he Iqra Newsletter Issue II: The

Humanity still exists! It nice to see people still care aboutothers who are suffering. And sometimes we get caught up inour own little bubble that we forget about our neighbors andothers who are in desperate need of help, food and othernecessities of life. Its really awesome to see people have theheart and fitrah (natural predisposition) to do good in this

    world! Alhamdulillah. - Rajeev Sachdeva

Why has Allah (swt) givenus more than we need? So wecan give! Give with yourhealth, give with your time, and give with your money.

Allah (swt) created you tosucceed. He didnt create youto be mediocre because thenthat would be a mistake on

Allahs (swt) part.Excellence is already in you

because youre Muslim, but you must want it! You muststrive for it! You must strivefor excellence. So give andhelp others with the

    blessings that Allah(swt) bestowedupon you!

    - Asil Najjar

This years Fast-A-Thon allowed me toput my life inperspective. We goaroundcomplaining aboutschool and how we

just want to donothing all day, but

we forget abouthow blessed we areto have this

opportunity, let alone basicsustenance. Learning aboutMali, I realized that I shoulddo whatever I can with myrelatively amazing life to

bring people who aresuffering all around the

world a little close to aproductive and enjoyablelife. -Hussein Alkhatib

Im so grateful t have had the opportunity to participate inthis years Fast-A-Thon. Although there were countless

powerful messages to be take away from this incredible event,a message that impacted me the most was a question posed byHanif Williams: Have you wondered why Allah (swt) hasblessed us with more thanwe need? Being a 20 yearold living in a big city, Imconstantly consumed bythe materialistic nature ofthe society in which Idwell, and although itwould be near impossible

for me to completelydetach myself from myvery comfortablestandard of living, I feelits important that I beconscious of the amount ofexcess means I have anwhat purpose it serves. Its my duty not only as aMuslim but as a humanbeing to use this excess to

help those in need aroundme, from members of our own Columbus community all theway to our brothers and sisters suffering in Mali who do notknow where their next meals will be coming from. In thewords of Neil DeGrasse Tyson, For me, I am driven by twomain philosophies: know more about the world than I knewyesterday and lessen the suffering of other. Youd besurprised how far that gets you. I applaud MSA, SSA,UNICEF and Hanif Williams for all their efforts in providingme with such an incredible experience.

    -Samiah Shakir

All the work put into Fast-A-Thondefinitely pays off in the end,

alhamdullilah. Its a strongreminder that our sisters and

bothers are suffering everywhereand they deserve our attention,

regardless of location. Thanks toeveryone who came out and

    donated!Shamiyan HawramaniFemale Outreach Chair

    Awkward Things Muslims Do

Accidentally saying Muslim lingo to a non-Muslim When Muslims are together, we tend to throw around lingo that can seem intimidating. InsiderMuslim lingo like inshAllah (if Allah wills) and Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah). When non-Muslimscome to this site, they read all sorts of Muslim-ish stuff and most of them just leave confused whichamuses me as I enjoy confusing people.

However when it happens in real life, it actually seems less pleasurable and more awkward.Observe:

On the flip side, if they dont call thepolice then theyll start researching allthe funky Muslim lingo and embraceIslam that way. Thats some slickdawah.

Weird excuses when refusing to shake handswith the opposite gender

Some of us wanna be all slick and not shake the hands of the opposite gender. Thats fine.Whats not slick is giving off terrible excuses that would make anyone extremely confused.

Some sample excuses below:Ew. No. Cooties.

Im worried I might crush your extremely beautiful yet incredibly puny hands. This hand is filled with a contagious disease that could give you diarrhea and/or rabies for

a week its really up to you if you want to shake it.Wear boxing gloves. Slice off your hands. Sneeze into your hand before every meeting

do SOMETHING. Just do us all a favor and dont make up dumb excuses if you arent ashaker.

he Iqra Newsletter Issue II: The

With every philanthropic eventbenefitting a certain cause in ourcommunity, there comes a vocal anddetermined opposition. These voices chidethe organization for choosing that specificcause. They claim that some other cause ismore pressing, more relevant, more

deserving. They know of someone whosesuffering was worse, and who, therefore, deserved more of our attention andcompassion. To this, my response is simple:pain is not comparable and compassion isnot limited.

As Muslims, we have a duty to usethe blessings bestowed upon us to betterthe circumstances of all of Godscreation. To the merit of our community,we often use our faith as motivation tofuel our benevolent actions toward others. However, the intention behind thesebeautiful acts can sometimes be cloudedby ethnocentric ideologies. ImmigrantMuslim communities often rally arounddedicating money or support to those

suffering in their own home nations. Often, these immigrant groups represent nationsthat are indeed in dire circumstances. Inthis way, there is significant benefit andgoodwill done through these actions. Yet,the ever-present ethnocentrism leaves abitter aftertaste on these otherwise

altruistic actions. This attitude, in effect, leads to a neglect of our otherscommunities.

Indeed, there are heinous crimesagainst humanity and unimaginablesuffering occurring throughout theworld. As Muslims and global citizens,

this suffering deserves our utmostconcern and action. Often, this pain feelsstrongest when it is our own nation. However, we must not allow nationalismto obscure our humanity. To diminish orignore the plight of all of our brothersand sisters is to neglect our duty asMuslims.

We are distinguished as humansthrough our ability to foster empathyand compassion for one another. Whilewe fundraise and donate to Syria,Palestine, Pakistan, India, and Somalia, wemust not forget to care for and love allof our fellow humans, whether theyshare our heritage or not. We can caredeeply about a singular cause, but this

must never eclipse our empathy for all.The beauty in our humanity is that it isnot scarce. We can care deeply andenthusiastically about many peoples simultaneously. We are not limited. Weare not rationed. We are human.
