Christmas is fast approaching and a visit to our local shopping centres is confirmation thereof. Christmas trees and decorations are already adorning the shops, stirring up excitement and long Christmas wish lists from my children. But first we have to get through upcoming exams, many year-end functions, concerts and visits to our local Christmas markets.

As always, there are a variety of charitable events and happenings that you can support which will bring some festive cheer to those less fortunate. Time to start sorting out those toys that your kids don’t play with anymore to donate to Barbara Tanton’s Garankuwa Hospital cause...

Also time to start planning for your travels if you are fortunate enough to be spending the holidays away. Make sure to get your vehicle serviced, check that your alarm system is in working order and book the dog sitter if you plan on leaving your pets behind.

It’s a great time of year to support local business. I came accross this challenge recently and thought I would pass it on to you...

Here’s an idea: Let’s all buy Christmas presents from small local businesses and self-employed people. Support your community. Buy from neighbours who sell online, local artisans, bookstores, florists, jewelers, bakers and craftspeople. Enjoy a cool drink at your local cafe. Let’s make sure our money goes to individual people this year. This way, more local people will have a better Christmas.

6A Sentimental Journey

by Jimmy Taylor

A ‘romp’ is my summary of Jimmy Taylor’s memoirs of living in Irene which he titled

as A sentimental Journey. Jimmy has captured the essence of what life was like in this unique village from the early 1960’s until 2010, when he and Marie

moved to a smaller home nearby.

They lived in Irene before many of the high walls were built, when the milk was

delivered by mule cart and everyone went to work by train. He describes how the Dramatic Society Shows transported

people into another world and how they relaxed after each production. The van der Byl family were as influential in vil-

lage life then as they are now and Irene Homes served, as it still does, as an

outlet for people’s care and generosity.

Featured is Jimmy’s love of nature and enjoyment of the abundant bird life.

Many residents are mentioned by name which enhances the ‘family atmosphere’. The book is generously illustrated by local artist Julia Davies

adding toits charm.

A short and happy read that many Irene folk will thoroughly enjoy.

Jimmy Taylor has ceded all the proceeds from the sale of this book to the Friends of the General Smuts Foundation and it is on sale at Smuts House

THE SMUTS HOUSE GOODWILL COUNTRY FAIR

Saturday, 31st January 2015

After a lull of a couple of decades, Smuts House in Irene is planning to re-launch its annual fair again and a Giant Vegetable Competition will be one of the highlights… so if you are a keen veggie gardener start nurturing your carrots, beetroots, pumpkins, tomatoes, onions, etc and bring your largest specimens along to the fair for judging.

WE WILL NEED YOUR HELP with the fair. Christmas is coming and you are bound to have some unwanted gifts to donate to the Tombola. Or perhaps you have some household items to give to the white elephant stall, we could also do with some plants and sweets – and what about all those books that you’ve read and are cluttering up your bookshelf? Could you bake us a cake or part with a few jars of your jams and pickles? All contributions will be very gratefully received.

Some of the Irene Village Market stalls will be at the fair together with some new stalls of our own. Perhaps you have a stall you’d like to run or could you offer to ‘mastermind’ a stall for us?

We’re also planning to organize some BOERESPORT as well as all the usual stalls. Get a team of pals together for the tug-of-war, throw a ball at the coconut shy, toss some boules - and if you don’t know what bokdrol spoeg is, come along and be enlightened!

Smuts House puts Irene on the map, it is our heritage and how lucky we are to have the museum right here in Irene where we can enjoy the monthly bird walks, the annual grass and wild flower walks, enjoy tea and scones in Ouma’s tea garden and show our visitors over Gen. Smuts’ unique home. Can we all pull together to raise much-needed funds at this Goodwill Fair?

8 Tshwane Masters Swimming Donation to Irene Homes

This year we managed to collect an amount of R4 120.00. The Coelacanth Club made a huge effort, even swimming in a freezing Hillcrest Pool on 30 August. 2014. We have a competition each year, which is called “Tshwane Masters Winter Challenge”, where each participant swims for 1 hour, or less, at a cost of R50.00 during the month of August for our chosen Charity, Irene Homes. We did receive some donations as well, which got us to the amount of R4 120.00. Prizes were given out to all who handed in their completed forms. Most swim-mers did their swims at a Virgin Active where the water was warm.

We will be doing this same event each year in the month of August.

We would like to wish all Irene Homes swimmers “good luck” for the competi-tions coming up soon. May this money come in handy for you all.

GARANKUWA HOSPITAL CHRISTMAS 2014Once again I am appealing to the people of Irene to collect toys that

are in good condition for the children at George Mukarhi Hospital. For the past 28 years I have collected toys to give to the children on Christmas

Day. This will be the only gift that the child will probably ever receive. Toys can be dropped off at 19 Bruce

If you close your eyes for just a moment you will hear jingle bells and the sound of feet rushing off to buy Christmas gifts! The year has absolutely flown by and we are already looking at the closing few months of the year. Life is so very fast paced and leaves little time for “smelling the roses” so we hope that you take the time to walk around the village and enjoy this little piece of heaven that we call home.

Hennops River

The ILA supports any initiative that preserves and protects the beauty and lifestyle that we have in Irene. The Hennops River has been under enormous threat for many years and action is being proposed by AfriForum to take corrective legal action to prompt corrective action. We would encourage our residents to become informed and involved in the fight to restore this water resource to its previous glory for all communities that enjoy it, both upstream and down. SMS “Hennops” to 45341 at a cost of R1 to support this initiative.

