IRIS POWER ON-LINE PRODUCTS

The Iris Power HydroGuard, Iris Power BusGuard, and Iris PowerTurboGuard products, collectively referred to as the Iris Power Guardsystem, can be programmed to continuously measure partial discharge(PD) activity on motors and generators rated 6kV and above. The systemis sensitive to the most common stator winding failure mechanisms suchas overheating, contamination, and loose windings. The Iris PowerGuard technology allows plant personnel to plan corrective action if theIris Power Guard system detects problems.

The Iris Power Guard system was designed with these main goals inmind:

• Continuous and automated measurement of partial discharges, withthe data being accessible from a remote location. Data can beautomatically forwarded to a plant data acquisition system.

• Independent monitoring of individual motors or generators andcollection of PD data at specific machine conditions providing areliable trend.

• Separation of noise to ensure a low risk of false indication of statorproblems.

• Elimination of the need for an on-site expert to set up and collectdata when monitoring a motor or generator.

• Detection of rapidly developing insulation problems such as windinglooseness or endwinding contamination.

• Better interpretation of test results and trending of data under similaroperating conditions.

APPLICATIONS

• Iris Power HydroGuard systemfor use with capacitive couplersinstalled within hydrogenerator stator winding.

• Iris Power BusGuard system foruse with capacitive couplersmounted on the output bus ofsmall turbo generators, andmotors.

• Iris Power TurboGuard systemfor use with turbo generatorsequipped with stator slotcouplers.

The Iris Power Guard system usesIris Power EMCs (epoxy micacouplers) or Iris Power SSCs(stator slot couplers) that arepermanently installed on motorsand generators (6kV or higher).Each machine to be monitoredrequires one Data AcquisitionUnit (DAU) to be mountedoutside of the machine, near thesensors. Coaxial cables connectthe sensors to the DAU. Ethernetis used to connect the DAU to acentral monitoring computer.

IRIS POWER GUARD SYSTEM

One dedicated system controllercan control multiple DAUs,usually over a dedicated LAN.The system controller includes IrisPower PDGuardPro™ software.Through the software, the userdefines the generator or motoroperating conditions andfrequencies (triggers) for eachDAU to measure and store thePD activity. An alarm is raised ifthe PD activity is above a defineduser threshold.

The system controller also includesIris Power PDView™, a programfor displaying or trending anysaved PD data. The systemcontroller can be remotelyaccessed via a remote computerconnected to the same wide areanetwork (WAN). This allowspersonnel in distant offices todefine or change trigger conditionsand alarm levels, as well asdownload test results for displayon a secondary computer. The IrisPower Guard system continuouslycollects PD data (summary numbers[NQN, Qm], 2D, and 3D data)that are used for identification ofstator winding insulation degradation,trending and comparison withsimilar machines.

Facilities that have existingcoupler installations used withportable instruments can easilyinstall a Guard system byconnecting the instrument to theexisting sensor termination panelwithin the plant. This does notrequire an outage and theinstallation effort is limited toproviding power to the system,configuration, and running acommunication link to the systemcontroller. New users of the IrisPower PD technology must firstpermanently install the couplersduring a suitable machineoutage.

The Iris Power Guard system hasundergone unique and rigorouslyresearched methods to overcomethe electrical interference (noise)which is typical in most plantenvironments. This ensuresreliable and repeatablemeasurements with a lowprobability of false alarms. Thecollected data can be easilyinterpreted by a maintenanceprofessional after participating ina 2-day training seminar offeredby Qualitrol-Iris Power’sexperienced engineering staff.

The user's assessment ofinsulation system condition usingon-line PD testing is greatlyenhanced by having access to IrisPower's extensive PD database ofover 225,000 test results. Thecollective experience and resultsof our clients are regularlysummarized in statistical tables,available to all users. This is aservice unique to Qualitrol-Iris Power and its clients andensures objective interpretationof insulation condition.

WHAT IS PARTIALDISCHARGE?

Partial discharges (PD) are smallelectrical sparks that occur withinthe high voltage electricalinsulation in stator windings. PDoccurs whenever there are smallair gaps or voids in or on thesurface of the insulation.Normally, well-made statorwindings that are in goodcondition display very little PDactivity. However, over 60 years’experience has shown that as astator winding deteriorates fromwinding vibration, operation athigh temperatures, orcontamination from oil, moistureand other chemicals, the PDactivity will increase by a factor often or more. Thus, on-line PDmonitoring detects the main rootcauses of stator winding failure.Since PD monitoring can beperformed during normal motoror generator operation, andgenerally gives two or more yearsof warning indicating a risk offailure, on-line PD monitoring hasbecome a very powerful tool forpredictive maintenance.
