iQra International

iQra International was founded by a group of dedicated young people withan aim of making a difference and helping the poorest and most vulnerable peopleincluding orphans, disabled and disadvantaged men, women and children all over the world.

Since the establishment of the charity in 1996, iQra International has been providing support to destitute and needy rebuilding their lives and becoming self-reliant. This was done primarily through structured and intuitive training courses for women such as sewing classes, distributing wheelchairs, tube wells, undertaking cataract operations, and providing interest-free loans and building low-cost houses. While iQra’s primary focus has been on Bangladesh – a densely populated country where almost half of the population live on less than one dollar a day – we have also undertaken projects in countries such as Albania, Indonesia, Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Zimbabwe.

With an aim to fulfil the huge demand for treatment and rehabilitation facilities for disabled children in Bangladesh, iQra took the initiative to build a purpose-built hospital for disabled children in 2013. With the generous support from the British people specifically the British-Bangladeshis, iQra Disabled Children Hospital’s second floor had been completed in 2015. Having completed its second phase of construction work, this fully-fledged hospital now serving the disabled people 24-hour-a-day 7 days a week. Our hope is to complete this 5-storey hospital by 2017 as part of our third phase fundraising drive.

Being vaccinated at the right time could have prevented Jashim from a terrible disease like Polio.

A 20 year old rickshaw puller (Jashim) from Dhaka, Bangladesh, earns his living by riding a Rickshaw. He lost his left leg because of polio disease, but that did not stop him from trying to live an honest and hardworking life.

Despite new legislation and an improved understanding of disabled people, they continue to be seen as ‘incapable’.

£250Disability Support - will provide assessment, a diagnostic test, equipment etc. to a disabledperson and help in the running cost of the hospital

Cultural taboos and superstition often lead to disabled people being shunned by their families in Bangladesh, and they are looked upon as a ‘burden’ and ‘liability’. iQra International works to enable disabled people living in poverty to come together and campaign for their right to independence, equality and opportunity.

According to Hadiths, Allah (SWT) will show mercy on the Day of Judgement to those who showed kindness on Earth to His creation and provided assistance to the weak during their lifetime. Will you help us in breaking the barriers which prevent them from participating in mainstream society? Will you join hands with us to ensure that their dignity, fundamental rights and well-being is restored?

Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with a significant number of people living below the poverty line. 40% of the population live on less than £1.00 per day.

At least 245million women around the world have been widowed and more than 115million of them live in devastating poverty including 4.7 million from Bangladesh. Widows face injustice and cultural discrimination, as well as making them extremely vulnerable. Many are still young and struggling to cope from day to day with enormous challenges. Will you help us to aid widows in rebuilding their self-esteem? Will you join with us to make tangible difference to the lives of widows and their children? Will you help us develop long-term solutions that restore their dignity and self-respect? It is said that “One who cares for widows and the poor is like those who fight in the way of Allah or those who spend their days fasting and their nights praying” (Al-Bukhari).

iQra International is providing business start-up training and grantsto widows in the most remote places. However there are so many – who our funds can’t reach. We believe empowering widows can eliminate the stigma that is associated with them, and provide tangible opportunities to strengthen their lives.

Will you help us make a difference in providing a widows with the sustainability she needs to rebuild her and her children’s lives? Will you help us enable widows to live a caring and loving environment without hunger and disease? Will you join hands with us to rebuild their shattered lives with a safe home, food, clothing, medicine and education?

Alarmingly, one child is orphaned every 22 seconds in the world. Children are some of the most vulnerable people around the world, and it is our responsibility to ensure that they are safe and protected. Orphans are the hardest hit when faced with challenges that even adults would find it difficult to cope with.

The suffering of children is one of the most difficult things to witness. iQra International’s Sponsor an Orphan Hafiz campaign strives to improve the livelihood of orphan children who have lost the most important strength in their lives – their parents. For many orphans, the threat of poverty is constant. Where will their next meal come from? Where will they live? Who will provide them with medication when they become ill? Will you join us to give the gift of childhood to an orphan and the chance for a better future? Looking after an orphan is a great act of generosity encouraged by our Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) who said: “I and the person who looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be in Paradise like this,” putting his index and middle fingers together. [Bukhari]

You can gain rewards by supporting a child who has been orphaned, and helping them through the formidable struggles they encounter. You can also gain rewards by helping someone become a hafiz of the Holy Qur’an.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) emphasised the importance of providing education, stating: “The best amongst you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027).

Over 23million people in Bangladesh lack access to safe water. 43% don’t have access to proper toilets – over 66 million people. As a result, more than 7,000 children under the age of 5 die every year from contaminated water, poor sanitation and improper hygiene.

Will you help us improve the quality of life for families by providing them with clean water? Can you join hands with us to reduce the daily burden of water collection that falls on women and children? Will you join hands with us to help eliminate the incidence of water related diseases? Providing clean water to families will also help local farmers increase their crop production and nutrition levels will improve.
