Greek Research Network Differences between IPv4 and IPv6 IPv6 in GRNET GRNET member of 6net GRNET2 IPv6 in AIX IPv6 in SEEREN 6PE over CsC QoS and IPv6

research institutes Backbone for schools
IPv4 / IPv6 differences
Bigger but less complex headers
No new routing protocols Adapted to carry bigger
addresses Security is implied even in
routing protocols with IPSEC

IPv6 in GRNET
First deployment of an overlay topology with tunnels and connectivity with 6bone.
Single node in GRnet Gain experience with the new protocols and
operational practice with management tools. Initial service deployment with DNS Preparation of RFP for IPv6 capable routers Receive normal IPv6 prefixes form RIPE Prepare an addressing plan for a /32 network ( ~
4 billion addresses
GRNET member of 6net
6net: a FP5 project for a pan-European IPv6 network
Gain experience and knowledge through interaction with other NRENs and Cisco.
Adopt new techniques and practices for routing and operations ( i.e. embedded-RP in multicastv6, security etc)
GRnet active in QoS, applications, management and Security WP
GRnet prepares a pilot of transitioning a big operational network: the Greek school network
GRNET2
The new network is built with IPv6 support in mind.
Campus networks start connecting with IPv6 and transiting services in IPv6 also.
GRNET uses IS-IS and BGP-MP as routing protocols
IPv6 in AIX
Aix is the Athens Internet Exchange It is implemented by a L2 switch Separate port of IPv6 aware traffic INCENTIVE :No membership fees for IPv6 port Experimental peering with a commercial ISP
SEEREN and IPv6
Originally not planned to provide IPv6 Implemented with an MPLS based technology:
Carrier Supporting Carrier (CSC) CSC is an MPLS IPv4 based tunnel technology Is it possible to provide IPv6 to the end users
without traditional tunnels when the Carrier does not support IPv6 ?
YES !!! With a lot of innovation and troubleshooting of Cisco and our colleagues in AMREJ
6PE over CSC - Not a simple solution
6PE over CsC
Integration of two techniques:
– 6PE functionality is installed on the CEs instead of the PEs!
– 6PE peers belong to different administrative domains.
– Three Label Stack !!!– Feasible, because CE-
PE connection uses MPLS.

IPv6 and QoS
Test QoS implementation in Cisco hardware platforms
Provide feedback to Cisco for problems in QoS handling when IPv6 is in use.
Finally fixed in the latest IOS.
