This set of tunes comes from the title track of the Two Tap Trio’s recent CD, A Night at the Fair. The Two Tap Trio is, of course, Nathan Gourley, Norah Rendell, and Brian Miller. Such is the popularity of the band, it’s no surprise that some of the tunes from the CD, including these jigs, are beginning to be played in our local sessions. Brian and Norah learned these particular versions from musicians in Cork. To learn more about the Two Tap Trio, visit their website at http://www.twotaptrio.com. Usual disclaimers: Any transcription errors are my own. The notation here is not meant to be a substitute for listening. It is simply an aid to learning the tune.

Does this time of year, and this weather, give you the urge for a long winter's nap? Codladh is the common word for "sleep" in Irish, and a nap is a néal codlata, kind of a funny phrase, since the primary meaning of that néal is "cloud." But néal is widely used for napping, dozing, snoozing kinds of things. So when we say, Níor chodail mé néal aréir, we're using that néal
(and the verb form of "sleep") to say, "I didn't sleep a wink last night." Often, on these cold days, it is tempting to sleep late, to do the codladh na headra. The eadra part at the end refers to the "late-morning milking time." When we say that a bear sleeps through the winter, we translate that quite literally: Codlaíonn
béar an geimhreadh. Unfortunately, this same phrase is used for "hibernation," so when it comes to the fine points of zoology, whether the bear truly hibernates or just sleeps, Irish isn't much help. As for other creatures, "the sleep of the goose," codladh
gé, describes very light sleep, whereas that of the "chicken," codladh an tsicín, is a long, protracted sleep. Typical of Irish states of being and feelings, when you are actually sleeping, you are "in your sleeping" (i do
chodladh) in Irish. And when sleep is "on you," tá
codladh ort, you are still awake but "feeling sleepy." To "wake" from sleep, we can use the verbs múscail or dúisigh. Interestingly enough, the latter verb, dúisigh, is also the word used when we "start the engine" of a car or machine. The engine is in its dormant state, and in Irish we do not so much start it up as "awaken" it. And when you engage in codladh na súl oscailte, the "sleep of the open eyes," you are "day dreaming." Suan is another word used for "sleep" or "slumber." Combine suan with the word for "walking," siúl, and you get suansiúl, or "sleep-walking." If you look in on your kids and say, Tá siad ina suan codlata, "They are in their sleep of sleep," you mean that they are very fast
asleep indeed. Circle January 30 on your calendar for Gaeltacht Minnesota's annual fundraiser. We'll run 2:00 - 6:00 pm on that Sunday afternoon at the Dubliner (Thanks, Tom!), at Vandalia and University in St. Paul. Great music from Legacy, 40 Shades of Green, and Martin McHugh and friends, along with a terrific dance performance from Rince na Chroí. Five bucks (we'll take more) gets you in the door for all of this entertainment, a shot at a door prize, and a free beverage. We'll have more information on our web site, www.gaelminn.org .
This is the only explicit fundraising Gaeltacht Minnesota does all year, and it is the main reason we are able to provide workshop opportunities at such affordable levels. Please stop in that afternoon, or make a donation
in class or by mail (box 14964, mpls 55414). Thanks By the way, in spite of some very impressive winter weather, we had a good turnout and a great time on December 13th at our 29th annual Christmas Dinner. Special thanks to Suin, for pulling things together, and to Martin, Pete and Cory for the tunes. We also enjoyed songs from the Síles, Handful O' Fun, and Suin, and an amazing but very compact version of Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" as Gaeilge. And congratulations to Johana for taking home the traveling trophy this year. There is no doubt that she is a role model for many a member of Gaeltacht Minnesota. For more about all of our activities, stop in at www.gaelminn.org, and sign up for our e-newsletter, the GaelMinn Gazette, while you are there. Ná hoscail doras na hiaróige

IMDA Through the Years The Irish Music and Dance Association is looking forward to our 30th Annual St. Patrick's Day Irish Celebration at Landmark Center in 2011. The Irish music and dance community has grown along with IMDA over those years - as is evident from the IMDA newsletter from November, 1983 on the following pages. You'll find some familiar names included - Clairseach, Paddy O'Brien, Erin Hart, and Tom Dahill. And some have faded into memory - MacCafferty's, Coffeehouse Extempore and Walking on Air. And - the IMDA newsletter has grown a bit as well. A bit of Irish Music and Dance Association Business was cut for length, but might be of interest. "This is the last chance newsletter! If you haven't become a member, this is the last newsletter that we'll be able to send you. Memberships are only $10.00 for individuals, and benefits include the newsletter, discounts for all IMDA-sponsored events, and of course the tax deduction. Call 729-9006 today for your membership materials." We hope you enjoy a walk down memory lane.

