EDUCATION FIRSTSemester 2 is an opportunity for students to reassert their commitment to their learning. This involves:

• a commitment to complete all tasks by the submission dates • being organised and not leaving tasks until the last minute • working with their peers and teachers contributing to a learning environment where all students can

learn and thrive. This includes respecting the rights of teachers to teach and learners to learn.

All teachers in IQRA College want our valued students to be successful growing as individuals and making progress in their learning. As the College focus on literacy, numeracy and students’ wellbeing, this will see our committed staff developing explicit goals in literacy, numeracy and personal/social skills.

SCHOOL POLICIES UPDATEPolicies help a school establish rules and procedures to function effectively and ensure everyone is connected. Read up the following school policies to understand more about:

• Senior School Assessment Policy (Year 11-12)• Middle School Assessment Policy (Year 7 – 10)• Junior and Primary School Homework Policy• Uniform and Haircut Policy• Mobile Policy

LET’S READ PARENT WORKSHOP! (MS SARAH WALLER – JUNIOR SCHOOL) We are excited to announce that IQRA College will be holding a “Let’s Read Workshop” for Junior Primary (Reception to Year 2) Parents in week 7. The workshop provides Junior Primary parents and carers with bilingual reading books and support to encourage them to have fun reading with their young children. The program also encourages children to develop a love of books and the ability to name letters and play with the sounds of words.

Children learn more when something is shown to them as well as explained, so the workshop gives parents and carers clear and simple information by providing a “Share and Show” technique. The workshop is run by the Smith Family, a national, independent children’s charity helping disadvantaged Australians to get the most out of their education. Look out for the registration form coming to you soon!

NUMERACY FOCUS UPDATE (MR ZAMRI) InshaAllah for this term, the Junior and Primary school will be having a Math Carnival in Week 5 where we make learning come alive with hands on learning experiences. During the carnival, students will be given the opportunity to showcase their numeracy knowledge using different platforms. They will also share their knowledge during the class scheduled visits to students of other class groups. The purpose of the carnival is for students to participate in numeracy activities and increase their knowledge and skills in the subject while having fun at the same time.

InshaAllah we are also piloting a new initiative where we use data collection as a primary tool for analysing areas of concern in the subject. With this data driven initiative, we hope to make good progress in the development and

understanding of the subject among our students. The initiative will start with the Year 3s to Year 6s and hopefully rolled out to the rest of the school in the near future.

LITERACY FOCUS UPDATE (MRS BALGISH)In the light of IQRA College’s aim to offer students comprehensive programs at the highest standard, the English Department has the following initiatives to kick start term 3:

1. A data analysis will be used to identify areas of concern after students have done their assessments. Following up the analysis, teachers will find ways to address the areas of concern in the subject. Through collaborative work with other staff, finding the right resources and using different strategies and/or new approaches, our teachers aim to help improve students’ literacy achievement.

2. A wide range of reading resources have been carefully selected for students to develop their language, literacy and literature skills. The availability of these resources will enhance engaging teaching activities.

3. IQRA College is actively taking part in the annual Premier’s Reading Challenge. Students are strongly encouraged to read every day. Parents are strongly encouraged to register their children as members.

SACE UPDATE (MR ANDREW REAVLEY)I hope all the students had a restful break and were working hard on their study. Here are some notes for your diary in regard to the year 12 SACE:

EXAM dates: Stage 2• Maths methods: Monday 2nd November• General Maths: Wednesday 4th November• Biology: Friday 6th November (online)• Arabic: TBA• Chemistry Tuesday 10th November• More information can be found here at https://www.sace.sa.edu.au/studying/assessment/exams/

timetable

Subject coursework is due before the exams, so this is the last term of full focus for our year 12 students, so help them out as much as you can in their efforts. During the week 10 of this term, we will be doing practice exams with the students as part of assessment week to help them.

SATAC Study guides and preferencesSATAC guides have been given to students and university course guides are available for students in Mr Reavley’s room. The opening date for registration with SATAC is the 4th of August until the September 25th for the first round. Students can alter these at a later date and we will guide the students into how this process works and follow up on their process.

Study Spaces:For our year 11 and 12 students, we have tried to allocate more time to help them study for their topics, as our students are doing a variety of lessons and courses, including Stage 1 topics, Stage 2 topics, their research project and their VET Courses.

Newly established workspaces and rooms have been set up for the boys and girls. It is expected that the students use these rooms for study and revision, as they are not “free” lessons, but “study lessons.” Students need to follow up on work and seek clarified feedback from staff to help them achieve what they can.

AttendanceAttendance for school is very important in the final two years of it. Students are expected a record of at least 98% attendance at school. Universities and institutions for further study will take into account attendance when choosing students for their courses. Illnesses and leave must be communicated with the admin staff to make sure we can keep track of your progress.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (MR SAAD KALANIYA)In addition to my role as the High School Education Support Officer at IQRA College, I have been appointed as the High School Student Representative Council (SRC) leader. I will be working in collaboration with Ms Sarah Pettett who is the SRC leader managing the Primary School SRC.

The SRC is a wonderful opportunity for our students of all year levels, who wish to do more for their school and have demonstrated exceptional academic performance and interpersonal skills. The SRC members are the ambassadors of IQRA College and will represent their school in any interactions with other schools as well as be the student voice for their individual year levels.

Members will work closely with me and Ms Sarah P. to organise and run community events at school, build confidence, undertake leadership roles and be a role model for their fellow peers. The SRC members must demonstrate exceptional behaviour at school with utmost respect to their teachers and classmates.

We have a lot planned for them in the way of personal and professional growth. I look forward to seeing how we can help fulfil our role as the SRC to the school. The SRC members have each been awarded a badge; so, if you spot one of our members, do congratulate them!

5-A-SIDE KNOCKOUT SOCCER (MR AARON CAESARIKOW & MR DAWOOD PERROTTA)5-A-Side Knockout Soccer is a modified version of the sport, designed to promote active participation and enjoyment. These competitions form the first round of the School Sport SA Knockout competition, with top-ranked teams progressing to the State Knockout Finals.

We are pleased that some of our students from the Year 8 and 9 classes will be representing IQRA College at the inter-school 5-A-Side Soccer Carnival at Reynella East College in Week 4 this term. The team will be competing against other schools in the Southern Zone. We make duaa they will excel and play fair.

CHARITY FUNDRAISER As part of the Stage 2 Religious Studies assignment, students were asked to design a fundraiser for a religion-based charity campaign. Students from the year 10, 11 and 12 are putting their efforts together to have the food sale fundraiser on the 12th August 2020. All proceeds will go into building a well with the help of Human Appeal International (Adelaide). It was pleasing to announce that the students involved have acquired the food safety training by Marion City Council.

Please allow your child to bring some money on the 12th August so they can contribute to the fundraiser through their purchases. There will be a variety of food like mini pizza, waffles, fairy floss, chicken nuggets and fries.
