Celebrang 25 years of Sr Irene McCormack’s martyrdom Irene McCormack (21 August 1938 – 21 May 1991) Sr Irene was a Sister and teacher after Mary’s own heart. Born in Western Australia, she joined the Sisters of St Joseph in 1957 and taught in Australia for 30 years before following God’s call to Latin America, where she ministered to the poor in the Lima region. In 1989, Sr Irene was sent to deliver emergency provisions from Caritas to the village of Huasahuasi in the Peruvian Andes. She served the Pueblo people in education and in spiritual care and when a looming threat from Shining Path guerrillas meant that Catholic leaders left town, Sr Irene refused to abandon the community. She felt that under these circumstances they needed her spiritual support more than ever. A few months later, the guerrillas entered the Huasahuasi and accused Sr Irene of distrib- uting “American goods and propaganda” – that is, for attending to the material and educational needs of the people. She, along with four local men, was executed by the guerrillas. Sr Irene was martyred for defending the poor and champi- oning education. Today, MMI continues Sr Irene’s work amongst the poor, investing in teachers and education and also empower- ing women and facilitating livelihoods opportunities for them. We run anti-violence mediation workshops in high schools so that students, families and teachers can follow Sr Irene’s example of rejecting violence and pursuing education for the betterment of the whole community. Reflection

Both the first reading and the psalm response celebrate the marvels of creation and the marvellous creator who brought them into being. Proverbs states that God created all of these things through Wisdom. While later theology will identify Wis-dom with both the Word of God, the second person of the Trin-ity, and the Holy Spirit, the third person, the reading itself does not suggest this.

Paul credits God with our justification through faith. Justifica-tion or salvation is accomplished by God through our Lord Jesus Christ. The love of God is poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Paul does not clearly state that the love of God that we receive through the Holy Spirit sanctifies us, but one could certainly understand it in this way.

John’s theology resembles very closely that of Paul. In it, Jesus reveals the intimate connection between himself and the Fa-ther as well as himself and the Spirit. The Spirit continues the mission of Jesus, neither adding anything to his teaching nor omitting anything from it.

While this is a feast that glorifies the central mystery of our faith, a mystery that is based on the way the three divine per-sons relate to each other, the readings all address ways that God relates to us. If we concentrate, as the texts for today sug-gest that we do, on all of the ways that our Triune God has blessed us, we may be more inclined to cry out with the psalm-ist: ‘O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the

earth!’ by Dianne Bergant CSS

Living the Gospel – Trinity Every time we make the sign of the cross we reaffirm our belief in a God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Although some people have diffi-culties with the gender-specific language of ‘Father’ and ‘Son’ and look for other ways to express this reality, all Christian people profess a belief in the one God who is experi-enced in three distinct ways. We are baptised ‘in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit’ and we remind ourselves of this reality when we pray and when we bless ourselves or others.
