically it is ideally place to host the event.

“It’s a top class facility, simple as that and the location was key for usas lads from across the border will have easy access to the show.”

BROADENING THE APPEAL

Kevin revealed that after the success of last year’s show; the interestin this year’s has increased considerably, thus leading to the biggervenue.

“There is a greater interest in this year’s show and the amount ofpeople contacting us looking for information is unreal. We are not justcatering for the truckers this year though, as car enthusiasts will also becatered for along with all the family.

“We decided to introduce the elite cars as an added feature and thisshould attract a number of car enthusiasts, who normally wouldn’tattend truck shows. But this is a full on truck festival and one that wehope to see many truckers attend. So why not come along and enjoythe weekend’s fun.

“There will be many trade stands on site over the weekend also, themajority of which will be catering for the haulage industry, while therewill be others for the cars and even the children.

“There are a lot more attractions for the kids too, like face painting, amusements, magic shows and that sort of thing. The theme for theweekend is Country & Western and we will have a live band playing.”

IRELAND’S BEST SCANIA 143

Truckers are not requested to register for the event on June 2nd andit will be on a first come, first served basis. There are new categoriesadded to the show, meaning that there are over 20 awards up for grabs.

“The main event will be to find the Ireland’s best Scania 143. This willbe a very interesting category and there has been loads of interest in it.The 143 is the most popular truck in Ireland and this is our way ofhonouring it.”

GENEROUS SPONSORS

Of course, there would be no show with the support of the sponsorsand to this end, Full of the Pipe is very fortunate as Boreman Lighting, are the main sponsors, while Moran Signs, Spa Transport and theCavan Crystal Hotel are also sponsoring the event.

“Without the sponsors, we wouldn’t have a show, so I’m grateful tothem and the many people that have helped out in organising theevent. I’m not going to name them individually as I’m sure I’ll leavesomeone out, but they know who they are.”

For truckers looking to stay over, the Cavan Crystal is offering aspecial deal for anyone attending the event.

CHARITY SUPPORT

This year’s show will see part of the money raised from the show goto a worthwhile charity. “Last year, we gave some of the proceeds to theBernardo’s Children’s Charity and we will be doing the same this year,so we ask everyone to come along and support the event.”

No doubting where theplace to be fortruckers is this June

Bank Holiday weekend! Fullof the Pipe is back andCavan Equestrian Centrewill play host to the 2012event on Sunday June 3rd(11am – 7pm) and MondayJune 4th (11am – 3pm), withregistrations taking place ona first-come, first-servedbasis on the Saturday, from2pm until midnight. It’s goingto be a truly spectaculartrucking extravaganza andregular visitors GerryMcQuaid of DunsanyHaulage and Shane Kelly ofKieran Kelly Haulage intendto offer their support again.

Irish Trucker spoke to bothmen during the countdown tothe show to get theirperspective on a show that’srapidly gaining momentum.

GERRY MCQUAID, DUNSANY HAULAGE

Meath man Gerry isparticularly looking forwardto the craic: “It’s a greatsocial gathering for truckers

and you get to meet a lot oflads … lads you’d meet at allthe shows. It’s always nice tocatch up with them again.

“Shows like this are veryscarce now - you’d be luckyto have three or four inIreland in a year – so wehave to support them. Itwould be a disaster if therewere no more showsanymore; it’s a greatweekend for us. The Full ofthe Pipe has taken over fromBoot to the Headlight asprobably the main show nowand it’s a very good socialevent. There’s also a showdown in Fermoy, CountyCork and another one upnorth and we try to go tothem all. We’ll definitely be inCavan in June.”

Gerry has collected anumber of prizes at Full ofthe Pipe over the years andhe’ll probably be incontention again in 2012.“We tend to do well enoughat every show,” hecomments. “I think we tookhome two prizes last year, which was good. But the

Trucker’seye viewAt the end of the day, Full of the Pipe is allabout the truckers. It’s the hauliers whomake the show a success; it’s theirparticipation, enthusiasm and support thatrenders the truck shows worthwhile. standard is very high. It’sgetting harder to win anaward. Lads are lookingafter their trucks better nowthan ever before…”

The economic crash hasleft everybody withconsiderably less money intheir pockets but Irishhauliers haven’t lost theirpride and that’s whyvehicles – not just at showsbut also on the road everyday – are generallymaintained in tip-topcondition.

“In the current climate, lads haven’t money to bespending on new trucksand a lot of them wouldn’thave much to spend ontheir existing trucks either, but they are looking afterthem all the same, eventhough there’s obviouslynot the same money beingspent as there was back inthe boom times.”