This year the Emerald Society recognized the contributions of the late and
great Tim “Fitz” Fitzgerald with a proclamation and a gift in his honor to
the Irish Fair of Minnesota's Legacy Fund. For more information on the
Emerald Society, go to http://www.emeraldsocietymn.org
The proclamation follows:
EMERALD SOCIETY OF MINNESOTA
On this Nineteenth day of November, Twenty Thousand Ten,
The Emerald Society of Minnesota wishes to recognize our Honorary Member,
Tim “Fitzy” Fitzgerald.
On March 3rdt, 2010, our dear friend Fitzy was called to leave this world, in body, but not in
spirit. Throughout his life Fitzy sought to bring joy to others through word, song, poetry, and
the enchanting harmony of the bagpipes.
It is this passion that brought Fitzy to our society of law enforcement.
In 1992 Fitzy was instrumental in the formation of the Emerald Society here
in the great state of Minnesota.
Through his expertise in the arts, and friendship of so many, he united the communities of
Law Enforcement and Irish Culture. We recognize that Policing in America and the Irish
American heritage have been closely interwoven since the first immigrants arrived in this
country. Fitzy aided us in setting the foundation of our society that promotes that heritage,
so it may never be forgotten.
Also never to be forgotten are the heroes who have been slain in the service of protecting
others. Fitzy never faltered from playing tribute to our fallen brothers and sisters. He played
the tunes of Amazing Grace at countless funerals, and did so proudly, ensuring that every time
that hymn is echoed everyone lost may never be forgotten.
It has been ratified that annually the Emerald Society of Minnesota will offer a charitable
grant, in the name of Tim “Fitzy” Fitzgerald, to a cause that promotes the enduring
characteristics of our friend, brother, and lasting hero.
For he shall always be remembered for his
Selflessness, Music, Song, Charity, Heritage, & Pride

Thank You
For the last 5 years, the Irish Music and Dance Association has presented the Decade of Dance Award to Irish
dancers who have studied for at least ten years, a total of 58 dancers to date. The award recognizes the incredible
commitment these dancers make, and the important role they play as Ambassadors for Irish Culture to the greater
community. Award winners are recognized on the Main Stage at IMDA's Day of Irish Dance at Landmark Center,
and receive a certificate and a special medal.
Each year, we hear from parents and dancers that this is a very meaningful event for them both, as for many dancers
these ten years represent a majority of their lives. IMDA is pleased to share the following letter from the parent of
one of our Decade of Dance Award winners, Norah Carroll, expressing her family's perspective on the award and
the importance of Irish dance for Norah and young people like her.
I know that you are particularly (and justifiably) proud of the IMDA's "Decade of
Dance" award program. I have been meaning for some time to tell you how much my daughter Norah appreciated receiving that award a while back. I think she saw it as evidence of the fact that parties outside of her immediate family recognized and appreciated the dedication and hard work that was required to remain actively involved in Irish dance for ten consecutive years despite the many other demands on her time.
Personally, I think that her IMDA Decade of Dance award was one of the factors that prompted her to seek out information about opportunities to participate in Irish music and dance in the Des Moines area while she was a student at Drake University. Among other things, she began attending concerts in central Iowa that were sponsored by the Celtic Music Association [CMA], and in the process she got to know some of the CMA's officers and volunteers. About a year ago, they invited her to serve on the CMA's Board of Directors (http://thecma.org/board-of-directors/), which she has enjoyed a great deal.
Despite double majoring in English and Journalism, and working a variety of jobs while in school, she got through her academic requirements in 3 1/2 years and will be graduating from Drake later this month. She has accepted a full-time position with a Des Moines social media company called Lava Row (http://www.lavarow.com/team/), where she has been working part-time since April of this year. Of course, I'm hoping that she will move back to Minnesota eventually, and I'm thinking that the day-to-day experience she is gaining in the rapidly-evolving social media realm will make her an attractive candidate for any number of Twin Cities jobs whenever she decides to relocate.
However, no matter where she happens to be at any given time, I'm sure that she will continue to seek out and become actively involved in organizations that promote and celebrate Irish culture. Those inclinations are partly attributable to the IMDA, not only because of your Decade of
Dance award program, but also in connection with the Landmark Center activities at which Norah performed during a decade's worth of St. Patrick's Day celebrations. The knowledge that your collective efforts are producing such tangible results in a new generation of Irish-Americans must be quite rewarding.
Congratulations, and on behalf of the Carroll family, thank you. Kevin Carroll

