IRISH BLESSING
Remembered Joy Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free!
I follow the plan God laid for me.
I saw His face, I heard His call,
I took His hand and left it all...
I could not stay another day,
To love, to laugh, to work or play;
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
And if my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss...
Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss.
My life’s been full, I’ve savoured much:
Good times, good friends, a loved-one’s touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief—
Don’t shorten yours with undue grief.
Be not burdened with tears of sorrow,
Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow.
This is our Prayer of Remembrance for the month of November As we pray for our loved ones who had died

4th November 2016
Dear Parents and Members of our Sacred Heart School community,
This week I have had the honour of working with our Year 5’s as they prepare to take on the mantle of student leadership at Sacred Heart. After two days of prayer, input and reflection, the Year 5 students have nominated themselves into Ministry groups, as well as voted for the positions of School captain and House captains. My thanks to Sr Teresa, Jo-Anne Downing, and our two present school captains, who provided insights into what they considered leadership to be about, and how that may ‘look’ at Sacred Heart.
Our Student Leadership model at Sacred Heart is based on the model Jesus gave his through his ministry – that of servant leadership. It is impressed upon our leaders-in-waiting that their leadership is not about power and prestige, but more about looking for ways of serving our student community through the roles they undertake within the school. I have been so much impressed by the calibre of the Year 5’s, and look forward to their aspirations reaching fulfilment as they grow in their leadership roles in 2017.

Organisation
Emotional Awareness (of self and others)
Openness (to new ideas and alternative points of view), and
A willingness to walk in the footsteps of Jesus
I look forward to walking this journey with our Year 6 of 2017 class group.
OUR TALENTED TROOPS The week has also been for me one where the talents of Sacred Heart have been ‘on-show’. Throughout the week the Talent Show has continued to showcase the great talents our students possess. For the last two nights, I have enjoyed the mini-concerts of DDJ Productions and have watched our musically talented students proudly display their awesome talent. I am always in awe of the hidden talents our students shelter; until one day they decide to share them with the world. CONGRATULATIONS KENDELL Congratulations to Kendell Burton, one of our talented School Officers who has secured the vacant Prep Aide position. We warmly welcome Kendell to the Prep rooms and know that she will continue to assist our children to thrive at Sacred Heart. M.A.D HAT DAY – FRIDAY 11TH NOVEMBER M.A.D. hat day (Melanoma Awareness Day) was begun a few years ago at the instigation of one of our school captains. The occurrence of melanomas on her Dad when she was little, left on her an indelible print of the need to ensure sun-safety at all times. The statistics are frightening.
Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, with more than 13,000 Australians expected to be diagnosed with melanoma in Australia in 2016. To really ‘earth’ that statistic, one person every six hours will die from melanoma in Australia (www.melanoma.org.au). We make the mistake of thinking that just any hat will do – when in actual fact we need to conscious about a hat that offers protection to our ears, our nose, our neck, and not just the top of our head. A cap, whilst trendy, will not do it. To raise the children's awareness, next Friday (11th) is M.A.D. hat day. Each student is encouraged to wear a creative sun-safe hat to school. So be creative, be unique, be sun-safe. An incentive will be given to the best hat within each class. Remember to talk with your child about why being sun-safe is an important life-long skill to know. REMEMBRANCE DAY – ASSEMBLY AT 9AM Next Friday is Remembrance day. This year marks the 98th anniversary of the Armistice, which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year on this day, Australians observe one minute’s silence in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Due to the availability of our guests from the Sandgate RSL, we will hold the remembrance assembly - led by Year 2 Silver - at 9am next Friday. Please join us for this occasion. There will be no assembly at 2pm. PARENT CONSULTATION RE CLASS GROUPINGS 2017 As of close-of-business today the Parent input phase of the class selection process for the commencement of the 2017 school year has now closed.
Due to the need to hold interviews for a number of 12-month classroom-teacher contracts next Friday, we will be unable to announce the class groupings by next Friday. We will endeavour to have these to you by early of the week-after. My apologies for this slight delay.
Term 4 Wk 6 Allocation of children to classes is complete
and announced. Class teachers announced for the following school year. Changes will only be made to these lists after they are announced in the event of human error on our behalf.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK The road to success is always under construction.
Sincerely
Chris Chris Bathersby Principal

Dear Parents / Caregivers Yesterday the Year 3-6 students gathered in the Church to celebrate the Eucharist. The children participated in the Mass with their singing, actions and responses to the prayers and the readings. Our next Liturgy of the word for the Prep – Year 2 classes will be held on Thursday 17 November commencing at 9:00am in the Church. All parents are welcome to join in the Liturgy. We look forward to your attendance.
Christmas Hampers
This year we continue our support of the community and the work of the St Vincent de Paul Society by creating Christmas Hampers for families in need. This creates a great opportunity for us to live out our motto of “For God Others Self” by bringing in items for these hampers. Classes will begin to build their hampers in Week 6. The Christmas hampers is our Outreach for Term 4. We remember our less fortunate families in the community and explicitly give the children in our school the opportunity to provide for others in the name of Jesus. We believe that Christ helps the less fortunate through us for He has no body but ours. This is such a reverent way for the students to conclude the school year especially in the Year of Mercy.
The Spiritual Works of Mercy
The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to "help our neighbour in their spiritual needs." We continue the seven Spiritual Works of Mercy this week which is focused on: Bearing Wrongs Patiently Do not be bitter about wrongs done against you. Place your hope in God so that you can endure the troubles of this world and face them with a compassionate spirit.
Frustrated with someone? Step away from the situation, take a few deep breaths, pray the Our Father, asking God for patience

“Pardoning offences becomes the clearest expression of merciful love, and for us Christians it
is an imperative from which we cannot excuse ourselves”.

Japanese fast food すし Sushi
Look at these sushi (above left) the prep children made!
The prep children learned about authentic sushi. When I said to the children that
authentic sushi is made using raw fish placed on top of a small portion of vinegar rice, they
were stunned.
Sushi is sometimes sold in conveyor-belt restaurants in Japan, like in Australia, where
plates of sushi are put on a moving belt and the customers freely take the sushi they want
as it passes. I told the children you can't find western-style teriyaki chicken rolls or
avocado rolls in Japan. All you can find is raw fish or fish eggs on top of rice or cucumber
rolls, or raw fish rolls.
L.O.T.E - Japanese
Sushi originates from Southeast Asia in the beginning of the 4th century AD, when raw
fish was salted, wrapped in rice and kept in storage for months. That rice was not
consumed, but thrown away prior to the meal. After this method of preserving, raw fish
was introduced to Japan in the 8th century. Vinegar was used as a preservative instead of
rice and this is the origin of Japanese sushi. This is the reason why the word "sushi" means
"vinegar rice", as sushi is made with specially prepared rice mixed with vinegar, salt and
sugar.
In the 1800s, sushi became a popular fast food in Japan. A rice ball and a slab of raw fish
required very little preparation and can be eaten with hands. Over the years, sushi has
become a worldwide, well known food.
Happy learning Japanese!