How many trucks willGerry bring to Full of thePipe 2012? “We’ll bring twoor three – probably twoVolvos and the T-cabScania that’s known as‘The Hunky Dory Truck’. Itwon two prizes for us lastyear and I think it did thesame the year before,” theproprietor of DunsanyHaulage notes. “Sure we’llmake a weekend of it andwe’ll have a few drinks onthe first night and see howit goes.”

It has developed into agood family occasion, too, with plenty of attractions foreveryone. Will theMcQuaid clan be taggingalong, then? “They wentdown to the show in 2010and to be honest the truckscene isn’t their scene,”Gerry reveals. “This year Ithink the organisers do

seem to be going more intothe whole family thing andthey are trying to appeal tomore age groups, but I’dsay my crew will be stayingat home!”

Gerry has nothing butpraise for Kevin Mulqueenand Colin Hegarty, whosework in organising theshow every year isenormous: “It’s veryprofessionally organised.I’ll tell you one thing:something like this is veryhard to pull off and Icertainly wouldn’t like to bethe one organising it! It’s aprofessional as you couldpossibly get and you haveto give the lads greatcredit.

“This year’s event will bebetter too with the indoorarena. The weather hasbeen a big factor in thepast but we’ll be immune tothat this time. There wasan awful lot of rain last yearand that turned a lot ofpeople away.”

Over the years, Gerry hastravelled to truck shows allover the island – Wexford,Cork, Belfast, Ennis,Athlone etc. He’s lookingforward to seeing whatCavan has to offer as avenue. He’s also lookingforward to having a look atthe trade stands etc. andseeing what innovationsare on display this year:

“Of course you pick upbits and pieces and you gettalking to other people inthe industry, who areperhaps involved indifferent aspects oftrucking, and you learnabout life in other areas. It’s interesting to get a viewof the bigger picture ofwhat’s going on in haulagein Ireland.

“While there will be a lotof the same peopleturning up at these showsyear in, year out, you willalways meet new peopleand learn from peoplewith a fresh perspectiveon things. You’ll meet ladsfrom different areas of theindustry, from differentparts of the country andyou might be able to put abit of work their way – orthey might be able to giveyou a bit of work. That’swhat this weekend is allabout, that’s the sort ofspirit that exists betweenthe people who attend. We work together and tryto help each other out andshare a bit of work if wecan.”

Gerry had been drivingtrucks for 16 years now. He’s been out on his ownfor five years now, havingbeen part of a partnershipfor two years prior to that.Dunsany Haulageprovides a premiumgroupage service (fullloads, part loads, backloads, single pallets, hazardous materials etc.),with a fleet of four articsand two vans on the roadat present.

SHANE KELLY,KIERAN KELLY

HAULAGE

Shane Kelly, transportmanager with sand andgravel specialist KieranKelly Haulage in Ennis, isanother man who lovesthe Full of the Pipe show, although the venue is alittle bit further away forhim this year as the roundtrip from Cavan to Clarewill be a costly one.“Athlone suited us better,as it was only 90 minutesaway,” he says. Shane

took the family company’sflagship Iveco to the showin the midlands last year, while his brother PJ drovethe old Hino. “We got acouple of plaques out of it,”he recalls.

“I’m sure the 2012 eventis going to be another greatsuccess. We’re hoping tomake it, even if it’s going tocost a bit more to bring thetwo trucks. It’s a greatweekend but it’s a pity youhave to think aboutjustifying bringing twotrucks to Cavan and backwith no loads in them, especially when things areso quiet in the industry atthe moment.

“Dad doesn’t mind usgoing up to it but it woulddefinitely be more practicalif we were working awayfull steam ahead, whichisn’t the case, unfortunately. We havesome busy days but thereare quiet days too.

“I enjoyed the show lastyear in Athlone. I stayed upin the truck for the threenights and it was goodcraic. The lads from theNorth are good craic and itwould be nice to meet upwith those lads again.

“It’s a great show and I’mhoping to make it.”

The harsh realities of thelife of a modern trucker arenever far away but Full ofthe Pipe 2012 is on its wayand will provide somewelcome respite fromthese worries andconcerns. Gerry McQuaidwill definitely be there …we’ve a sneaky feelingShane and PJ Kelly willmake it too. Some thingssimply cannot be resisted!

Last year Irish Trucker magazine interviewed ColdcutLogistics following their success at the Fleet transport awards. Since then, Coldcut Logistics havecontinued to expand their business model and service their major customers in the consumer foodsindustry. Coldcut Logistics is now a major player inthe refrigerated transport sector, and the company’sdrive to continuously improve systems, quality controls and ultimately provide better quality serviceto their customers in the market place has seenColdcut become ISO accredited in April 2012.