Brooklyn by Colm Toibin, paperback
Simon & Schuster
Eilis Lacey is young, Irish, over-educated and under-employed in small town Ireland in the 1950s. When a young priest in Brooklyn offers her a sponsorship to move to New York and begin a new life, she decides to go, leaving behind a frail mother and spinster sister, and finds herself in a world at once foreign and familiar, as she meets other ex-pat Irish immigrants----and a Dodgers-loving young Italian named Tony. When events back home threaten to upend her newly established life, Eilis must decide between her hard-won independence and family obligation. Brooklyn is a masterpiece in miniature; everything is done deftly, in small brushstrokes, but it makes a masterpiece of detail, emotional nuance and power. Eilis' story is every person's coming-of-age story, and yet uniquely hers. Every one of us navigates the journey from adolescent years to adulthood, yet an immigrant faces the additional challenge of self-realization and maturity in unfamiliar, sometimes inexplicable surroundings, in a culture without the comfort of known familial territory. At first the exceptionality of the novel is not evident: it just seems like a story which has been told many times, of the stranger in a strange land. But the quiet determination and subtle shadings of the characters, their motivations and dreams, are shown in intimate and masterful detail. For an "ordinary" person, Eilis' experiences, her homesickness, heart-wrenching grief at unexpected tragedy back
home, and her ultimate resolution are extraordinary indeed. And the descriptions of Brooklyn in the 1950s, the architecture, the street life, the game of baseball, the streetcars, the sheer energy of every culture and social type rubbing shoulders with every other---the book is poetic and lyrical in its depiction of New York and its citizens of fifty years ago. This is a "little" book that sneaks up on you; you don't realize until you're halfway through just how good it is. The characters remain in your heart long after the last page is turned, and you find yourself wondering about the story after the story. Elegantly written, true to its core, you will love this book. I'm going to read everything else Colm Toibin has published, and I'm looking forward to the trip. Sherry Ladig, frequent contributor to this column, is an Irish trad musician, a music museum
guide at the Schubert Club, and formerly wrote reviews for the Hungry Mind Bookstore's
newsletter, Fodder.

u eoil " Music to the Irish is a living delight, a mysterious key to a host of undiscovered emotions hoarded in the secrets of
the soul." Mairtin Byrnes
Our music hound this month is Chad McAnally, a talented and accomplished musician who has made performing on the Clairseach, or Gaelic harp, his life's work. He currently teaches harp at the Center for Irish Music and is active in the Twin Cities traditional music scene, where he plays in the band Rumgumption and regularly takes part in local sessions.
CD: “Fingal” (self titled) James Keane, Dáithí Sproule, Randall Bays. New Folk Records- NFR0502 If scientific research is to be believed, you are not only what you eat... you are what you listen to as well. According to a recent study I stumbled upon, a person's taste in music is established in the mid-teenage years and often stays with them throughout their life. This report offers an explanation: music at this stage forms mental attachments that are linked to the neurological development of one's sense of order, aesthetics and identity in the world. On reading this I laughed out loud. My first thought, “"Well, this explains some things! Dáithí Sproule is partly responsible for my mental development!”
You see, my case seems to bear out these theories. My obsession with Irish traditional music started in my mid-teens and eventually turned into a profession. The music I was listening to back then did indeed make a lifelong impact. One of the first albums of traditional music I heard as a child was “Is It Yourself?” featuring James Kelly on fiddle, Dáithí's singing and guitar work and Paddy O'Brien on box. At fifteen I rediscovered this album in an old stack of LP's and played it constantly for months.
This teenage neurological attachment would also explain why one of my current favorite CD's the self titled album “Fingal,” also features Dáithí – with Randal Bays on fiddle and James Keane on the button accordion. Mental imprinting aside, this is a great album by three outstanding musicians that succeeds in providing something for everyone-- be they newbies or know-it-alls. Though we live in a time in which good traditional music is reasonably accessible, one seldom meets with an album that is so exciting and vibrant while having such immense depth and diversity. A good deal of this album was recorded live, and the energy of great performances before an appreciative audience clearly comes across. There are moving songs in Irish and English, masterfully played airs, and brilliant tune sets of aggressive power and great subtlety. For example, I defy anyone to sit completely still through the set of driving reels on track six or to not be touched by songs like “Ó Bhean A' Tí” and “Bean Dubh a' Ghleanna.” In short, I'd recommend this album to anyone. It is simply a wonderful work, no matter what your mental state is!
