(860) 633-9691 Presidents Message Dear Fellow Members, You will be happy to know by the time you read this newsletter, our club will have reopened following our recent repair project. I encour- age you to come down and see the newly built bar and accessible rest rooms off the back lounge, in addition to a few other changes we made to the layout of the pub and adjacent lounge. We think you will be delighted with the open floor plan and the daylight that floods the space. A fresh coat of paint, refreshed wainscoting and some comfy chairs around the hearth should provide the setting for many memo- rable afternoons and evenings to come at your club! So come on down and see for yourself were waiting for you! During the demolition, copies of a newsletter dated August, 1974, were found in one of the walls behind the bar along with a brand new, unopened box of cigars. Coincidentally, the newsletter, signed by then President Jimmy Staunton, discusses the newly remodeled bar and the festivities surrounding the grand re-opening some 43 years ago. When we opened up the flooring we found old beer cans most likely used to support the pipes during installation back when the building was constructed in the late 1960’s. Weve saved these memen- tos and will be displaying them at some point in the near future. This project would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of some of our members. Please see the article pertain- ing to the project inside this newsletter. Our Halfway to St. Patricks Day event will be held on Saturday, September 16 th , from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Please support this event either by attending, volunteering, or both! We have some great volunteer opportunities visit our website and click on the link to sign up. During the September monthly meeting, nominations for Officers and Directors takes place. We are looking to form 3 or 4 teams of members who would like to volunteer for Pub Grub, with the goal of working one Friday night a month. We are also looking for vol-unteers to help prep specials, etc. on Thurs-day nights. Interested? Give Maureen Ken-nedy a call (860)550-3126 or email [email protected]. Please note that the Sunday Seisiun re-sumes on September 3rd and the Set Danc-ing Classes resume on Wednesday, September 6th.

A FEW WORDS OF GRATITUDE… It takes a village…and here at the Irish Ameri-can Home Society no words could ring more true. Several of our members and friends pitched in and volunteered their time and talent to get the job done and cut down on our costs for the recent repair project. Yes…we did have to pay certain contractors. But we wanted to make sure their enormous contributions were brought to the attention of their fellow members so you know how much they went above and beyond for their/your club…. Dave O’Leary, owner of Colonial Painting and Restoration, LLC, of Glastonbury paint-ed the entire pub and lounge spaces at no cost to our club! Dave also gave us the paint at his discounted cost. Thank you, Dave! Director Stephen Miskell, owner of Galway Tile, LLC, of Wethersfield and his brother, David Miskell, assisted with the demolition re-quired to make the needed repairs along with hours spent tiling the restrooms and kitchens. David put his plastering and sheet rocking skills to good use. Both Stephen and David removed the existing flooring in addition to putting the flooring back in place to save our club money. Stephen gave us all the new tiles at his dis-counted cost and he saved us a bundle! Thank you, Stephen and David! Martin Geoghegan, owner of MG Masonry, of Andover, gave the club an extremely dis-counted price on cutting through the concrete floors, digging up and exposing the old piping and then putting the whole thing back together again. I am sure you saw the pictures of the dirt piles in the pub in a recent email on the progress of the project. Thank you, Martin! Joseph Byrne and Lisa Jameson, owners of ServPro of Newington/Central Hartford did the remediation and cleaning when we had the first pipe back-ups in April of 2016. This was an enormous clean-up job that cost thousands of dollars…and they did it for free. AND nei-ther is a member of this club! Joe Byrne is the nephew of Mary Byrne and the late Sean Byrne, longtime members of this club. Joe remembers spending time here as a kid and in honor of both Joe and Lisa’s Irish heritage, they charged the club nothing. So as their motto says…”like it never even happened”. It was truly like that for us! Not only did they clean it up, they left us without a bill! Thank you, Joe and Lisa! Consider patronizing these fellow club members and business owners who went above and beyond for our club! Without their generosity, some of the work would have proven to be very costly. Our thanks and gratitude to all of you! Thank you to our Permittee Dan O’Connell and to Board Chair Pat Whelan, both of whom did more than their fair share of physical labor, but who also were on site day in and day out ensuring that the repairs and rebuild was on pace. They were also able to immediately communicate to the President and Directors

when it became apparent that we faced a minor obstacle that required considera-tion and a decision on how to proceed. These men were invaluable during this project. Thank you to Director Peter Hart and Jim Byram who were on site during the demolition and during the clean-up and truly went the extra mile. Thank you all! Many thanks to the following members that assisted with clean-up….and let me tell you it could not have been dustier or dirtier! They worked very hard for their club: Mary DaMotta, Jessica Dunn, Shei-la Dupuis Green, Sana Hart, Megan Hodlin, Joe Kennedy, Bob Landfear, Ted Lloyd, Myles McGee, Emily Mojica, Ei-leen K. Moore, Brian Moran, Sarah Mo-ran, Charlie Murray, Margaret O’Keefe, Elizabeth O’Leary, Liz Saunders, Allen Scarfone and Daniel Ustach (please note that Bob Landfear and Emily Mojica are not members…but good friends of the club). Thank you all! “The smallest thanks is always worth the effort it takes to give it” Anony-mous
