In 2013 the Irish Minifootball Association was granted the exclusive licence to operate the official Ireland 6-a-side soccer team in European competitions by the European Commission approved body, the European Minifootball Federation.

‘Minifootball’ is the European term for all forms of 5, 6 and 7-a-side soccer.

The Irish Minifootball Association (IMA) sent an Ireland 6-a-side soccer team to compete in the 2013 6-a-side European Championships in Greece, 2014 in Montenegro and will be sending a team to compete in the 2015 6-a-side European Championships in Croatia at the end of September 2015.

The IMA has taken an executive decision to offer the complete running of the Ireland 6-a-side soccer team, with full rights to participate in European competitions, to a licensee.

In 2012 the European Commission declared that small sided soccer was classed as a separate sport to 11-a-side soccer thereby requiring a different governing body. The European Minifootball Federation (EMF) was set up by Răzvan Burleanu who is the current President of both the EMF and the Romanian FA, and Filp Juda, the current President of the Czech Minifootball Association and the World Minifootball Association.

The EMF invited organisations from Ireland, including the FAI to bid for the license to be the exclusive operators of the Ireland 6-a-side soccer team in European competitions. The IMA bid for the licence and won exclusivity until 2018 to operate the official Ireland 6-a-side soccer team.

The IMA is currently in discussions with the Irish Government to be formally recognised in Ireland as it is in Europe, as the official governing body for small sided soccer in Ireland.
