BALANCING THE LIGHTInteraction design | ITPD Master program

1

The interactive lamp was the final assignment for the course “Design Skills”. The designed interactive lamp should fit on a desk and the interaction should be based on a metaphor, the time for the assignment was one week.

Balancing the light is based on the metaphor of light as a fluid.

The lamp is built of wood, paper, cardboard, LEDs and a microcontroller.

It works with a “home made” balance sensor, consisting of a piece of cardboard with the shape of a crib, and a metallic ball inside. Each end of the crib is wired so when the metallic ball inside reaches an end the microcontroller can be activated to move the lights as a liquid would move.

When interacting with it, the light will flow from one container to the other or will find a balance when staying steady and parallel to the horizon.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS-THE DAILY CHALLENGESVideo design hopscotch | ITPD Master program

2

We realized a rapid ethnography research with arthritis patients, conducting interviews and getting video recordings. After collecting the data, we edited our video material to serve as tool for inspiration and requirement specs for professional designers. All the different video specs were compiled in a DVD.

Lack of strength

Lack of Strength is the clip we edited for the DVD. It is based in the difficulties patients suffer when dealing with modern packaging.Modern packaging is designed to be attractive to consumers, efficiently sized and recyclable. It might be even tested on usability, but is it really?

At the end of the course, we held a workshop with patients and designers. We conducted the following activities, using the clips collected:

- Video specs- Video cards- Video wall

INDOOR CLIMATE QUALITY OF LIFECritical design | ITPD Master program

3

For the critical design course we work with the SPIRE research centre at the University of Southern Denmark, in the project “Indoor climate quality of life”

We create critical artefacts to provoke the indoor climate company NILAN in thinking of new ways of recycle energy.

The NILAN energy vacuum

The NILAN energy vacuum is a system of tubes and suction pumps that collects all the lost energy generated by household appliances. The energy is accumulated and then used to power other devices.

Debate

Are you aware of that up to half of the energy produced worldwide is wasted?

LOKAL-NParticipatory innovation | ITPD Master program

4

Participatory Innovation is probably the most complete and challenging course of the 1st year of ITPD Master program. The goal of the house was to bring an User Centre Design approach into a company of our choice. We selected the local company aCon, and the product we took part in was Lokal-N, a future mobile device application for local news and ads.We worked within a multidisciplinary group formed by ITPD students and Innovation and Business students, working closely with company members and potential users.

Journalist for a day | Cultural probe

In order to find out more about usersʼ acceptance of a collaborative newspaper in the locality of Sonderborg we created an user probe called “Journalist for a day”.

The activity consisted in finding news happening in the city, that could be of interest for the rest of the community. At the end of the week the participants returned the articles and pictures they had collected.

Interviews | User research

As a first contact with the users, we conducted several interviews to find out about peopleʼs motivations, lives, and relationships with local newspapers and mobile phone techonology.

Personas | Modelling users

After conducting the interviews we created personas to maintain the userʼs insights during the rest of the process.

UGN (user generated newspaper) | Cultural probe|First tangible prototype

With the information collected by the participants of the “Journalist for a week” probe we created a newspaper to work as a second cultural probe. For each article there was a space for comments and a rating scale, so readers could leave their opinions about relevance and quality of the news.

CUT IN CARDBOARD | UX WORKSHOP

Participants were asked to shape their experiences related to perfoming the cultural probe “journalist for a day”

Using the shaped created, the participants were more open to talk about their experiences.

We conducted an User Experience workshop to find out about the experiences of the participants when carrying out the cultural probe “journalist for a day”.

SORTING | UX WORKSHOP

This activity enabled us to get feedback from users on the UGN prototype. Participants in this case played the role of readers.

They were asked to sort each news according to quality an relevance of the informacion.

RATING| UX WORKSHOP

After talking about their experiences, we ran a rating activity where participants had to grade the experiences. With this activity we were able to dig a bit deeper into usersʼ experiences.

BUSINESS MODEL CANVAS|DISCUSSING THE BM

We worked with the tool business model canvas to develop the business model for Lokal-N.

Parallel to our user researches, user probes and workshops with users we held several meetings with the company in order to combine usersʼ needs with business goals. Personas and a collection of data from the cultural probes and workshops worked as communication elements.

REFLECTION CANVAS | UCD APPROACH

At the end of our collaboration with the company we run an activity called “Reflection canvas” in order to find out how an UCD approach had shaped the development of the project.

CUT IN CARDBOARD| UCD APPROACH

For the last meeting with the company, we caried out the activity Cut in cardboard as we had done it with the participants of the cultural probe. In the case, they company members were asked to shape their experiences when bringing an User Centered Design approach to the development of the product.

SITUATION AWARENESS SYSTEMPerception and visual design| HCI Master program

(Ongoing project)

For the perception and visual design course we are working with the Human Factors department of the Swedish company Saab. The assignment consists of an analysis and redesign of the current situation awareness system of the Swedish aircraft GRIPPEN, based on the visual queries to be performed by a pilot when monitoring a house.

Literature: Visual thinking for design by Colin Ware

INTERVIEWS | FIELD STUDY

We conducted interviews with pilots to find out about users, usersʼ needs and usersʻ tasks. We also interviewed engineers to learn about systemʼs limitations.

VISUAL TASK AND VISUAL QUERY ANALYSIS

After the interviews we collected the data and analyzed the required visual tasks and visual queries to be supported by the visualization.

SITUATION AWARENESS SYSTEM| INTERFACE DESIGN(fist approaches)

Currently we are working on the design of the elements of the interface that will support the visual queries.

We will ran a workshop in the next step with the goal of evaluation our designed elements.