“We have always had quality procedures in place andan ethos of high standards, however we felt that theISO process would take our existing control infrastructure to the optimum level. We also wantedour existing customer base and any potential futurecustomers to know that we wanted to operate at thehighest level, and be certified on that basis. The ISOaccreditation process began in early 2011, and wasdeveloped through a number of managed stages overthe next 14 months. Changing processes can be anarduous task at the best of times, however a combination of hard work, team effort and determination prevailed and we were finally accredited in early April.”

Coldcut continued in their success during 2012 asthey were shortlisted for the logistics company of theyear at the Irish Logistics & Transport Awards 2012.

One of the first things tostand out is the easeof access. Located on

the outskirts of Cavan town, easily accessible from alldirections, Cavan Equestrian,Horse Marketing & EventCentre is the biggest andbusiest equestrian centre inthe country. It may berenowned for showjumpingand all other equestrianevents, with proven successin organising and runninginternational performancehorse and pony sales, but it isalso becoming increasinglypopular as an events centre.

12,000 SQ. METRES OFINDOOR CAPACITY

One of the real draws of the2012 Full of the Pipe is that itwill take place indoors. With12,000 square metres ofindoor space available (as

well as outdoor areas), theweather issues that plaguedprevious Full of the Pipes hasbeen put to bed for once andfor all.

About five years ago, majorre-development transformedCavan Equestrian, HorseMarketing & Event Centreinto a versatile venue forhosting all sorts of events –large scale or small scale, concerts or exhibitions, indoor or outdoor. Theaforementioned 12,000square metres capacitycomprises three arenas allunder one roof: Arena Onehas 3,888 square metres offloor space as well as threebalconies; Arena Two boasts1,375 square metres; andArena Three also has twomore balconies as well as2,670 square metres ofspace.

Equestrian, HorseMarketing & Event Centrehas played host to concertsby the likes of KennyRogers, Christy Moore andJedward as well as weddingfairs, a military vehicleshow, farm machineryshows, a modified car show,an ideal home show etc.

THE MOVE TO CAVAN

In every conceivable way,Cavan Equestrian, HorseMarketing & Event Centresounds like the perfectpartner for Full of the Pipe –so how did the 2012 eventend up being staged here?“Kevin [Mulqueen, organiser] contacted me tosay they were interested inusing the Centre and wetook it from there,” recallsgeneral manager StuartClarke.

“I believe he hadpreviously ran the event inEnnis Equestrian Centre,

but they then moved toAthlone IT but the badweather hampered theshow.

“The great thing about ourfacility is that we can run theshow indoors so theweather would have noeffect. We have three largeindoor halls and the wholeshow will be staged insideand that’s a huge positivefor any event such as this. Ithink that was one of theorganisers’ mainconsiderations, but we’realso in a good location hereand have plenty ofexperience of hostingevents of this nature.”

A BIG ULSTERSUPPORT PREDICTED

Stuart is optimistic that Fullof the Pipe 2012 has themakings of a massivesuccess: “I’d say it’s goingto be a very successfulshow,” he adds. “There hasbeen a huge interest in it inthe weeks and monthsrunning up to the event andthere’s a big truckingfraternity in Northern Irelandwho will be coming intoCavan to attend, as well asvisitors from all over Ireland.I think it could develop intoa good thing.”

THE EQUESTRIAN SIDEOf course, horses are at

the core of activity at thisvenue. Cavan Horse

Marketing Centre hostsapproximately 25 sales peryear from performance bredfoals up to showjumpers plusregistered Irish draught andregistered Connemara ponysales. In addition to what haspreviously been mentioned, the superb facilities include450 permanent stables;indoor and outdoor (all-weather) arenas; andsaddlery and equestrianclothing shops.

Purchasers travel to CavanEquestrian Centre from allover Ireland, the UK,Scandinavia, Belgium,Switzerland, Holland,France, the USA, etc.

The Centre hosts some ofthe largest showjumpingevents in Ireland and hasalso been chosen by anumber of societies /associations to stage theirmajor equine eventsincluding: Northern IrelandDressage Festival; HorseSport Ireland StallionInspections; Northern IrelandWorking Hunter & ShowingFestival; Irish Pony SocietyNational Championships;National DressageC h a m p i o n s h i p s ;EquiFestival; and CobSociety

“We are the busiestshowjumping venue inIreland and there are around25 horse and pony auctionshere every year,” Stuart

confirms.

So when did the Centrestart hosting non-equestriantype events such asconcerts, shows andexhibitions? “I supposewe’ve always done it to anextent but we’ve certainlystepped it up since weexpanded the Centre in2007. We’ve held a fewmachinery shows alreadythis year, in January /February, which were verysuccessful.

“Basically, we rent thefacilities out to the organisersof the events held at CavanEquestrian, Horse Marketing& Event Centre but we alsoprovide our own expertiseand knowledge of the venueto help them run it.