Safety

The recent violent unprovoked attack on a cyclist on NelmapiusDrive (as re-ported on the front page of the Centurion Rekord 19/9/14) has left many health enthusiasts horrified. The victim of this attack sustained severe injury and this prompts us to once again highlight the safety issues around cycling alone in isolated areas. This particular incident occurred alongside a busy road and the perpetrators were brazen in their actions! Please take care where and when you cycle or run and preferably do so in groups.

Holidays and overactive alarms

Please ensure that alarms are operational and that faults are repaired, as overactive alarms impact on EBS’ ability to respond to real emergencies. Members going away during the holidays should advise EBS and the ILA to ensure that there is appropriate security planning over the holiday season. Contact details of a key holder should also be provided.

Electric fence

Perimeter residents are kindly requested to monitor foliage inside their prop-erties that may interfere with the electric fence. Our contractor monitors all outside foliage but cannot access properties to prune treesand shrubs inside the fence.

Gate functions and traffic violations

Please take care to observe the rules of the road, especially to yield and stop signs, as we would like to ensure the safety of both pedestrians and drivers in the village. In addition, please be reminded that our gates allow only one ve-hicle to pass through at a time. Visitors should be informed in order to prevent infra-structural and vehicle damage.

Access gates on Albert Street

Any faults or problems with the Albert Street gates should please be reported to Jan Swanepoel.

Vandalism

On-going damage to the ILA infrastructure on a monthly basis is resulting in escalating operational costs! Krige Lane South booms are the primary targets for vandalism. We urge our residents to please respect our infrastructure and to inform visitors of the traffic flow in the village to ensure that they do not van-dalise the booms out of sheer frustration.

Illegal dumping

Should you witness any illegal dumping, specifically on the corner of Alexan-dra and Main Road, please report it to Jan Swanepoel (along with the registra-tion number) to be passed on to Metro Police.

We are fortunate that, since our closure, Irene is now virtually free of illegal advertising. Long may this last! With regard to pet notices, residents are re-quested to rather contact Alyson and make use of the ILA’s bulk email service or post a message on “The Village of Irene Face Book” page. Dear Town Crier...On a recent walk up Smuts Koppie we

found the most wonderful first spring wildflowers. I attach two photos, the first

is the flower of the Boophane disticha (red flower) and a yellow Eulophia - a rare

ground orchid.

There are so many wonderful ground orchids around the veld in Irene to delight walkers in the veld. We do regular walks

and have many lovely photos of veld flowers.

The fouling of the Hennops River“The price of apathy towards public affairs is to be rules by evil men.” – Plato

The Hennops River snakes its way across a number of municipal boundaries and flows through some of the most beautiful areas and residential estates in Irene. It has been a beautiful addition to our area for generations but the constant fouling of the water with garbage, pollution and sewerage and the lack of action being taken to guard this water resource upstream has turned this once beautiful feature into a lifeless and dangerous eyesore.

After several complaints on 702, John Robbie made contact with the City of Tshwane’s representative, Sibusiso Mabase, to respond on air. The conversation can be heard on http://702.co.za/heard-on-air/index.asp?keyword=Sibusiso+Mabase. This conversation made it very clear that the council had not made progress in the resolution of this crisis over many years and that there was no sense of urgency to tackle it any time soon with so many municipalities in the mix.

AfriForum has indicated that they plan to take this matter to court and held a meeting for interested parties at Leriba Lodge on the evening of 15 October 2014. At this meeting they shared the planned way forward in tackling the responsible council offices and people in addition to a community driven clean up that would run parallel to the litigation.

Water is a critical issue in every country and is especially critical in ours where it is both scarce and in huge demand. I am appealing to our every one of our residents as well as any and all neighbouring suburbs or communities to become informed about the state of the Hennops River and be involved in forcing a resolution to this issue that threatens our water

resources. Awareness and community involvement are two critical requirements in an endeavour like this.

Should you be willing to raise your hand and stand together in this, please SMS “Hennops” to 45341 at a cost of R1. This action will add your support to a petition on the matter, in addition to the opportunity to become involved in the AfriForum planned legal and community action to force the restoration of the river.

I will continue to approach the media and our political and municipal structures to try and get some action on the matter and hope that you will all stand with me in this endeavour.

AppAlledAs I was returning from the veld opposite Smut’s house (market venue) I stopped at the stop sign on Nellmapius Road and watched a truck laden with rubbish turn into the dirt road directly opposite me. (This is the road on the left as you come from under the bridge up the hill towards Cornwall).

I immediately became suspicious as I know there is no dump down there, I decided to follow. Well, how wrong was I. The veld behind the Irene railway station is a dump site. What a mess and right on our door step. I prevented the truck from dumping, but was mortified at what I saw, piles of house refuse, boxes which I sincerely hope do not come from the stores in front of the station, building rubble scattered everywhere and hiding in the bushes were vagrants waiting to dig through the rubbish. (I think).

What a disgusting mess, an ideal breeding site for rats and a great hiding place for hijackers and rapists. I would advise anyone from going down there alone.

I appeal to the local councilor to somehow get this road block off and if possible, to please get some front loaders in there to deal with this mess in the best possible way.