“We’re just off the CavanBypass and there isconvenient access and lotsof space on site, includinghardcore car / truck parking.

“Full of the Pipe is a newventure for us and we’relooking forward to it. Itshould be a very good showand I’d like to take thisopportunity to welcome thehauliers of Ireland to ourCentre.”

Alot more going on thanusual… There’ll be aCountry & Western theme

throughout the weekend this yearand one of the main tasks facingthe judges, who have improvedcategories to work within, is to findIreland’s best Scania 143 6 x2 / 4 x2.

And new merchandising is beingmade available, to fit all sizes fromkids to adults, as well as graphicdesigns for trucks. There will alsobe model trucks on display again.

Within the spectacular confines of

Cavan Equestrian Centre, theannual Autofest (car show) is alsogoing to be worth viewing. Thenyou have all the usual stands, displays, exhibits, the trucksthemselves, the truckers, the foodand drink, the craic. A free truckwash for those taking part… Andentry is a mere €10 (free forchildren under ten). Could be thebest value to be had anywhere thisyear! (And value is so damnedscarce these days…)

The show opens to the publicfrom 11am on the Sunday. There’s

All thesmallthingsWith a major undertaking such as a truckshow, it’s the little things that make thedifference. The beauty is in the detail, asthey say. While Full of the Pipe 2012 isnaturally a truck show first and foremost, noeffort has been spared in ensuring that it’salso much more than a mere truck show.Let’s take a look at some of the extras thatwill make June Bank Holiday weekend aweekend to remember in Cavan…

so much to do and see thatliterally anybody with the slightestinterests in trucks or cars needsto be there.

AUTOFESTAs side attractions go, the

Autofest sounds particularlyappealing and organiser KevinMulqueen says it would not havebeen possible to make this partof the show come to pass withoutthe input of Darren Mangan.Speaking to Irish Truckermagazine in the run-up to theJune Bank Holiday Full of thePipe extravaganza at CavanEquestrian Centre, Kevin stated:

“The Autofest has been puttogether by Darren and he putsan unbelievable amount of workinto this, between putting up fliersand posters etc. This issomething Darren really likes andhe approaches it with greatenthusiasm. This part of theshow would simply not bepossible without his input.

“The Autofest car show hasbeen part of Full of the Pipe sinceday one. It’s something extra forthe paying public and I supposein particular for the youngergeneration to see. Darren and hisfather John have helped us outwith producing fliers etc. and weowe them a big debt of gratitudefor their help down through theyears.”

Kevin is keen to stress thatAutofest has nothing to do withboy racers. It’s a little moresophisticated than that! “There

will be a nice selection ofperformance cars and modifiedcars on display. This isn’t boyracer stuff. We’ll be exhibiting avery high standard of car and thisis an important side attractionthat we like to bring in every yearso that there is more foreverybody to see and do over thecourse of the weekend.”

How many cars does Kevinexpect to see at the indoor venuein Cavan for Full of the Pipe2012? “There will be anywherebetween 30 and 50 cars on show.We get great support from KeithStewart at Celica Ireland andalso from Alex Kenny in e36 Club[BMW series]. So we’ll have agood selection of qualityvehicles. While this is somethingwe like to include, I’d also like topoint out that Full of the Pipe isevolving more and more intobecoming a 100% truck show.”

MERCHANDISEOn the merchandising front, the

2012 event also represents ahistoric departure as theorganisers are starting to take theactual branding of the truck showmore seriously, with a new rangeof merchandise to be unveiled atthe Cavan show: “This year weare launching a range ofmerchandise to suit both adultsand kids,” Kevin confirms. “Thismerchandise can be purchasedat the show and it offers fans ofthe show a chance to show theirsupport of Full of the Pipe. We’llbe selling custom clothing and

people will be able to pick up officialFull of the Pipe t-shirts and stuff likethat. The idea is to get the name outthere and to try to keep the show in thespotlight.

“As part of this, we will also have agraphics service available to truckers, who will be able to get Full of the Pipelogos etc. put onto their truck windowson site on the day.

“Another thing is the truck modelshow, which will be held in the mainreception area.”

TEAM EFFORTKevin reiterates his appreciation of

the work done by Darren Mangan, commenting: “For Colin Hegarty andmyself, we are both delighted thatDarren has been involved and he playsa big part in this with the fliers, poster, leaflets and website. That help hasbeen absolutely vital to us.

“I’d also like to thank everybody elsewho has supported the car side of

things, getting it up and running, but atthe same time I have to stress oncemore that this is a truck show at the endof the day.

“Colin and myself put everything intothis. We will be there to help people atthe trade stands on the day but ifpeople want to sell their merchandisethey must also support the show. Itworks both ways and people have tosupport Full of the Pipe. If these showsdie, then there will be no stands and thepublic won’t buy any of themerchandise. We offer very reasonablerates and we have great support fromour sponsors, which is also very muchappreciated.”

Hosting the show in CavanEquestrian Centre represents anotherlandmark departure for the organisersand Kevin says he is very encouragedby the potential of the new venue: “I’mdelighted with the venue. I’m expectinga very positive response now thatpeople know we’re going to have an

indoor show, with 12,000 sq metres ofspace, a Country & Western theme, music and a bar and restaurant.

“There’s no need to register inadvance. Registrations will be taken onthe Saturday from 2pm until midnightand will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. I’d advise people toshow up in time to avoiddisappointment, however, as theresponse has been brilliant so far andwe’re expecting it to be a sell-out.

“We’re promoting the show all aroundIreland and the judging this year isgoing to be very good with extendedand improved categories. At the end ofthe day, the whole show revolvesaround getting that trophy up on thedash. There’s great comfort for thedrivers and the judges this year andthere will be no restrictions caused byrain or bad weather as we are indoorsin an exceptional, high-class venue.”

Couldn’t ask for much more, in allfairness.

advancement of technology, we see this as an essentialcomponent for a competent provider to the MotorIndustry.

As with vehicles in the Motor Industry, equipment in oursector is constantly changing and being updating in aneffort to service these vehicles and to cover the new legislation that is constantly being introduced. For example, the reduction of emission limits in MOT Testingin Northern Ireland and the increasing demands madeby the law for accuracy in Brake Readings. We have become very adept in these areas and the products thatwe provide to service these particular needs are of veryhigh quality and are manufactured in Europe.

We have worked very closely with our suppliers, forming successful strategic partnerships, which have had multiple mutual benefits. We have built up huge rapportwith them and they tailor their products to suit ours, and therefore, the markets needs. For example, one of oursuppliers did not have RPM as standard on their DieselEmissions Tester, which is a standard requirement forDOE Testing in the Republic of Ireland. We were able towork with that supplier in an effort to modify the unit tosuccessfully meet the needs of the market. Also, ourproducts, as standard, are all CE Approved in compliancewith the EU Directive (93/68/EEC).

A customer of Sundance can expect a high quality ofservice and expertise. Our experience in the industrymeans that all customers’ needs are catered for and weprovide a multitude of services, such as carriage to site, fitting and training. No stone will be left unturned in an effort to satisfy the customer.

Sundance is a well-established AutomotiveEquipment Sales & Service supplier. We are well-known throughout the industry for our knowledge ofthe market, and our innovation within it. We are constantly searching for new ideas and avenues inwhich to make our business more efficient. Being astep ahead of the trends within the market has become a trademark, and with the ever-increasing

A Direct serviceAt a time when the haulage industry has been suffering greatly, it is unusualto see a new business start up in the sector, but that's exactly what SeanKeaveney did in 2009.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS78

A Renault cab

Page 39: Irish Trucker magazine June 2012

It took a brave decision for the Galway nativeto set up any sort of business never mindone in the haulage industry, but Sean had

the confidence to do so and he admits to IrishTrucker that it was the right decision.

Sean had manyyears experience inthe industry, havingbeing involved withtrucks most of hisadult life. Indeedwhen he spentsome time inCanada, helearned his tradeas an ice roadtrucker, a job thathas been made sofamous that it hasits on show on Skytelevision.

“I worked on theice roads for about

a year and a half when I wasover there. It was a greatexperience and was like nothingI had experienced before,” saidSean.

“Before I left I had acquired alot of contacts in the industry, sowhen I came back I knew that Icould gain some work, so I setup Direct Transport Galwaythree years ago now.”

Direct Transport Galway is awest coast based couriercompany that specialise in

overnight nationwide deliveries and collections.“We provide a comprehensive and reliable courier service

for all items, covering everything from an envelope to a fullload of pallets, as well as all packages, parcels and boxes inbetween.”

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS 79

Direct Transport Galwaywas set up three years ago

The firm is based at Glenascaul IndustrialPark in Oranmore, Co Galway

Page 40: Irish Trucker magazine June 2012

Direct Transport is also part of PalletExpress and is the main operator forthe west of Ireland.

“The Pallet Express is a great sourceof work and it provides a reliable andefficient service to a large customerbase across the country.

“Every member of the network runs avery professional set-up, so there arenever any complaints and I'm delightedto be involved.”

Sean operates one artic, four rigidsand a number of vans in order toensure that regardless of the size of thecargo, they can facilitate all theircustomers

“At Direct Transport Galway we havea fleet of vehicles and an extensivetransportation network to service sameday, next day, timed and standarddeliveries nationally, within the UK andto Europe.

“We offer competitive pricing for alltypes of deliveries, whether it is rush,next-day, same-day or route work. Formany of your urgent parcels, a next dayservice will be just what you need. However, deadlines, clients, orsometimes just the parcel's importanceor value will require a same daydelivery.”

Situated in their premise atGlenascaul Industrial Park inOranmore, Co Galway, Sean and histeam of six employees have worked

hard to build the business and he ispleased with the direction the companyis heading.

“I can't really complain as thebusiness has grown on an annualbasis. We moved to the business parka year ago as we required largerpremises to accommodate ourexpanding fleet and the level of workthat we are providing.”

Sean revealed that he employs hisown mechanic to look after the fleet ashe feels that this is one way of cuttingdown on the many overheadsconnected with the industry.

“We do all our own maintenance andwe ensure that the vehicles are wellmaintained in order to avoid down time, which is an area we never have toomuch problems with, thankfully.

“There are many overheads tocontend with in the industry, but likeeveryone else, I think fuel prices arethe biggest problem at the moment.

“Last year I had 12 vehicles on theroad, but I was forced to cut back onthe fleet as the rising cost of dieselmeant that it was not financially viableto run so many trucks.

“I do believe I made the right decisionby cutting back as if I didn't then I'm notsure if we would have been able tosurvive, it's as simple as that.”

Sean pointed to customer satisfactionas the key to a successful business,

something that Direct TransportGalway prides itself on.

“We do the job to 100% of ourcapabilities. The drivers I have here arevery competent and make sure that thecustomer receives their package ontime, every time.

Overall, Sean feels that the industryhas settled slightly, although he admitsevery assessment must be made withthe greatest of care.

“We are getting bigger all the time andif we can keep that level of growthgoing then I'll be very happy. It is a veryvolatile industry and every decision hasto be made with the utmostconsideration.”

Timber!Specialised tools and machinery are needed to work in the forestry industryand sourcing these can be a problem for some customers.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS82

However, Portarlington based Robinson DistributionsLtd can cater for all your needs as they have ten yearsexperience in business, while many more working

hands on in the forestry industry. For this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile the Laois

based firm and speak to managing director Scott Robinsonabout the services that they provide.

Scott and his brother Ross established the business in 2002having had previous experience working in the industry andduring the intervening years, they have built up a largecustomer base, many of who are repeat customers now.

The company was established to supply an efficient repairand maintenance service for timber harvesting and loghandling equipment. Also in 2002, Robinson Distributionsecured the Loglift and Alucar agencies.

Having a background in the forestry industry means thatRobinson Distribution has an understanding of the customerneeds and if they haven't the product that someone seeks attheir premises, they will source them very quickly.

In 2004 they were appointed the official Ponsee distributorsfor Ireland. That same year, the first Robinson Trailers were

manufactured. In recent years they have also securedagencies for Neuson, Iggesund, Kesla and Oregon andcontinue to develop and enhance their service and support tothe forestry industry.

Supplying a top range of brands also gives the customer thepeace of mind in the knowledge that they are purchasing aquality product and always at competitive prices.

Located at Portnahinch, Portarlington, Robinsons aresituated in a county that has a long tradition in timberharvesting, haulage and sawmilling.

Scott and Ross' father Alan has worked most of his life intimber harvesting equipment and it was no surprise when histwo sons followed suit.

“We were working with timber from when we were at schooland it's in our blood so to speak,” admitted Scott. “Theexperience that we have gathered over the years gives us agreat knowledge of the industry and helps us understand whatthe customer needs.”

Robinson Distribution provides an extensive product rangeand this includes Robinson Trailers, Ponsee, Loglift, Alucar,Neuson Ecotec, Kesla, Junkkari, Bars & Chains, Oregon, Pre

Owned, Titan Lubricants and Titan Firewood Machines.“We have a large product range, all of which are top brands.

With Robinson Trailers, we manufacture our own trailers forthe forestry industry and provide a large selection that can beproduced to the customers' specifications. We produce a highquality trailer and even though this is a very competitivemarket, we are pleased with the workload that we have.

“When we decided tomanufacture trailers feedbackwas very positive and providedus with the incentive necessaryto invest further resources anddevelop the Robinson Trailerbrand. The rest, as they say, ishistory, as we have nowsuccessfully manufactured alarge number of quality trailers.

The Robinson Trailer range isalways expanding to keep upwith our customers' needs andto attract new customers. Acombination of high quality, competitive price and listeningto our customers, have beenkey contributors to steadygrowth of the Robinson Trailerbrand.

“We manufacture flats, semi-trailers, tippers and turn tabletrailers to a high specification aswell as producing skip trailers

and roll on/roll off trailers.Robinson are now very happy and excited to announce that

they will now be manufacturing and supplying slidingcontainer trailers, the decision has been made after many callto their office with people requesting quotations andspecifications on such trailers after seeing their timber trailerson the road.

A Robinson Distribution log trailer

The company wasfounded ten years ago

Page 44: Irish Trucker magazine June 2012

“We also manufacture our own type of log splitter and havetwo types on offer. Before we started production we compileda list of features requested. The machine had to be well built, powerful, safe, easy to use and cost effective. It would alsoneed to be capable of performing well when powered from

tractor hydraulics. We then produced a proto-type which wasrigorously tested. Following a number of changes to thatinitial design, the now popular Titan 12+ Splitter went intoproduction.”(Take all of this out as it not important to ourbusiness)

With the ongoing expansion of a wood fuel market here,Robinson Distribution is also developing and supplyingwoodchip delivery systems and boilers, suitable for largescale end users and contractors in this sector.

“This is an area that we have developed in recent years andit has been going fairly well with a lot of interest being shown. They are used mostly in the industrial sector.”

Given the current economic climate, Scott revealed thattheir second hand trade has improved considerably. “Wewould be selling a lot of used equipment, all of which isserviced and working perfectly. In the current market, moneyis not as available as it was before, but in saying that it hasnot really affected us.

“With a good team of experienced team on board Scottadmitted that without their hard work, the success of thebusiness would not have been achieved to the level it hasfound itself. All our employees are highly trained regardless ofwhat area they work in. Many of them have been with us fromthe start and they are very reliable and hard working.”

Qualityservice/primelocation/competitiveratesPD Flaherty Transport, Storage & Logistics Ltd. is a stellar family businessthat’s been going strong for 30 years, providing an exceptional nationwidecontainer delivery / collection service, including hazardous consignments.Irish Trucker dropped into the well-appointed, strategically-located base atKilshane, Dublin 11 and had a chat with company director Pat Flaherty.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS86

The Flaherty name continues through thegenerations with Pat’s sons Pat and Derek

Page 47: Irish Trucker magazine June 2012

PD Flaherty ticks all the boxes.Offering a wide range of services atcompetitive rates, the company

also boasts decades of experience andexpertise as well as holding waste permitsfor every county in Ireland. The location –at Kilshane, on the N2 and within minutesof the M50 and Port Tunnel – is ideal andstorage facilities are located on-site(including storage for containers).

There are state-of-the-art unloading /loading facilities in the yard, comprising allthe latest specialist equipment andpersonnel for the most awkward loads. Thededicated fleet of 20 articulated lorries and60 trailers (including curtainsiders) is allcompany-owned, with no worksubcontracted. Drivers and vehicles areavailable for contract work at agreed daily /weekly rates and the team at PD FlahertyTransport, Storage & Logistics is alwaysprepared to work out a good deal on anycontract or job, with space available atreasonable rates on their vehiclestravelling daily between Dublin and the restof the country.

The company has really gone fromstrength to strength since €1.6m wasinvested in the new yard at PeachvilleLodge, Kilshane six years ago. Thelocation is ideal in every way, as PatFlaherty confirms: “We are in a very goodlocation. Most of our work goes throughDublin Port and we are only twelve minutesaway.

“Nationwide container work is at the core of the business, with 16 of our 20 lorries doing that and the other four workingon international work.”

The family business was established by Pat’s late fatherPaddy Flaherty and is now overseen by his two sons Pat andDerek (thus PD). As well as being co-directors, the two mainmen behind the business alsooperate in a hands-on fashion– Pat is out on the road everyday and Derek helps look afterthe trucks and trailers in theyard. In turn, Pat’s own threesons – Paddy, Jason andAndre – are all working asdrivers. “We also have LarryHilliard as transport /operations manager and hekeeps the show on the road, while Natalie Canavan andAndre also work inoperations,” Pat notes.

In terms of consignments,PD Flaherty Transport,Storage & Logistics Ltd. is ageneral haulage operator withthe capacity to transport allkinds of loads, includinghazardous materials.

Apart from two Volvos, thefleet comprises exclusively of

Scanias. Pat is a big fan of their reliability and says that thisis vital in the current climate with fuel costs at such anoutrageous level. The majority of the fleet comprises ’04 – ’06regs, with a few ‘08s also thrown into the mix. These are allmeticulously maintained in immaculate condition andoptimum running order. “They are all well-maintained here inour own workshop, where we have two fully-qualifiedmechanics working full time, making sure they remain in topnick. We also have parking facilities here, which we makeavailable to other truckers.”

In addition to the comprehensive fleet, there is also a rangeof lifting / handling equipment in the yard and all the materialsnecessary to provide a thoroughly-dependable storagesolution. Pat is glad to point out that in general the companyis performing fairly well at the moment – not a bad situation tobe in considering the economic times that are in it:

“We are paying our way and keeping our heads above thewater, which is all you can ask for at the moment. Times aretough right across the industry but we have some goodcustomers who have stood by us. We’ve provided them witha great service down through the years and they arerewarding us with their loyalty.

“We’re lucky to have good relations with the likes of Keuhne& Nagel, DFDS, Blue Water, IPS and JB International as wellas Greenstar, AES and Thorntons in the recycling end ofthings. We are delighted to have done business with themover the years and would like to thank them for their support.

“In this business, service is everything. That’s what it’s allabout at the end of the day. We have a very good workingrelationship with all our customers and we always give thema personal, honest service. At the moment, we’re working allover Ireland, with a lot of city work included.”

Looking to the future, Pat concludes: “We’re going to keepgoing, providing a good service and we’ll hope for the best.Nobody knows what’s around the corner. The price of fuel isa massive factor now and it’s the same for every haulier – it’sputting us under a lot of pressure. You can only give so muchfor so little before something has to give. It’s getting moredifficult to price work these days. Margins have become verytight and you have no room to manoeuvre.

“The way things are, you’d be happy just to make a modest

GKTM has been operating now for four years and theneed for traffic management on Irish roads has grownin recent years. Operations Director Barry Bessant

speaks to Irish Trucker about the continued growth of thecompany.

GKTM Ltd and sister company Gary Keville Transport aresituated on a four acre site at South Bank road, Ringsend nearthe centre of Dublin's docklands and close to all majormotorways.

The services provided are impressive to say the least with anarray of areas covered that include traffic managementconsultancy, traffic management design and planning, TMinstallations and systems; single and multi lane closures; roadclosures and detours, manual stop/go operations; temporarytraffic light set ups, convoy systems; crossovers and contraflows to name just a few.

Barry revealed that the company has grown considerablysince being established only a few years ago and that theyalready involved in a number of projects, such as; expandingto include small civil engineering works to their port folio.

“We have made steady progress and last year we were verybusy indeed, which we were delighted about and hopefully we

can build on that this year. We won't really know how busy wewill be until the councils release their budgets, which isgenerally around June,” said Barry.

The Operations Director revealed that the level of servicesprovided by the company is second to none.

“We offer a complete service in that we will look after thedesign of the traffic management plan, supply the productsand erect them. The work that we have been involved in todate has seen us develop a large customer base.

“GKTM can provide a vast array of traffic related services forstart to finish applications. These are the tools you need to getthe job done. We are a service company with a completemenu of quality traffic control devices/systems and a missionof attaining 100% customer satisfaction.

“Obviously, we are primarily involved with road projects, butthat is only part of what we do. When councils are cuttinggrass, we can supply the labour, plant, equipment and trainingfor the operatives. Similarly with the transportation ofabnormal loads, we can plan the route, liaise with all therelevant authorities, obtain permits (where required), provideescort vehicles and of course any temporary trafficmanagement systems to facilitate the safe movement of the

load.”Health and Safety has become

a major issue on Irish roads andBarry stressed that this was akey area that GKTMconcentrate on with theemphasis being not just on thesafety of motorists, but on theworkforce and pedestrians alike.

“We comply with all health, safety and regulations that arein place and take into greatconsideration the safety of thepeople involved. Our policy'Let's all go home safe after ourwork is done' includes thepeople that are working on theroads, general road users andmembers of the public.”

Road works can be the sourceof most motorists anxieties, even though the work being

done is to benefit them. However, not many see it that wayand Barry revealed that frustration can sometimes boil over.

“We had an employee punched recently just for doing hisjob, whilst others have also been threatened with being shot, which is unacceptable. This job is not for everyone as theabuse that some of the workers receive is unwarranted.

“I'd urge motorists to be more patient and understanding asthe work being carried out is for their benefit. We arecommitted to minimising the disruption of traffic flow andpedestrian routes that may result from our client's activitieswhilst maintaining the highest levels of safety at all times.

“We can achieve this by promoting innovative solutions toage old problems and continually striving to develop newideas that will enhance safety and their public image.

“GKTM can design and produce traffic managementdrawings for short or long term schemes. Whether it is asimple lane closure or a multiphase crossover scheme ourTM plans will ensure safety and efficiency for site personnel, motorists and the general public.

Barry is confident that 2012 will be a big year for thecompany and he feels that as their reputation grows so toowill the amount of projects GKTM will be involved in.

“I've no doubt that this year will be a fantastic year for thecompany. We are improving our service all the time and I'mconfident that with the quality of service that we provide, therewill be no problems.”

GKTM has a new Training Centre on its four-acre site onSouth Bank Road, Ringsend. It is ideally situated for allDockland companies and with easy access for companiesfurther afield.
